Macclesfield 2-1 Crystal Palace: National League North Silkmen stun holders in biggest shock in FA Cup history

Crystal Palace suffered a historic 2-1 defeat at the hands of non-league side Macclesfield in the FA Cup, marking the biggest cup upset in competition history. The Eagles, holders of the trophy, were out-fought and out-thought by the Silkmen, who sit 117 places below them in the pyramid.

Paul Dawson scored the opener two minutes before half-time with a header from a set-piece, which Palace failed to respond to until the 13th minute when Yeremy Pino's shot was poked wide. However, Macclesfield took control of the game and doubled their lead on the hour through Isaac Buckley-Ricketts' shot.

The Palace faithful watched in dismay as the Eagles' attacking players failed to create clear-cut chances, with the team looking lethargic going forward and increasingly nervous in defense. Despite bringing on more attacking players at half-time, including England internationals Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton, Palace were unable to muster a response.

The only real attempt from the hosts came late on when Clinton Morrison described Palace as "an embarrassment", claiming that they were nowhere near good enough and that Macclesfield wanted it more. The visitors ultimately took advantage of this, with Pino scoring a 90th-minute free-kick to seal the win.

For Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, the defeat was a shock, saying that he had no explanation for what he saw on the pitch. "We lacked everything" he said. Meanwhile, Macclesfield manager John Rooney praised his team's performance, describing them as "incredible" and claiming that they deserved the win.

The result marked a major upset in FA Cup history and sent shockwaves through the football world. It also served as a fitting tribute to Macclesfield forward Ethan McLeod, who died in a car accident last month at the age of 21 after driving back from a game.

This is insane 🤯! I mean, Crystal Palace was supposed to be the ones taking it easy against some non-league side, but nope! Macclesfield totally outplayed them and deserved that win 1000%. The Eagles looked so off their game, it's like they were sleepwalking on the pitch 😴. I feel bad for Oliver Glasner though, he's gonna be scratching his head trying to figure out what went wrong.

And can we talk about Ethan McLeod for a sec? Rest in peace, kid 💔. Losing someone so young and talented is just heartbreaking. The fact that Macclesfield won the FA Cup as a tribute to him makes it even more special. It's gonna be a tough season ahead for Palace, but I'm loving this underdog story 🦊.

🤯 That Crystal Palace defeat is just wild. I mean, they're supposed to be holding that FA Cup trophy, and yet they get outplayed by a non-league side? Macclesfield was like the underdog story come true! 😂 The way Palace's attack was just...off is hard to explain. They had England internationals on the bench and still couldn't create anything meaningful. And to be honest, I kinda feel bad for Palace - they're a team that's been in some tough times recently. But at the same time, you've gotta respect Macclesfield for stepping up and getting the win. That 90th-minute free-kick was just insane! 😲

OMG 🤯 this is insane! I've never seen anything like it! A non-league side beating a Premier League team in the FA Cup? It's just mind-blowing! 😲 Crystal Palace were so out-fought and out-thought by Macclesfield, it was like they were a different team on the pitch. 🤦‍♂️ I feel bad for the Eagles fans who got robbed of their chance at defending the trophy. 👎 The only thing that's even more shocking is how well Macclesfield performed considering their league position. 117 places below Palace? They should be celebrating! 🎉 It's also a sad reminder of Ethan McLeod's passing, and I hope his family gets the support they need during this tough time ❤️.

man this is wild! Crystal palace getting hammered by some non-league team is like something out of a movie 🤯, i mean they're supposed to be the ones holding that trophy, not macclesfield! 😂 and olive glasner just says they lacked everything? what's up with that coach? 😐 anyway this is gonna make headlines for weeks and fans are gonna be talking about it forever 💬

🤯 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one! Crystal Palace was like, totally outmatched by those non-league players 🙈. They were so confident as holders of the trophy, but it looks like they took it for granted? Anyway, gotta give credit where credit is due - Macclesfield played an amazing game and deserved that win 💪! Their manager's comments about being "incredible" must be true 😂. Can't help but feel sorry for Palace and especially Ethan McLeod's family 🙏. The football world needs to be more supportive, you know? 👍

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this massive upset 🤯. Crystal Palace has been a powerhouse in football for years, and it's crazy to see them go down to a non-league team like Macclesfield. It just goes to show that anything can happen in the FA Cup - you can't underestimate teams from lower divisions at your own peril 💥.

