Archaeologists say they have proof humans carved huge pits near Stonehenge

Scientists have finally unearthed proof that ancient humans carved massive pits near one of the world's most iconic prehistoric sites, Stonehenge. The Durrington pit circle, as it has come to be known, is an extraordinary structure stretching over 1 mile across with a series of yawning pits thought to be around 10 meters wide and 5 meters deep. What's remarkable about this site is that the sheer scale of the pits suggests its creators needed to keep track of their position in some way - too big to be created by sight alone.

Researchers have been working on deciphering the mystery behind the pit circle, employing a novel combination of cutting-edge scientific techniques. Initially met with skepticism, the team has since proved conclusively that the pits were indeed carved out by humans over 4,000 years ago. Prof Vincent Gaffney, lead researcher and expert in archaeology, attributes their success to using multiple types of geophysics equipment to establish the size and shape of the pits.

One critical aspect of the research involved analyzing soil cores extracted from the site. The team employed various techniques, including optically stimulated luminescence and "sedDNA" to recover animal and plant DNA from the soil. Gaffney's assertion that these patterns cannot be explained by natural occurrences is compelling: "They can't be occurring naturally... We think we've nailed it."

According to Gaffney, the pits may have been dug in the late Neolithic period, possibly linked to a deep-seated belief in an underworld. The exact purpose behind this monumental excavation remains unknown, but Gaffney surmised that the site likely held spiritual significance for its creators.

The implications of this groundbreaking discovery are profound, offering insights into the cosmology and beliefs of ancient cultures. As Gaffney noted, "If it's going to happen anywhere in Britain, it's going to happen at Stonehenge."

omg can you even imagine digging a pit that big like what were they thinking 💥🌳 i mean stonehenge is already mind blown but this new discovery is on another level it's crazy to think about how many people it took to dig something that massive and for how long too 🕰️ i'm also intrigued by the idea of an underworld connection it adds a whole new layer to the mystery what do you guys think was the purpose behind these pits? 🤔 maybe we'll never know but isn't it cool that we get to learn more about our ancient ancestors? 😎

I mean, who wouldn't want to spend 4K years digging massive pits near one of the world's most iconic tourist traps... I mean, cultural landmarks? Like, what's next? Digging a moat around your backyard and calling it an archaeological site? 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, I guess it's cool that they finally figured out who made the Durrington pit circle. No idea why they're so stoked about it though... "We think we've nailed it"... sure, happy now? 💁‍♀️

I mean, I'm not surprised they found out someone dug those massive pits at Stonehenge 🤷‍♂️. It's like, what else were the ancient Brits gonna do with all that space? 😂 The fact that it was some kinda navigation tool is pretty cool, but honestly, who needs GPS when you've got a 1-mile-wide pit circle to keep track of your position? 🤦‍♂️

And I'm not buying the spiritual significance thing, like they're trying to say the ancient Brits were all about an underworld vibe 🌪️. Come on, it's just a bunch of rocks and pits. Can't we just enjoy it as an engineering marvel or something? 🔩

The fact that it took multiple types of geophysics equipment to figure out what was going on is pretty impressive, I guess. But the whole "they can't be occurring naturally" thing is just like... yeah, sure, prof 🙄. Can we have a real explanation for once? 💡

I'm thinking about what would've been going through the minds of those ancient humans who carved out the massive pits... 🤯 Like, they must have had some pretty strong reasons for creating something so huge and complex. And I love how this discovery is helping us learn more about their way of life - it's like uncovering a piece of history that was hidden beneath our feet 💥. The idea that these pits might've held spiritual significance is really intriguing, but at the same time, I'm wondering if there were other reasons behind its construction... maybe something more practical? 🤔

🤯 I mean, can you imagine having to create a whole other navigation system just for digging these massive pits?! Like, what if you were like 2 miles away and had to navigate back? It's wild that they needed this many tracks to build something as epic as the Durrington pit circle 🌆. Also, sedDNA is lit 🔍! Who knew we could recover DNA from ancient soil cores? That's like some crazy sci-fi stuff right there 😲. I'm curious about what kinda rituals or ceremonies went down at these pits tho... maybe they were like cosmic navigation tools for their ancient ancestors 👽

idk how cool it is that they finally figured out what happened at stonehenge 🤔... i mean its def impressive that the pits are like 1 mile long and all but like, what's the point of digging something that big without a way to measure it? 🤷‍♂️ they gotta have had some kind of system in place or it would've been super hard to construct on that scale. also, i'm not sure if its true that they found evidence of animal dna in the soil... might be some kinda contamination issue 😐

I don’t usually comment but I just found out about this crazy new discovery near Stonehenge 🤯 and I have to say, it’s blowing my mind! Like, we already knew that Stonehenge was super important but to think that there's another massive structure hidden beneath the surface for thousands of years is just wow...

I don’t know what kind of geophysics equipment they used or how they got the soil cores to test for DNA, but I guess it’s kinda cool that they figured out who actually built this thing? Like, it’s not just some random natural formation anymore. And the idea that it might have held spiritual significance is like, totally mind-blowing 🤷‍♀️.

I’m also kinda curious about what Gaffney meant by saying that these patterns can’t be explained by natural occurrences... did they find out something weird about the soil or the animals in the area? I don’t know, I just wish I could see some actual videos of the pits themselves!

