New York City's 12-day streak without a homicide ended in tragic fashion on Sunday when 38-year-old Gregory Stewart was fatally shot at a public housing complex in the Bronx. The victim, Sean Grant, 28, is now facing charges of murder, manslaughter, and weapons offenses in connection with the killing.
According to authorities, the shooting took place around 9 p.m. at the Sotomayor Houses on Watson Avenue in Soundview, where Grant was a resident. Stewart, who lived over four miles away in Wakefield, had been involved in a dispute related to an earlier shooting incident earlier this month, which police believe may have led up to the fatal confrontation.
Grant was taken into custody just two blocks away from the scene of the crime, near the intersection of Rosedale and Westchester avenues, about 15 minutes after the shooting. Police found him carrying a loaded 9mm pistol in his pants at the time of his arrest.
Grant appeared before a judge on Tuesday morning and was ordered held without bail. His lawyer has not commented on the case so far.
The fatal shooting marked an end to a record-breaking streak of violence, tying a similar stretch in 2015 that lasted for 12 days. The NYPD reported a significant increase in shootings in the 43rd Precinct area, with a 39% rise in incidents year-to-date as of December 7 compared to the same point last year.
Despite this uptick in violence, citywide statistics show a decline in shootings and homicides over the past year. According to officials, the city has seen its lowest number of shooting incidents and victims in recorded history so far this year. However, police are still investigating the motive behind the fatal shooting on Sunday.