It's also heartbreaking to think about what would've happened if Ethan McLeod was still with us 🙏. Losing someone so young and full of potential is devastating, and it's amazing how Macclesfield used this game as a way to honor his memory ❤️.

As for Palace's performance, it's clear that they were caught off guard by Macclesfield's tactics and determination 💪. You can't just sit back and wait for the other team to make mistakes - you have to take control of the game yourself 🚀. Maybe this is a wake-up call for them, an opportunity to regroup and come back stronger in the future 🔥.

Ugh I'm so over how slow games are getting on this platform 🤯! Can't believe Crystal Palace was absolutely thrashed by that non-league team Macclesfield 😱. I mean, 2-1 is a big upset, but come on, the Eagles should've been able to handle that kind of opposition! They're supposed to be the cup holders, for crying out loud! 🏆

And don't even get me started on the lack of live stats and updates 📊. I mean, it's not like we're watching a Premier League match or anything, but still, some basic info would be nice 😒.

I'm also so tired of all these dramatic comments from players after games 🤔. Clinton Morrison calling Crystal Palace an "embarrassment" is just unnecessary drama 💁‍♀️. Can't they just give us the facts and move on? 🙄

And what's with the lack of discussion threads for this topic? It's like you're trying to keep us in the dark 🔮. I mean, I get it, maybe we didn't see the game, but some explanation would be nice 🤷‍♂️.

Anyway, congrats to Macclesfield on their upset win! 👏 But can we please just have a decent discussion thread without all these drama queens? 😒

wow 😱 what a massive cup upset! i mean, crystal palace are supposed to be one of the top teams but macclesfield totally outplayed them 🤯 and deserved that win. i've been following the fa cup for years and never seen anything like this... 117 places below them in the pyramid, yikes! 😂 the eagles' fans must be devastated after that result 👎

blows my mind how crystal palace got smashed by those non-league macclesfields lol. i mean they've been holdin that trophy for years and gets knocked out by a team that's like 117 places below them in the pyramid? what can u say?

i think palace just had a bad day, but it's not all on them either. their manager oliver glasner seems pretty down in the dumps about it and i gotta respect that. at least he's bein honest with himself and his team about what went wrong.

on the other hand, those macclesfield lads are just livin their best life right now! they totally outperformed crystal palace and proved all the doubters wrong. i'm lovin it when underdogs pull off big upsets like this.

anyway, can't deny that it's a shame what happened to that young forward ethan mcleod from macclesfield. he was only 21 and had his whole career ahead of him. r.i.p mate

wow, can u believe that Crystal Palace got destroyed by a non-league team?! 😲 I mean, i've seen some big upsets in football history but this one takes the cake! Macclesfield's defense was solid and they outsmarted Palace at every turn 🤓

i feel bad for Palace fans who must be feeling so disappointed and frustrated after watching their team get dismantled like that 😔 They should've won that game hands down, especially with England internationals on the pitch 🤦‍♂️

the thing is, sometimes you gotta respect the underdog 🐾 Macclesfield played some amazing football and they deserved every bit of that win 💯 John Rooney's comments about his team being "incredible" are definitely warranted 🙌

What a massive cup fail from Palace 🤦‍♂️😱! Thought they were invincible after holding the trophy 💔. That Macclesfield team gave them a good drubbing 🎯. Poor Palace, looked like they didn't want it enough 😐. Guess that's what happens when you're not prepared for the big game 🤷‍♂️.

