Tony Pulis column: 'There can only be one singer' - my secrets of successful man-management

Managing teams is about making decisions that can be seen as unpopular by some, but are ultimately in the best interests of the club. It's a delicate balance between pleasing everyone and doing what's right for the team.

Dealing with an unhappy player without it affecting your team is crucial. Personal views about each other cannot come into the equation - for manager or player. The club needs every one of its coaching staff and players to be united with one aim: winning football matches.

To build that special bond you want to have at all clubs, you need strong characters everywhere. The spine of a good team has character that's genuinely open to discussions with the manager. I placed a lot of responsibility in my captain to relay to me any issues the dressing room had, both as a group and individually.

I've always believed that your team's strategy or playing style is determined by the quality of your players. Once you have an identity that suits your players, finding ways of getting the best out of them week in and week out is vital.

Players can be very insecure or over-confident. They might be rock-solid characters or a loose cannon. Taking the time to find out what makes them tick is priceless, and that determines either success or failure. Part of addressing their issues away from football has helped me make players more enjoyment- driven in their playing days.

The top six clubs in the Premier League are undoubtedly strong, but are they stronger now than before? This is a question that I'd like to know your thoughts on. Do you believe these clubs are better equipped to win matches and achieve success now compared to 10 or 20 years ago?

OMG u think the top 6 r still unbeatable lol some of them have changed so much in terms of playing style & squad depth but at the same time I feel like they've got the best coaches & staff in place now 🤩 their ability to adapt & evolve is key to success! 💪

I think the top six clubs in the Premier League have lost a bit of their magic since the golden era of 2004-08. They've become more predictable and less reliant on individual brilliance, which made them so exciting back then. Now they're just trying to grind out results with their deep squads and massive resources. Don't get me wrong, it's great for them having all that money to throw at problems, but I think it's made the game a bit duller overall 🤔

I think some of these top six clubs have become way too big for their own boots 🤯. They've got the finances and resources to attract anyone they want, but sometimes that comes at a cost. I mean, you see players getting sacked left and right because they don't fit in with the team's style anymore 💼. And the pressure on them is just mental 🤯. Can they really handle the expectation of winning every week? I think some of them are getting more concerned with their social media presence than actual football skills 😂. Don't get me wrong, it's great to see players enjoying themselves and all that, but when you're playing at the highest level, you need to be able to focus on the game 🏟️.

🤔 "The best way to get the job done is to do it yourself." But, in this case, having a strong team with diverse characters is key, not just individual players. I think the top six clubs have gotten better at creating that balance between winning and pleasing fans 🏆

"Change is hard at first, merciless for a long time, and kind never." 💪💡 ~ Charles Dickens

I think the top six clubs in the Premier League have become more unpredictable over the years. The quality of players and tactics has increased, but so has the number of injuries and suspensions that can impact team performance. It's harder to win consistently now than it was 10 or 20 years ago... 🤔

I mean can u imagine having a class where everyone's just stressed out all the time, except for ur captain who's chillin' coolly? Like that's what u want in a team, right? Strong characters everywhere, not just one person who's tryna be the hero. And what about when players are insecure or over-confident, like, how do u handle that? I feel like if u get to know them, understand what makes them tick, then u can help them work on their weaknesses and stuff. The top six clubs in the Premier League, like, are they still the best? Idk... maybe some of them have gotten worse, I mean we can't even get a decent wifi signal at our school's gym, let alone figure out what makes a team successful

I'm not sure I buy all this "building character" nonsense 🤔. It sounds like a fancy way of saying we need players who can put in the work and take constructive criticism without losing their minds 💪. And honestly, it's not that hard to figure out what makes each player tick - you just pay attention and have tough conversations 💬.

As for the top six clubs being stronger now than before... I'm not convinced 🤷‍♂️. Sure, they've got more money and better players, but that doesn't necessarily translate to success on the pitch ⚽️. In fact, with all the pressure and expectation comes a lot of complacency - teams start to rest on their laurels and lose sight of what made them successful in the first place 😴.

I think what's really needed is a healthy dose of humility and a willingness to adapt 🔄. All this fuss about building character just seems like a euphemism for "we're too good for our own good" 😂.

I think its all about evolution 🌱, ya know? These top six clubs have had time to develop their young talent, work on their team dynamics, and adapt to the changing game. I mean, imagine being able to nurture players from youth to seasoned pros - that's gotta give them an edge! Plus, with all the analytics and data available nowadays, they're better equipped to make informed decisions about player signings, tactics, and everything in between 📊. And let's not forget about the financial muscle they have - it's like having a superpower 💸! Of course, success is never guaranteed, but I think these clubs are definitely in a stronger position now than they were 10 or 20 years ago 🤔.
