Bronx man charged with fatally shooting 38-year-old at NYCHA building

New York City's 12-day streak without a homicide ended in tragic fashion on Sunday when 38-year-old Gregory Stewart was fatally shot at a public housing complex in the Bronx. The victim, Sean Grant, 28, is now facing charges of murder, manslaughter, and weapons offenses in connection with the killing.

According to authorities, the shooting took place around 9 p.m. at the Sotomayor Houses on Watson Avenue in Soundview, where Grant was a resident. Stewart, who lived over four miles away in Wakefield, had been involved in a dispute related to an earlier shooting incident earlier this month, which police believe may have led up to the fatal confrontation.

Grant was taken into custody just two blocks away from the scene of the crime, near the intersection of Rosedale and Westchester avenues, about 15 minutes after the shooting. Police found him carrying a loaded 9mm pistol in his pants at the time of his arrest.

Grant appeared before a judge on Tuesday morning and was ordered held without bail. His lawyer has not commented on the case so far.

The fatal shooting marked an end to a record-breaking streak of violence, tying a similar stretch in 2015 that lasted for 12 days. The NYPD reported a significant increase in shootings in the 43rd Precinct area, with a 39% rise in incidents year-to-date as of December 7 compared to the same point last year.

Despite this uptick in violence, citywide statistics show a decline in shootings and homicides over the past year. According to officials, the city has seen its lowest number of shooting incidents and victims in recorded history so far this year. However, police are still investigating the motive behind the fatal shooting on Sunday.

man thats so crazy that 12 days without no murder ended with some dude getting shot and now he's in big trouble 😱 what's going on with these public housing complexes? it feels like they're breeding grounds for all this violence 🀯 the numbers are actually pretty surprising though - a decline in shootings and homicides overall, but also a big spike in that one area πŸ“‰ does anyone know why that is happening?

Man... 38 yrs old man just gets shot and killed in broad daylight at a public housing complex πŸ€―β€β™‚οΈ. It's like, what's going on with our society? We can't even feel safe walking around our own neighborhoods anymore. I mean, the numbers do show that shootings are down citywide, but this one incident brings all that back to life πŸ’”.

I'm not making excuses for anyone involved in these incidents, but it's clear we need to tackle the underlying issues of poverty, inequality and lack of opportunities πŸ€‘. We can't just keep ignoring these problems and expecting things to magically get better. It's like we're sleepwalking into a disaster 😴.

We need to start having more conversations about what we can do to prevent this kind of violence from happening in the first place πŸ’¬. Community programs, job training, mental health services - these are all important investments that could make a real difference 🌟. We can't just keep relying on law enforcement to solve our problems; they need support and resources too πŸš”.

It's like we're playing whack-a-mole with violence; every time we think we've solved one problem, another pops up 😬. We need to be more proactive about addressing these issues before it's too late πŸ’₯.

this is crazy 🀯 another 12-day streak without a homicide ends with someone getting shot πŸ’€ it's like, what's going on here? one minute we're seeing a record-low number of shootings and then BAM! this happens. i'm not saying sean grant didn't do something wrong but 28 years old facing murder charges is just insane 😱. and the fact that he was arrested with a loaded gun in his pants is just wild πŸ€ͺ. the nypd needs to get their act together, can't they see what's happening? all this violence is just not adding up πŸ€”.

πŸ˜• my heart goes out to the family & friends of Gregory Stewart... a senseless loss of life πŸ€•. 12 days without a homicide was a good run, but I guess that's just part of life 🌎. it's crazy how things can escalate so quickly from a dispute over something earlier in the month 😳. what's really gonna happen is that Sean Grant will face trial and hopefully find some peace... meanwhile we gotta keep working towards a safer NYC for everyone πŸ’–.

Ugh, man 😩... just when we thought things were gonna be better, another senseless tragedy hits New York City πŸ€•. I mean, 12 days without a homicide? That's like, a record for a reason πŸ“š. And now this? It feels like the violence is coming back full force πŸ’₯.

I'm all for keeping the streets safe and holding people accountable for their actions, but sometimes it feels like we're just sweeping issues under the rug 🧹. Like what happened with Sean Grant - he's being held without bail over a shooting that might have been connected to an earlier incident? It's frustrating πŸ’”.

I guess what I'm saying is, let's keep trying to find solutions that actually work πŸ”. We need to address the underlying issues and support our communities in real ways 🀝. This city has so much heart and potential - let's not give up on each other πŸ’–.

πŸ˜• This is just heartbreaking, another innocent life lost in the Bronx πŸ€•. The fact that it ended a streak of 12 days without a homicide is just a cruel twist πŸŒͺ️. You'd think that with all the progress we've made towards reducing violence, we wouldn't still see such senseless tragedies πŸ’”. And what's really sad is that Sean Grant was already facing charges related to an earlier shooting incident πŸ˜•. I'm not buying into the idea that this was just a random act of violence - there has to be more to it than that πŸ€”. As for the NYPD's 39% rise in shootings in one precinct, it's got everyone on edge 🚨. The city may see overall numbers decline, but when you have areas like this where violence is so prevalent, it's a ticking time bomb ⏰. We need to get to the root of these issues and work towards creating safer communities for everyone 🌈.

