What to know about the partial government shutdown as funding lapses for many agencies

Washington, D.C. is facing a partial government shutdown as Congress failed to pass six spending bills before the deadline, leaving many federal agencies without funding. The Senate voted late Friday to approve a five-bill package that would extend funding for the Department of Homeland Security for two weeks, while House Democrats had threatened to withhold their support unless the DHS bill was revised.

The Trump administration's approach to immigration enforcement has been at the center of this funding fight. Since the longest shutdown in U.S. history last fall, lawmakers have been working on individual spending bills to fund federal agencies through September 2026. Congress has already passed and signed six of these bills, but the remaining six are the focus of the current funding battle.

Bipartisan talks appeared to have yielded a deal in recent weeks, with the Senate releasing the text of the funding measures on January 20. However, the deadly shooting of Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis and then Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents last weekend changed the calculus for Senate Democrats, who came out fiercely against funding for DHS without further reforms.

In a last-minute move, Senate Democrats struck a deal with the White House, which would support the five non-DHS funding bills, while extending funding for DHS at current levels for two weeks. The deal still needs to be approved by the House, and the lower chamber isn't set to return to Washington until Monday.

The shutdown is not expected to affect the Trump administration's immigration enforcement campaign, as DHS received an infusion of roughly $165 billion in last year's One Big Beautiful Bill Act. However, many federal agencies are affected, including the Department of Defense, State Department, and Department of Labor.

In contrast, six appropriations bills have already been approved by both chambers, funding agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Agriculture, and Food and Drug Administration through September 2026.

A government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass funding for some or all agencies, which are funded annually by a dozen appropriations bills. The law known as the Antideficiency Act prohibits federal agencies from spending funds that have not been authorized by Congress.

The shutdown could last relatively quickly if House conservatives back down on their demands, but it's uncertain. Republicans are dealing with a razor-thin majority in the House, and Democrats could decide to help propel it to final passage.

Once the funding package reaches the House Rules Committee, one of the next steps is a procedural vote on the rule, which would typically be approved by the majority in a party-line vote. However, several conservatives have already warned that they could withhold their votes if their demands aren't met.

Ugh I just don't get why Congress can't pass those spending bills already πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. It's like, come on guys, we need to fund some of these agencies or else what's gonna happen? People are gonna lose their jobs, services are gonna be shut down... it's all kinda crazy. And now there's this whole thing about DHS funding and immigration enforcement, I'm just so done with that πŸ™„. Can't they just find a compromise already? The Trump administration is making this even harder by not wanting to budge on their stance on immigration. It's just so frustrating 😑.

πŸ€” Another government shutdown... how original. I mean, who doesn't love the thrill of potentially losing paychecks and seeing federal agencies grind to a halt?

It's actually kinda sad that we're at this point again. The Trump admin's immigration enforcement approach has been super contentious, but can't they just agree on something already? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Like, we get it, there are no easy answers, but can't we just try to be decent human beings for once?

The fact that Senate Democrats are holding out for more reforms is a good thing, I guess. Maybe this shutdown will prompt some actual progress. But let's not forget, the DHS bill still needs House approval, so there's always a chance it'll drag on.

One thing's for sure: our favorite lawmakers love to play politics during times of crisis. πŸ’Έ Who needs bipartisanship when you can have a good ol' fashioned shutdown fight?

I'm rooting for the House conservatives to back down and get this over with ASAP. Let's just hope no one gets hurt (literally or figuratively) in the process 🀞

omg dont think this is going to last long πŸ˜‚ 5 bill package was passed by senate but still need approval from house πŸ€” and we all know how crazy house can get lol 165 billion infused into DHS last year and that's like a big cushion πŸ’Έ so hopefully shutdown wont be too bad for most people πŸ™

Shutdown season is back! πŸ“Š Who needs DHS funding when you can just use that $165 billion from last year? πŸ’Έ [GIF of money pouring into a fishbowl, then the fish swimming away]

House conservatives: "We want it all!" πŸ˜‚ Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are like, "Uh, we just need DHS funding, please?" πŸ™

πŸ€” This shutdown is crazy! I mean, we've seen some tough fights over funding before, but this one's got everyone on edge. It feels like the whole system's just grinding to a halt 🚫. And honestly, it's hard not to wonder what all this means for the Trump administration's immigration policies... it seems like they're getting exactly what they wanted from Congress πŸ’Έ. But at the same time, some people are saying that the DHS bill is too watered down and doesn't do enough to address their concerns πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. I guess only time will tell how this all plays out πŸ•°οΈ.

πŸ€” The whole thing just seems so frustrating πŸ™„. I don't get why it's always about money πŸ€‘ and politics πŸ—³οΈ instead of working together to help people πŸ’•. I mean, DHS is supposed to keep us safe, right? But it feels like they're not even trying to find a compromise πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

And what really gets my goat πŸ‘ is that all these federal agencies are affected πŸ“. Like, how's the military gonna function without funding πŸ’Έ? And for the Department of Labor, I just think about all those people who are struggling to make ends meet πŸ€•.

