Couture Fashion Designer Bob Mackie Sues JCPenney Over Unauthorized 'Mackie' Clothing Line
Bob Mackie, the renowned fashion designer behind iconic looks for stars like Cher and Tina Turner, has filed a lawsuit against JCPenney department store, claiming that the retailer is using his name without permission to sell a new clothing line called "Mackie: Bob Mackie".
According to Mackie's complaint, which was filed in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday, the fashion designer had no knowledge of the collection being created until news of it started circulating and media outlets such as Page Six and USA Today began reporting that he was behind the designs.
However, Mackie disputes JCPenney's claim, stating that even if the Bob Mackie Design Group - of which he is a minority shareholder - gave permission for the use of his name, it did not have the authority to do so. The lawsuit also accuses JCPenney of releasing the clothing line without his consent in an attempt to capitalize on Taylor Swift's new album "The Life of a Showgirl", which features one of Mackie's designs.
Representatives from the Bob Mackie Design Group have described the lawsuit as "completely baseless" and stated that they have full rights to use and license the Bob Mackie trademark.

JCPenney is just trying to make a quick buck off Bob Mackie's good name, but they're not even being subtle about it They just started selling this 'Mackie' clothing line without even checking in with the actual designer! And now Bob's all like "Hey, what's going on here?" and he's suing them for it
They just started selling this 'Mackie' clothing line without even checking in with the actual designer! And now Bob's all like "Hey, what's going on here?" and he's suing them for it It's just common sense, you'd think. If JCPenney wants to use someone's name and designs, they need to have permission from that person first. I don't get why they didn't do their research before launching this thing

So JCPenney thinks it can just slap someone's name on a clothing line and get away with it? It's like, basic intellectual property 101, folks...

They're trying to ride the coattails of Taylor Swift's album while also profiting off Bob Mackie's reputation. This is what happens when you prioritize profit over respect for creators...

it's just not right. they must be thinking he's gonna sue them out of pocket or something. but seriously tho, its kinda shady how they just went ahead and created the "mackie" line without even getting permission from bob himself. i mean, i know taylor swifts new album has some pretty cool designs, but come on, thats no excuse for jcpenny to try to profit off of someone elses work
