NYC Council set to consider Mamdani mental health response plan

I'm all for trying new things in our community emergency response system 🤝. But I gotta wonder how we're gonna make sure these community safety workers are properly trained and supported? I mean, they'll be dealing with some pretty intense situations on a daily basis - anxiety attacks, suicidal thoughts, and whatnot 😕. We need to make sure they've got the right tools and resources to keep them safe, or it's all just gonna fall apart 🚨.

And have we thought this through enough? I know we want to reduce NYPD overtime costs, but are we prepared for the potential backlash if things don't go as planned? I'm not saying it can't work out, but we gotta be realistic here 🤔. I'd love to see some more discussion around the potential risks and benefits before this bill even gets voted on 💬.

I do like the idea of community-led initiatives taking a more proactive role in preventing violence, though 💖. If we can make that happen without putting anyone at risk, then I'm all for it 👍.

I'm all for giving mental health a priority! 💖 It's crazy how much pressure our police officers are under. I mean, can you imagine them dealing with a mental health emergency while also trying to keep everyone else safe? 🤯 They need support, not more workload. This new department sounds like it could be the answer to reducing NYPD overtime costs and having community groups play a bigger role in preventing violence 💪🌎

idk why ppl are so against this plan 🤷‍♂️. i mean, we all know that NYPD officers can get pretty aggressive when it comes to dealing with mental health emergencies... but at least they're getting some backup from trained clinicians? 🤝 and think about it - having a dedicated department for community safety could lead to some serious positive change in the city... less police presence on the streets, more resources for actual mental health support. i'm all for community groups taking a more proactive role in preventing violence too 💪

🤔 I think its gonna be really interesting to see how this whole plan plays out 🎯. Like, i'm all for reducing police overtime spending and shifting focus to community-led initiatives... but at the same time, i can understand why critics are worried about unarmed workers being at risk 💔. Its def a step in the right direction, tho 👍.

I'm not sure about this one 🤔... I mean, part of me thinks it's a great idea to take some pressure off NYPD officers and let clinicians handle mental health emergencies, but at the same time, I worry that it could be a recipe for disaster 🚨. Like, what if the clinician doesn't know how to handle the situation? Or what if they get in over their head and can't get anyone else to help? And then you've got unarmed workers putting themselves at risk... it's like playing with fire 🔥. But at the same time, I think we need to start thinking about community safety in a different way. We need to empower community groups to take on more proactive roles in preventing violence and promoting security. It's all about finding that balance, you know? 🤝

🚨💡 This proposed shift from NYPD to community safety responders in mental health emergencies is a game-changer for NYC 🌆 I think it's about time we prioritize people over police when it comes to emotional crises. It might seem counterintuitive, but trained clinicians can de-escalate situations and provide support without escalating things further. I'm all for freeing up NYPD officers to focus on more serious crimes. Let's give this new system a chance! 👍
