The Las Vegas region faces planned reductions of up to 70% of its Colorado River water over the next decade, threatening basic needs. In Yuma, Arizona, farmers struggle to plan for the future due to their reliance on winter crops: “There’s no food we grow in a hurry,” notes John Boelts, president of the Arizona Farm Bureau.

Decades of drought and overuse have depleted the Colorado River system, leaving Western reservoirs at record lows. Lake Mead and Lake Powell hit new low points in February, while eight other reservoirs operated by the Bureau of Reclamation recorded their lowest levels in at least 30 years. Although El Niño may bring some relief to the northern Rockies and Southwest in the coming months, it won’t erase decades of drought.

The consequences of this crisis will be far-reaching. Residents will face higher water costs, farmers will have to adapt to reduced water supplies leading to food shortages and economic losses, and local ecosystems will suffer as altered water flows disrupt delicate balances.
