A Japanese cast takes on one of West End's biggest hits in a first-ever production outside the UK.
The global phenomenon "Six", which originally emerged from the Edinburgh fringe in 2017, is now being performed in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya as part of a sold-out tour before returning to London. This latest twist has drawn co-producers Kenny Wax and Andy Barnes and co-creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss who saw Airi Suzuki's performance last year while on holiday in Britain.
Marie Sugaya, the lead singer for Japanese girl band Sonim, was initially unaware of the show until a friend mentioned it during a cultural exchange. However, she has since expressed interest in the role of Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of King Henry VIII whose marriage to him ended in annulment. The musical "queendom" will feature an all-Japanese lineup of queens.
When asked about the message the show conveys, Suziuki stated that it encourages history's often-female narratives and speaks to the power of women telling their stories. However, both actors acknowledged that while historical context would be provided in Japanese, much of the interpretation lies with the audience. For Sugaya, performing "Six" in London is a poignant moment as her friend who initially suggested she join cast will watch the performance live.
The musical has already had its first international run outside Japan last year before it was announced that Tokyo would host the Japanese version. The show appeals to both diehard fans familiar with the original storyline and new audiences. "Six" boasts global streaming numbers of 1.1 billion, second only to another hit 'Hamilton'.
