'We stick two fingers up at Henry VIII': can the riotous all-Japanese Six out-Tudor-queen the original?

A Japanese cast takes on one of West End's biggest hits in a first-ever production outside the UK.

The global phenomenon "Six", which originally emerged from the Edinburgh fringe in 2017, is now being performed in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya as part of a sold-out tour before returning to London. This latest twist has drawn co-producers Kenny Wax and Andy Barnes and co-creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss who saw Airi Suzuki's performance last year while on holiday in Britain.

Marie Sugaya, the lead singer for Japanese girl band Sonim, was initially unaware of the show until a friend mentioned it during a cultural exchange. However, she has since expressed interest in the role of Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of King Henry VIII whose marriage to him ended in annulment. The musical "queendom" will feature an all-Japanese lineup of queens.

When asked about the message the show conveys, Suziuki stated that it encourages history's often-female narratives and speaks to the power of women telling their stories. However, both actors acknowledged that while historical context would be provided in Japanese, much of the interpretation lies with the audience. For Sugaya, performing "Six" in London is a poignant moment as her friend who initially suggested she join cast will watch the performance live.

The musical has already had its first international run outside Japan last year before it was announced that Tokyo would host the Japanese version. The show appeals to both diehard fans familiar with the original storyline and new audiences. "Six" boasts global streaming numbers of 1.1 billion, second only to another hit 'Hamilton'.

πŸ€• just found out that climate change is projected to raise global sea levels by up to 1 meter by 2100 🌊😱 and it's going to affect every single coastline including Japan where this new production of "Six" is happening πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ anyway, looks like Airi Suzuki and Marie Sugaya are getting ready to rock the stage as part of an all-Japanese lineup πŸ˜πŸ‘‘

omg i'm so hyped for this 🀩 - an all-japanese lineup performing one of west end's biggest hits is a total game changer 🎭! but at the same time, it's also kinda wild that they're relying on international fans' interpretation of the historical context since there won't be any direct japanese lessons or explanations πŸ€”... still super excited to see marie sugaya bring anne of cleves to life as queen πŸ‘Έ!

πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I mean, who wouldn't want to see a bunch of Japanese queens slaying their way through history? It's not like it's just another example of cultural appropriation or something πŸ™„. But hey, if Airi Suzuki and Marie Sugaya can pull off the roles, more power to them! πŸ‘‘ The fact that they're doing an all-Japanese lineup is probably a nice touch, but I'm sure some people will still find a way to nitpick about it πŸ˜’.

It's cool that the show conveys a message about women telling their stories and empowering themselves. But let's be real, who needs musical theater when we have history books? πŸ“š Still, if it gets more people interested in learning about historical figures like Anne of Cleves, then I'm all for it! πŸ’‘ Maybe Sugaya's friend will get a good laugh out of watching her perform live in London. That's gotta be worth something, right? πŸ˜‚

OMG I'm so down for this!!! 🀩 A Japanese cast taking on Six in Tokyo is like a dream come true! Remember when Hamilton first came out? It was like the whole world fell in love with it, right? 😍 Well, this latest iteration of Six is gonna bring that same magic to Japan and who knows maybe even more. I mean, can you imagine Marie Sugaya as Anne of Cleves? πŸ€” She's got some serious vocals, if you ask me! The message of the show, encouraging women to tell their stories... it's so relevant today, don't you think? πŸ’β€β™€οΈ And it's awesome that they're featuring an all-Japanese lineup of queens. I'm sure it'll be a wild ride. Have you seen Six before? 🎭

I think this is so cool 🀩! A Japanese cast taking on a West End hit like "Six" in Tokyo & other cities is like a dream come true for musical theatre fans everywhere 🌟. The fact that they're featuring an all-Japanese lineup of queens, including Marie Sugaya from Sonim, is just amazing πŸŽ‰. I'm sure it'll be a huge success with the Japanese audience, who love their pop culture & music 🎡. It's great to see how the show's message about empowering women & telling their stories is resonating with people all over the world πŸ’–. And can you believe that "Six" has already had 1.1 billion streams globally? That's crazy! I'm sure it'll be fun to see the Japanese version live on stage, especially for Sugaya who gets to perform in London after her friend convinces her to join the cast 😊.

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s so cool that a Japanese cast is taking on β€œSix”! 🎭 I mean, who wouldn't want to see an all-Japanese lineup of queens slaying the stage? πŸ˜‚ It's like they're bringing this global phenomenon home and adding their own flavor to it. And can you imagine how awesome it must be for Airi Suzuki to have been a part of the show last year and now she gets to perform it again with a whole new audience? 🀩 The fact that Marie Sugaya is taking on the role of Anne of Cleves, which is such an interesting historical figure, just adds to the excitement. I think it's also really great that the show is encouraging women to tell their stories and bring those narratives back to life – it's like they're making history in their own way! πŸ’–

I'm stoked that "Six" is coming to Japan! πŸŽ‰ It's awesome that they're featuring an all-Japanese lineup of queens, Airi Suzuki and Marie Sugaya, who are talented in their own right. But, I gotta wonder if the cultural context will be handled with care? I mean, we know Japan can be a bit...different when it comes to historical narratives πŸ˜‚. That being said, I'm all for exploring female perspectives and the power of women telling their stories. It's just interesting to see how they'll adapt the show for the Japanese audience, and if they'll get some creative liberties with the historical context. Either way, I hope Sugaya enjoys performing in London – it sounds like a big deal for her! πŸ’–

lol what's up w/ this new production of Six in Japan? I mean idk if an all-japanese cast is gonna be as lit as the original UK one but hey at least they're tryin' right? πŸ€” I love how Airi Suzuki got her break after seeing the show last year, that's some serious talent recognition fam! But for real tho, can't wait to see Marie Sugaya bring Anne of Cleves to life on stage 🎭. Only one thing's for sure - it's gonna be a wild ride trying to interpret historical context in Japanese but hey, that's part of the fun, right? πŸ˜‚

I think this adaptation is a fascinating nod to Japan's vibrant cultural landscape 🌸. By bringing the globally acclaimed musical "Six" to Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, we're witnessing a beautiful blend of Western influence and Eastern sensibilities 🎭. The all-Japanese lineup of queens will undoubtedly infuse a unique energy into the production, allowing Japanese audiences to connect with their own histories and experiences in a fresh way πŸ’–.

Moreover, the show's message about empowering women through storytelling resonates deeply across cultures 🌎. It's intriguing to consider how the audience will interpret historical context within a Japanese framework – it'll be fascinating to observe how local nuances shape their understanding of the narrative πŸ€”. Overall, I'm excited to see this production thrive and share its universal themes with a wider audience worldwide πŸ‘

OMG I just heard about this "Six" thingy being performed in Japan πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅! It's so cool that a Japanese cast is taking on one of the biggest hits in West End history. Reminds me of when I saw Les Mis at school, it was such an epic experience! 😍 The fact that it's now being done with all-Japanese lineup is just amazing, I love how they're bringing this global phenomenon to Tokyo and Osaka 🎟️. And can you believe Marie Sugaya from Sonim got the role of Anne of Cleves? That's like a dream come true for any fan! πŸ’– The message behind "Six" is so powerful too, it's all about women telling their stories and shaping history - I'm getting major feminist vibes here πŸ‘‘.