I'm not surprised that more ancient structures have been found with some kinda deep meaning behind them 🤔. I mean, can you imagine digging 1 mile long pits without GPS? It's mind-blowing how those people were able to create such an intricate site just 4,000 years ago. The fact that they used soil cores and other techniques to get the DNA info from ancient plants and animals is like something out of a sci-fi movie 🚀. I'm curious to know more about the purpose behind this monumental excavation - was it for spiritual reasons or something else entirely?

🤯 I mean, can you believe it? They've finally figured out what those massive pits were for at Stonehenge! It's wild to think that our ancestors were trying to keep track of their position while digging these massive structures. The scale of it is just mind-blowing. And the fact that they used multiple techniques like geophysics and soil analysis to prove it? That's some serious detective work right there 🔍.

I'm also loving the idea that this site might have had spiritual significance for our ancient forebears. It's crazy to think about what kind of beliefs they must have had that led them to create something so massive. I'm not surprised that Gaffney thinks it's a deep-seated belief in an underworld, though - there's definitely some weird and wonderful stuff out there in ancient mythology 😏.

One thing that does make me wonder is how much more we're going to uncover at Stonehenge. Like Gaffney said, if you're going to find something huge, it's probably going to be here! 🤔 Can't wait to see what other secrets this place has up its sleeve 🔮

idk about this one 🤔... 4k yrs ago ppl made these massive pits at stonehenge? sounds like they had some serious skills lol. but, gotta say, the fact that they used soil cores and geophysics equipment to figure it out is pretty cool 🔍. but, i'm still thinking... how did they not just get lost or something? the scale of those pits is massive 🤯. and, what's up with the underworld thing? sounds like some ancient conspiracy theory 🤫. anyway, im curious to see more about this site and how it all went down 👀

I'm like totally stoked about this new discovery at Stonehenge 🤯! I mean, 4k years ago, these ancient humans created something so massive and complex, it blows my mind. The fact that they had to keep track of their position while digging these pits is just wild. And the soil cores they analyzed? Game changer. It's crazy to think that we can still learn from them today.

I'm also curious about what Gaffney said about the site possibly being linked to an underworld. I don't know if I buy into all that spiritual stuff, but it's definitely cool to think that these ancient cultures had some deep understanding of the world around them. Anyway, it's awesome that we're getting more info about our history and can learn from the past in a major way 💡

idk why people think these pits were just natural formations lol they must've had some sort of map or tracker thingy to build them on such a massive scale 🤔🏰 anyway its crazy to think about what might've been the purpose behind it, maybe some ancient ceremony or something?

I'm totally blown away by this new info about the Durrington pit circle! 🤯 I mean, 1 mile across? That's insane! And the fact that they needed some way to keep track of their position while digging it is mind-blowing. The soil cores with animal and plant DNA from like 4k years ago are super cool too - it's crazy how scientists were able to recover that info using all those fancy techniques 🧬💡

idk about all this digging up old pits business 🤔... seems like a lot of effort just to create some massive holes, right? 🌎 i mean, what's the point of even doing that? was it for some kinda spiritual thingy or somethin'? 🙏 don't get me wrong, it's cool and all that they figured out how to do it with all those fancy geophysics tools, but can we just enjoy the fact that ancient humans were creative without makin' a mountain outta nothin'? 🌊

This is just mind-blowing 🤯... I mean, can you even imagine carving something that massive? Like, what was their thought process? They must've had some serious understanding of math and engineering back then. And the fact that they could track their position using these giant pits is wild. It's like they were trying to create this huge, cosmic map 🗺️... I'm not sure what to make of the underworld connection though, maybe it's just a bit too deep for me 😅. But seriously, this discovery is going to change our understanding of ancient human societies and their connection to the universe. It's like, whoa! 🌐

🤔 gotta say, I'm loving this new info about Durrington pit circle... I mean, can you even imagine the scale of this thing? 🌆 Like, 1 mile across and all those pits... that's some serious construction skills right there! 😎 And I'm with Prof Gaffney on this one - the fact that they're trying to nail down the exact date using optically stimulated luminescence and sedDNA is wild. It's like they're trying to solve a ancient puzzle 🧩

And yeah, the connection to an underworld is pretty intriguing too... I'm not saying it's true or anything, but it'd be awesome if we could learn more about what was going on in those ancient minds 🤯. The fact that it's got spiritual significance for its creators makes total sense - I mean, Stonehenge already feels like this mystical place, right? ✨

What do you guys think? Should we start digging (pun intended) into the history of this site even more? 💡

🤔 I mean, can you even imagine digging a pit that big by just using your eyes? Like, 1 mile across and only like 5 meters deep? That's crazy! 🤯 And the fact that they used all these different techniques to prove it was made by humans is pretty cool. I think it's awesome that scientists are still working on figuring out what this place meant to the people who built it. Maybe we'll learn more about their cosmology and beliefs and stuff... 💡 It's definitely a big deal for archaeologists and history buffs like me! 😊

🤔 This is so mind-blowing! I mean, can you imagine digging 1 mile long pits just to keep track of your position? 🌐 That's like building a giant maze or something. And the fact that they did it 4,000 years ago is just wow...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole "underworld" thing though. Like, what if this was actually some sort of ancient GPS system? 😂 But at the same time, I get why Gaffney thinks it's more spiritual in nature. It's like they were trying to connect with something deeper... 🌈

I love how scientists are still uncovering new things about our history. There's always so much we don't know! 💡 And this discovery is definitely one for the books. I mean, who needs TV or movies when you have ancient humans digging massive pits? 📺