You know what's crazy? I was at the park yesterday with my kids and we saw a squirrel steal a kid's sandwich πŸΏοΈπŸ˜‚. Like, it just walked up to them, snatched it, and ran off. My kid was so mad but I just laughed because it was too funny. Anyway, back to New York City... I've been thinking of visiting the Bronx sometime. Have you ever been? The food is supposed to be amazing πŸ΄πŸ‘Œ. But anyway, tragic news about this guy getting shot... hope his family is okay πŸ’”.

I just saw that news about Gregory Stewart... I don't know how someone can just shoot another person over a disagreement 🀯. I live in an apartment complex that has security cameras, it's so reassuring to think that our safety is being monitored 24/7. Do you think the new police officer on my block knows anything about surveillance systems? My neighbor's dog always seems to be getting into trouble, does anyone know if dogs can be trained to detect certain sounds or movements?

Ugh, can you believe it? It's like they're reenacting some kinda bad movie πŸŽ₯πŸ’”. I mean, 12 days without a homicide is impressive, but then you gotta go and break that streak... literally 😒. The dude's name was Sean Grant, and now he's got more charges than my old flip phone had apps πŸ“±πŸ€―. And the motive behind this? Still unclear, just like in all those true crime docos I binge-watch on Netflix πŸ“Ί.

And, omigod, 38 homicides already this year? It's like they're trying to break some kinda record... for bad news 😨. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the city is seeing a decline overall, but sometimes you gotta feel bad for those innocent people caught in the crossfire πŸ’”.

You know what's even crazier? I was talking to my grandma the other day about how violent it used to be back in her neighborhood in Brooklyn... the 90s were rough πŸŒƒ. But times have changed, and we thought we'd made progress. Guess not πŸ˜•.

omg what's goin on with NYC 🀯 12 days without a homicide is like, crazy! but then this happens & it feels like all progress is just gonna get taken away πŸ˜” anyways, think about it...the NYPD said shootings in the 43rd Precinct area have gone up by 39% already in Dec '24. that's wild. 🀯 on the other hand, city-wide stats show a decline in shooting incidents & homicides overall. so what's the deal? is it just the fact that more guns are gettin used that makes stats look bad or is there somethin else goin on? anyway, hope Sean Grant gets help & support he needs right now πŸ’•

I'm no expert but it sounds like the good people of New York City are just trying to live their best lives and still manage to have someone kill each other πŸ˜‚. I mean, 12 days without a homicide is still pretty impressive if you ask me. Maybe we should just make this streak a thing and see how long they can keep it up? 🀣

I'm soooo glad that streak ended lol πŸ™„... just kidding kinda πŸ˜‚. Seriously though, I don't think it's a good idea for him to be held without bail, considering he was carrying a loaded gun when arrested πŸ€”. But at the same time, I mean, 28 is still pretty young to be facing murder charges and all that πŸ’€. And on the other hand, I'm not saying Sean should get off scot-free or anything... but can't we just try to understand what happened before jumping to conclusions? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Man... it's just crazy how quickly things can escalate. I've lived in NYC for a while now, and you'd think that after all these years, people would learn to resolve their issues peacefully. But nope, sometimes it feels like we're stuck in some kind of never-ending cycle of violence πŸ€•.

I'm not going to sit here and say that the system is broken or anything like that... but I do think we need to take a closer look at how we're addressing these kinds of issues. Community programs, job training, mental health support - there's gotta be more we can do to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the first place.

It's just so sad for the families involved and the innocent bystanders who get caught up in it all πŸ˜”. We need to keep pushing for change and finding ways to make our city a safer, more compassionate place for everyone πŸ’•.

Man... this is just so sad πŸ€•. A 12-day streak without a homicide in NYC ends like that? It's crazy how quickly things can go from calm to chaos. I feel bad for Gregory Stewart's family, they must be going through an impossible time right now πŸ˜”.

I'm trying not to think about the what-ifs, but it's hard not to wonder if there was something that could've been done differently to prevent this senseless violence πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. The fact that Sean Grant had a loaded gun on him at the time of his arrest is just wild... how did he even end up with that? 😲

On a brighter note, it's still good to hear that the citywide stats are looking better overall πŸ™. Maybe this incident will be a wake-up call for us all to take a closer look at our communities and figure out ways to support each other more πŸ’–. We need to keep working towards a safer, more compassionate world 🌎.

Wow 🀯, 38 days without a homicide was looking good for NYC but now it's back to reality, sadly πŸ’”. What's really concerning is that a 28 yr old is facing murder charges 😱, and how did they carry a loaded gun in their pants during arrest? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Police investigation needs to get to the bottom of motive behind this fatal shooting ASAP πŸ”.
