Boston City Council Sees Minimal Change as Incumbents Retain Seats in Landslide Victories.
In a relatively uneventful election season, the Boston City Council's at-large seats saw a turnover of familiar faces, with most incumbents easily defeating their opponents. However, a key seat changed hands when Rev. Miniard Culpepper, a newcomer to the council, secured the District 7 seat that was previously held by Tania Fernandes Anderson.
According to unofficial city results as of 11:30 pm on Tuesday night, Henry Santana will retain his at-large seat after defeating former Councilor Frank Baker in a landslide victory. Mayor Michelle Wu confirmed Santana's win, stating that he came in fourth place with an overwhelming re-election margin.
Wu expressed her support for Santana during an election night party, saying "City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune was the clear ticket topper... City Councilor Henry Santana β overwhelmingly reelected in a landslide." Her comments were met with cheers from supporters and fans of the mayor's coalition.
While Santana emerged victorious, Baker's defeat leaves open the possibility for future challenges to his seat. Wu, who won her second term as mayor, appeared to capitalize on Baker's loss by securing Santana's endorsement.
As expected, most district councilors handily defeated their opponents in their re-election bids. These winners include: Gabriela Coletta Zapata (District 1), Ed Flynn (District 2), Brian Worrell (District 4), Enrique PepΓ©n (District 5), Ben Weber (District 6), and Liz Breadon (District 9). Sharon Durkan, who ran unopposed for District 8, will also return to the council.
The election results indicate that Boston City Council will continue to function as it has in recent years, with minimal changes expected.
