Roblox, James Bond and a billion-dollar video game – here are our most-read gaming stories of 2025

A look back at the gaming stories that captivated our readers in 2025 reveals a conflicted year where both great games and great works stood out alongside growing concerns over their impact on society.

The Guardian devoted considerable space to covering Roblox, with Sarah Martin shining a light on the dangers of its unregulated environment for children. The platform boasts more than 150 million daily users – predominantly youngsters who are vulnerable to exploitation. While some parents may be willing to restrict access, it is essential to ensure that those who play should do so under supervision.

Another topic generating interest among gamers was the self-proclaimed gaming prowess of Elon Musk. A recent exposé showed he had been faking his skills online, sparking amusement and a sense of vindication for writers like Keith Stuart, who penned an article on this phenomenon earlier in the year. It turned out to be just one of many incidents that showcased the richest man's tendency to self-promote without backing it up with genuine achievements.

Video games continue to wield considerable power over both economic and cultural landscapes. The Trump administration has employed meme-based recruitment tactics for ICE, which raises questions about their integration in wider social contexts and where gaming culture sits today.

In a year marked by many firsts, the release of 007 First Light offered something for fans eager to catch a glimpse into the world that would eventually give rise to Grand Theft Auto VI. The game's developers shared insights into the process of winning over Eon Productions, and we interviewed people from IO Interactive who persuaded them to take the plunge.

This year also saw the emergence of an appreciation among seniors for video games. Some have even grown to enjoy them as a new hobby that helps alleviate boredom. Adrienne Matei discussed this phenomenon in depth with Twitch streamers aged 60, sparking hope for future collaborations between different age groups.

Lastly, the push to understand why some gamers prefer playing their controllers upside down has given rise to actual scientific research. A recent study revealed surprising reasons behind the phenomenon, one that could help unlock a deeper understanding of online cultures and gaming experiences.

Looking ahead, we invite readers to reply with the most anticipated titles they're hoping for in 2026 – your picks could be featured in our January newsletter.

man i still remember when my kid started playing roblox 🤯 it was crazy how fast she got hooked on that game like a few weeks in and she was already making friends online and stuff but then her teacher asked us about how she spent her free time and we were like "um well she plays games" and the teacher was all "okay cool" lol anyway that made me think about how important it is to keep an eye on what our kids are doing online esp since it's so accessible to, like 150 million people 🤯 and i feel bad for sarah martin who had to write about this stuff, it's not fun being the voice of caution all the time 😔

on a lighter note did u guys see that elon musk thing? i mean what a dude right but also what is wrong with him 🙄 i mean if you're gonna fake skills online at least have the decency to back it up with some actual achievements or something lol anyway glad we got a good laugh out of it

anyway gaming and culture are such big deals these days and i'm curious where it's all headed 🤔 do u guys think games like 007 first light will keep bringing us closer together or just making us more divided?

so it's interesting that Roblox is getting all this attention about its safety features 🤔 I mean, I've seen some of the stuff kids are making on there and while it can be pretty wild, I'm not sure if the platform is actually doing enough to prevent exploitation. have they released any concrete statistics or studies showing how many kids are being affected? also, what's up with Elon Musk and his gaming skills? seems like a whole lot of hype 🤑

OMG u can't believe what's going on with Elon Musk lol he thinks he can just fake his gaming skills and everyone eats it up meanwhile his other projects are like totally failing rn i mean i'm not surprised though he's always been a bit of a self-proclaimed genius
anyway back to the gaming scene and how it affects society idk about this whole Roblox thing tho some parents think its cool for their kids but what about all those predators lurking in the shadows?
and can we talk about 007 First Light tho i'm super hyped for GTA VI but what's with the "gaming culture" vibe rn is it just me or does gaming get a bad rep sometimes

💕 I feel you, it's wild how one platform like Roblox can have such a huge impact on kids... but also has these huge blind spots that put them at risk 🤯🚨 Like what's up with the fact that some parents aren't even aware of what their kids are doing online? It's super concerning. And omg, Elon Musk is just... he's got to stop pretending to be a gaming legend lol 😂 I mean, I get it, confidence is key, but come on man 🙄

I gotta say, it's wild how fast gamers can turn on each other when it comes to Elon Musk 🤣. Like, dude gets roasted online and suddenly he's got a bunch of people thinking they're just as "genuine" 😂. But honestly, who needs all that drama in their gaming life? Can we just focus on the good stuff, like 007 First Light or whatever game is gonna revolutionize the industry next 🚀?

idk about elon musk fake streaming lol 🤣 but seriously it's wild how much influence games have on society right now. i mean its not just kids who are getting exploited, there's this whole adult gaming scene that's kinda crazy too. some gamers are like "i don't care if i'm 40 or 60, imma still play fortnite" 🤪 and then theres the other side where people are all about that retro gaming life. anyway back to roblox, it's like its a breeding ground for scammers or something. u gotta be careful when ur kids are online, even if its just a game.

anyway what i wanna know is how much more are we gonna see in 2026? any games that r gonna change the game (pun intended)? 🤔

🤔 you know what's crazy? how fast gaming has evolved 🚀 but it's still a wild west out there 🌆 like roblox, anyone can just make their own games and sell 'em to kids without knowing the risks 🤑 and now it's only getting worse with elon musk trying to pretend he's some kinda gaming god 😂 meanwhile, i'm over here just happy to have found solace in video games at 60 👴🎮