I wish lawmakers would focus on finding solutions instead of trying to one-up each other πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ. Can't we all just get along? 🀝

🚨😬 This partial shutdown thingy is getting super messy. I think Congress needs to sort out their priorities and stop playing politics with people's lives. 🀝 Immigration reform is crucial, but not at the expense of millions of federal employees who are already struggling with the current lack of funding. πŸ’Έ It's crazy that six bills got passed easily, but this last one is causing a whole lot of drama 🀯. If they can't agree on this, how are we supposed to know what's going to happen? πŸ˜•

Ugh, this is getting ridiculous πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. The fact that Congress can't even agree on funding for some basic agencies is a joke. I mean, come on, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Food and Drug Administration have bills approved already? What's going on with DHS? Is it really that important to wait two whole weeks to extend their funding? πŸ€” And don't even get me started on the Trump administration's immigration enforcement... it's like they're trying to make a mess out of everything. Can't they just focus on getting some real work done for once? πŸ˜’

πŸ˜’ u gotta wonder what's goin on with these politicians man... 1 week ago they were all about passin that DHS bill and now it's like "forget about it" πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ the Senate was all set, but then this shooting thing happened and suddenly everything changed πŸ’” can't we just have a smooth process for once? πŸ™„ i mean 6 bills are already done, but they gotta make a big deal outta the last two... πŸ˜’

This shutdown thingy is getting out of hand 🀯! I mean, can't we all just get along? The government's always trying to pass these spending bills, but then someone gets shot or whatever and suddenly everyone's all upset. Like, what's the big deal about DHS funding anyway? It's not like it's going to make a huge difference in our daily lives... I mean, we're already getting by without it πŸ˜’. And don't even get me started on the Trump administration's immigration stuff - can't they just find some common ground or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But seriously, when does this ever end? It feels like we're stuck in some never-ending cycle of drama and politicking πŸ•°οΈ.

Ugh, this shutdown thing is gonna drag on for ages lol πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Congress is just too unpredictable right now. I mean, one minute they're all smiles and agreements, next minute they're at each other's throats over a few bucks. And it's not like the DHS bill was that hard to agree on... I guess they just wanted to make sure those immigration laws were still in effect πŸ€”. But honestly, who knows when this will be resolved? The whole thing feels so messy and politicized... and of course, someone's gonna get hurt because of it 😬.

πŸ€” just thinkin', a government shutdown is like when u got no cash for ur phone bill πŸ“± and u gotta wait till mom or dad pays it off. but in this case, its not just about payin' bills, its about fundin' agencies that do important stuff like helpin' people with jobs and healthcare 🀝. i feel bad for the ppl who are gonna be affected by this shutdown tho πŸ’”. and what's with all these twists and turns? bipartisan talks, deals, and still no clear winner πŸ”„. hope everything gets sorted out soon πŸ•°οΈ!

πŸ€” so whats up with this gov shutdown tho? like they cant agree on a measly six spending bills. its getting out of hand. πŸ€‘ the trump admins approach to immigration is super messed up and now were paying for it. 😩 DHS funding for two weeks sounds like a half baked solution if u ask me. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ what happened to bipartisanship? πŸ™„ house republicans are still holding out for something they want but their demands seem legit. πŸ’Έ its all about the money and the power. πŸ€‘

I'm so frustrated about this government shutdown 🀯. I mean, can't we just agree on funding for our agencies? It's not like it's going to break the bank or anything. The fact that it's all about immigration enforcement is really concerning for me. We need to be more considerate of people who are already struggling to make ends meet. πŸ˜”

I'm also worried about how this will affect the most vulnerable members of our society, like veterans and workers at federal agencies. They're going to get hurt by this shutdown, no matter what side of the aisle they're on. 🀝

And can we please just talk about something else for once? Politics can be so draining. Let's try to find common ground and work together, even if it means compromising a bit. πŸ’‘

I wonder how long it'll take for Congress to figure this out and come up with a solution that works for everyone. Fingers crossed 🀞!

The shutdown thingy πŸ€”... I mean, it's crazy how politics can get in the way of things we need to function. It feels like we're always back and forth on these things. The Trump admin's approach to immigration is a big part of this, but I don't really understand why it has to be so divisive. Can't we just find a middle ground? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

And what's with the Senate and House not being able to agree on something? It feels like they're speaking different languages or something πŸ˜’. I mean, I get that there are differences in opinion, but can't they compromise a bit?

I'm also worried about the agencies that aren't funded right now... it's going to cause problems for people who need help from those organizations πŸ€•. The VA and Agriculture department are still okay, but others like Defense and Labor are affected.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the end πŸ’―. Will they get their act together or will we have a shutdown that lasts a while? We'll just have to wait and see...

I'm still shaking my head over this whole government shutdown thing 🀯. Can you believe Senate Democrats are still holding out on DHS funding? Like, come on guys, we've got people living in limbo without healthcare or anything πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. The Trump admin's approach to immigration enforcement is already super polarizing, do we really need another crisis like this? πŸ’” I mean, I get it, they're trying to fix the system, but at what cost? 😩 Anyway, fingers crossed that House conservatives come around and this shutdown gets resolved ASAP πŸ™. It's getting old watching our leaders bicker over funding bills instead of solving real problems πŸ’ΈπŸ•’οΈ

πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ I'm getting so frustrated with all this government shutdown drama πŸ™„. As a parent, it's hard to explain to my kids why some people can't agree on how to run the country 🀯. But what really gets me is that the Senate just approved a plan that only extends DHS funding for two weeks, while leaving everything else up in the air 😬. I mean, isn't that like planning a vacation without making any concrete plans? 🌴

And can we talk about how this shutdown affects our kids' future? The Department of Defense is affected, which means it could impact our military's readiness and ability to protect us πŸ’ͺ. And what about the folks who work for the State Department or Labor department? They're going without paychecks because of someone else's politics πŸ€‘.

As a parent, all I want is for my kids to grow up in a country where everyone has access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities 🌟. This government shutdown just makes me feel like we're not making progress on that front πŸ˜”.