I mean, think about it... when you're up against someone who's way below your level, but still manage to beat you 2-1, it's not just about being out-fought or out-thought... it's also about mental toughness and being able to stay calm under pressure. Palace was clearly rattled and couldn't cope with the pressure, whereas Macclesfield stayed focused and believed in themselves. That's what makes this result so impressive 🤯. It teaches us that no matter how tough we think we are, we're always vulnerable to a bit of humility and hard work from someone else. We can all learn a thing or two from the underdog mentality! 💪

What a huge upset! I'm not surprised Palace got thrashed, they've been struggling lately 😳. Their defense looked so out of form and Macclesfield just took it to them. That free-kick by Pino was pure class 🙌. But what's worrying is that Palace's attacking players just couldn't create any chances... maybe they need some fresh legs in the summer? 🤔 Still, massive credit to Macclesfield for pulling off this incredible win - they've got spirit 💪. Can't say I'm too fussed about this result, more impressed by the bravery of the Silkmen after losing a friend 💕

OMG u guys lol wut is wrong wit Crystal palace?? 😱 dey got destroyed by non-league team macclesfield & now dey look like total embarrassment 💔 dey cant even win cup 🏆 i mean wat happened to all dat money dey spent on transfers & players 🤑 dey must have invested in de wrong places 👀 & de coach oliver glasner is clueless 🤦‍♂️ dey just lost everythin' 🎉 macclesfield deserved dat win 4 sure 💯

OMG u guys cant even imagine how devastating this loss is for palace fans 😭!!! i mean we're supposed to be the holders of the trophy but Macclesfield just out played us by like 100x 🤯! their defense was on point and our offense was so lacking 📉. i'm still trying to process what happened in that game, it's like a nightmare come true 😴. graham poll ⚽️ can't even give me hope anymore 👎

😱 Can you believe Crystal Palace just got destroyed by a non-league team? I mean, I know they're not used to playing against teams like Macclesfield, but still... two goals from set-pieces? That's just not what you want from your top-tier squad. And the way they seemed to just give up in the second half was really concerning. It's like they were intimidated by a non-league team? 🤷‍♂️

And I have to feel for Oliver Glasner, he seems really out of his depth here. "We lacked everything"? That's pretty blunt, but at least he's being honest about what happened. And John Rooney's praise for Macclesfield was just... deserved, I guess? They did play a great game and they definitely deserved the win.

But you have to wonder what this says about Crystal Palace as a whole team right now. Are they really that bad, or was it just one of those nights where everything went wrong? 🤔

OMG 🤯 this FA Cup upset is insane!! I mean, Crystal Palace were the holders and all, but Macclesfield was like a different team out there 😂! They really out-thought them and Paul Dawson's goal was sick 💪! And poor Palace's defense was shakier than a leaf in autumn 🍁. But what's even more amazing is that Ethan McLeod's memory lives on through this win - he may not have made it to the final, but his team did for him ❤️! The FA Cup can be unpredictable and all, but this one takes the cake...or should I say, the trophy 🎉😂

omg what a result!!! Crystal Palace was absolutely smashed by Macclesfield 🤯! I've never seen anything like this before - they're supposed to be the holders of the trophy and they get beat by non-league side? crazy! 💥 It's clear that Palace were not on form, their attacking players were super lethargic and defensive was all over the place 😴. And can you blame them for looking nervous with all those experienced England players getting brought in at half-time? 🤔 but still no luck for them. the only decent attempt came from Clinton Morrison who literally said Palace was an embarrassment lol 😂 anyway, major respect to Macclesfield, they played incredible and deserved that win! 💪

omg can't believe this just happened 🤯 crystal palace was expected to win and hold onto that fa cup trophy but macclesfield totally destroyed them 💥 i feel for palace, they've been in a slump lately and it's clear that they need some major changes behind the scenes. john rooney is literally on fire right now as macclesfield manager - his team played with so much heart and determination 🙌 also gotta give props to ethan mcleod's family for handling this loss so well 😔