I'm still reeling from the whole Elon Musk thing 🤣 I mean, who fakes their gaming skills online? It's wild how his ego just won't quit. And can we talk about Roblox for a sec? My niece is obsessed with it and I'm low-key grateful Sarah Martin wrote that exposé – now I know to keep a closer eye on her gaming sessions 👀

I gotta say, it's wild how much drama there was around Roblox this year 🤯. Like, who knew it had that many vulnerable users? It's no wonder parents are getting worried about the whole thing. But at the same time, I'm all for gamers being able to express themselves and have fun online without adult supervision – moderation is key, you know? 🙏

And oh man, Elon Musk faking his gaming skills was a major LOL moment 💥! Can't blame writers like Keith Stuart for calling him out on it. But seriously, it's gotta be hard being in the public eye and living up to all those hype trains. Anyway, I'm hyped for 2026 – can't wait to see what other games come out! 🎮

OMG u guys this year was def wild i mean on one hand u had amazing games like Roblox & 007 First Light that actually delivered 🤯, but on the other side of the spectrum u had Elon Musk getting roasted for being fake online 💔...like what even is that?! 😂 and can we talk about how gaming has become a major part of culture now? Like some ppl are even using meme-based recruitment tactics for ICE which is wild 🤯👀

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how some gamers can play their controllers upside down 😂! Like, what's going on there? 🤯 As for the gaming industry as a whole, I think it's awesome that games are becoming more than just entertainment - they're bringing people together across different age groups. The article about seniors getting into gaming is so cool! 👴🏻🎮 And can we talk about Elon Musk being called out for his fake gaming skills? 🤦‍♂️ That guy's got some 'splainin' to do! 💁‍♂️ Anyway, I'm hyped for 2026 and all the new games that are gonna come out. What are you most looking forward to playing next year? 🎮

I mean I've been noticing how some articles on this forum are just super clickbait-y... like totally irrelevant to what's actually going on outside these walls 🤯. And don't even get me started on the comments section - it's always a wild ride of insults and spam. Can we please, for the love of all things good, have a more civil discussion thread without all the drama? 😩

🤔 I'm kinda shocked by how much impact games have on society 📊. Like, Elon Musk trying to fake his gaming skills and all 🙄. On a more positive note, it's awesome that we're seeing more appreciation from seniors for video games 🎮. Maybe they'll even inspire the next gen of gamers 💡! It's also cool how scientists are studying why people like playing controllers upside down 🤷‍♂️. Who knew there was actually science behind gaming quirkiness 😂? Can't wait to see what 2026 brings – and maybe we'll get some more games that really make a difference 🤞

I'm like totally stoked that there's finally some awareness about Roblox and its impact on kids 🤯. I mean, it's crazy to think about how many of these youngins are playing games online without their parents even knowing! It's a major concern, but at least we're talking about it now.

And oh man, Elon Musk faking his gaming skills? That's just rich 😂. Like, who tries to fake being good at something they clearly aren't? Anyway, it's cool that writers like Keith Stuart are calling him out on it.

But you know what's even more interesting? The way video games are changing the game for social recruitment and stuff 🤔. I mean, can you imagine if memes started showing up in your DMs instead of Twitter? 😂

It's also awesome to see seniors getting into gaming and finding new hobbies 🎮. I've got an aunt who's like 70 and she's always talking about this one game she's playing on Twitch... it's cool to see people from all walks of life coming together over shared interests.

And lastly, controllers upside down? 🤣 Who knew that was a thing?! But seriously, if scientists are studying this stuff, maybe we'll learn more about why people do what they do online and how we can create better gaming experiences for everyone.

I think it's wild how gaming has become this massive part of society right now 🤯... like, Roblox is out of control, but at the same time, I feel bad for all these kids who are gonna get taken advantage of just 'cause they're into it... and Elon Musk, what a joke 🤣... some people love him, others not so much... anywayz, gaming's like, this crazy cultural thing that's always evolving... did you catch the whole Eon Productions thing with 007 First Light? I thought that was super interesting...

and omg, have you seen those meme recruitment tactics they used for ICE? 🤦‍♂️... it's just so weird how gaming culture is seeping into everything else... but like, in a good way, right? We're seeing these older folks getting into gaming and it's pretty cool 😊... I mean, who knew 60-year-olds could be pro gamer lolz...

and can we talk about the upside-down controller thing for a sec? 🤔... I've seen some of my friends do this and I'm like, what even is that? But apparently, there's science behind it now... not sure if I'll start doing it or not tho 😂...

I'm like totally stoked about how much gaming has evolved this year 🤩! But at the same time, I do think it's a bit concerning that some platforms like Roblox are basically unregulated, and you gotta keep a close eye on your kid when they're playing online. It's not just about restricting access, though – we should be making sure these platforms have safeguards in place to protect users from harm 💡.

And can I just say that the whole Elon Musk gaming debacle was kinda hilarious 😂? Like, who tries to fake their gaming skills and gets called out on it? But seriously, it's a reminder that even celebrities can be, like, totally clueless sometimes 🤦‍♂️.

I'm also really excited about how video games are bringing people of all ages together! I mean, seniors are now getting into gaming as a hobby and finding it super fulfilling – who knew? 🎮 It's all about expanding our horizons and having fun, right? 😊
