A 95-year-old grandmother was left shaken after an elderly man broke into her home in Little Hulton, Salford, on Tuesday. The suspect, who is believed to have offered to clean her windows earlier that day, arrived at her doorstep with a sinister motive.
When the 95-year-old woman answered the door, the attacker immediately overpowered her, tying her hands together and demanding cash and her purse. However, his plan was foiled when another woman, who knew the victim, happened upon the scene and confronted the thief.
The would-be robber fled in fear after being confronted by the brave passerby, allowing the police to arrive on the scene and apprehend the suspect. An 80-year-old man is currently in custody for questioning, with officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) working to piece together the events surrounding the incident.
While no one was physically injured during the attempted robbery, the elderly woman is understandably shaken by the experience. Officers are providing support to the victim and her family, who are described as "brave" for stepping in and foiling what could have been a much more serious crime.
The motives behind the attack appear to be linked to an earlier incident in which the suspect offered to clean the 95-year-old woman's windows. However, detectives now believe that he may have actually approached her with the intention of asking about bin collection day.
Detective Inspector Paul Davies from GMP's Salford district has praised the actions of the woman who intervened, saying: "This was a vile incident in which a woman was tied up and threatened." The force is working to bring the suspect to justice, and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
