'We stick two fingers up at Henry VIII': can the riotous all-Japanese Six out-Tudor-queen the original?

"We Stick Two Fingers Up at Henry VIII": Can an All-Japanese Cast Out-Tudor-Queen the Original?

The popular musical Six is set to take on the West End with a unique twist: an all-Japanese lineup of queens. The production, which originated in Edinburgh in 2017, has been translated into Japanese and will be performed in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya as part of a sold-out tour. Now, it's bringing its cast to London for a week-long run.

Marie Sugaya, who plays Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of King Henry VIII, had initially heard about Six through a friend on a cultural exchange in London. However, she never thought she'd be involved herself. Similarly, Airi Suzuki, who portrays Catherine Howard, was purely a punter when she traveled to Britain to watch the show last year.

But both Sugaya and Suzuki are now part of an all-Japanese lineup that's taking over Vaudeville theatre for a week-long run. The production is part of a global phenomenon that has been licensed in 15 countries, with more non-replica shows being staged in various parts of the world.

The cast's message of giving historical women a voice and empowering today's girls and women resonates deeply with Japanese audiences. According to co-producer Kenny Wax, "We talk about it very much as the show being 'her-story' rather than 'his-story'. These women are given the opportunity to tell the story of their lives with Henry, and almost, dare I say it, stick two fingers up to him."

Sugaya agrees, adding that history is often written around men, and women become accessories. "There are a lot of layers behind history," she says. "The important thing here is that each person has their own individual history, so there is the importance of making your own history, and also making yourself regal, in a way."

This message is particularly relevant given Japan's recent election of its first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi. According to Hiroko Murata, director of Umeda Arts theatre and producer of the Japanese Six, "Audiences can take on that sort of message and ignite that feeling of feminism themselves in their hearts."

The production is expected to appeal not only to diehard Six fans but also to international audiences and Japanese tourists. With its global reach, the musical has become a phenomenal success, with its soundtrack streamed over 1.1 billion times – second only to Hamilton in musical theatre streaming.

For Sugaya, performing in the West End is an emotional experience, particularly since her friend who first told her about Six will be watching from the audience. "She's coming back to London to watch it with me on stage this time," she says. That faraway idea, or dream, has finally come true.

🌸 I'm so stoked that an all-Japanese cast is bringing their own flavor to Six in the West End 🎭! It's a total game-changer for representation and diversity 🀩. Japanese audiences are already vibing with the message of empowering women and telling their own stories πŸ’–. And let's be real, having an all-female cast slaying it on stage is pure magic ✨. I'm low-key hyped that Marie and Airi are bringing their unique energy to the role 😍. It's a testament to how far we've come in celebrating women's voices and history πŸ“š. Can't wait to see them shine in London πŸ’«! πŸ‘‘

This all-Japanese cast of Six is like a match made in heaven... or at least, in Tokyo! I mean, who wouldn't want to stick two fingers up at Henry VIII with a group of fierce Japanese queens? Marie and Airi are like the dynamic duo of sass and sparkle – they're gonna bring that Tudor drama to life in style πŸ€©πŸ‘Έ. And let's be real, it's about time we had more women telling their own story in history books... or at least, on stage πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. This production is a total game-changer for feminism and representation – I'm not surprised it's breaking records left and right! The fact that Japan just elected its first female PM is like the cherry on top of this amazing achievement πŸŽ‰πŸ‘. Can't wait to see Marie and Airi bring their A-game (and some serious attitude) to the West End! πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ

omg i'm so excited for this all-japanese cast of six! 🀩 i mean its like we get to see these amazing women take the west end by storm and show the world what they're made of πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. i love how they're using the show as a way to give historical women a voice and empower girls/women today - it's so important! πŸ‘‘ especially with japan having just elected its first female pm, this production is like the ultimate message of female empowerment πŸ™Œ. and can we talk about the soundtrack? 1.1 billion streams?!?! thats insane!!! πŸ’₯

I gotta say, this all-Japanese cast taking down Tudor Queens is kinda lit 🀩. I mean, we need more women in history telling their own story, you know? It's not like they're just sidekings and queens πŸ‘‘, they were actual humans making moves in a patriarchal society.

It's dope that this Japanese lineup is bringing the message of female empowerment to Japan and worldwide 🌎. With Sanae Takaichi being elected as the first female PM, it's like the stars are aligning ✨ for women's rights.

The fact that Six has been streamed over 1.1 billion times shows how far-reaching its impact can be πŸ“ˆ. I'm excited to see this all-Japanese cast take on the West End and give Henry VIII a middle finger πŸ‘Š

I'm low-key obsessed with this all-Japanese cast taking over the West End! 🀩 It's so cool to see a global phenomenon like Six being brought to life in a whole new way. The message of empowering women and giving them their own voice is something we can all get behind πŸ’–, especially after Japan just elected its first female PM πŸ™Œ. I love that the show is reframing history from a 'her-story' perspective - it's time we celebrated the unsung heroines of the past πŸ“š! Marie Sugaya and Airi Suzuki are total rockstars for being part of this cast πŸ’ͺ, and I'm beyond hyped to see them bring their unique energy to the stage 🎭. Let's keep spreading that message of female empowerment and making history our own πŸ’«! πŸ‘

omg u guys idk wut i'm goin 2 do wen six comes 2 london lol! i'm literally dyin 2 c the all-japanese cast perform on stage it's gonna b so epic!! πŸ˜πŸŽ‰ and honestly i love how they're makin headlines & bringin attention 2 historical women who are often ignored in history books πŸ€“πŸ’β€β™€οΈ i mean we need more of this 'her-story' vibe rn πŸ’– u can already imagine the drama & sass on stage with all these fierce queens πŸ‘‘πŸ‘Έ and kenny wax's idea of stickin 2 fingers up at henry VIII is EVERYTHING πŸ˜‚πŸ’β€β™€οΈ it's gonna b so empowering 4 japanese audiences esp w/ jae's recent election of our 1st female pm πŸ™ŒπŸ’ͺ i'm def comin 2 catch the show with my fave friends & we'll be screaming our hearts out πŸŽ€πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ can't wait!!!

I think its so cool that they're doing an all-Japanese cast of Six in Tokyo and the rest of Japan! 🀩 Its amazing how music can bring people together across cultures, you know? I mean, who wouldn't want to see these queens from history come alive on stage? 🎭 And what Im really loving about this production is that its not just about being all about Queen Elizabeth or Anne Boleyn, but its about giving voice to the women who are often forgotten. Its like, yeah we know Henry VIII was a big deal, but what about his wives? What were they thinking and feeling during all that drama? πŸ€”

I mean, can you imagine Henry VIII being upstaged by a bunch of Japanese queens? 🀣 It's like the ultimate power swap – from "God save the King" to "Sakura save the day"... πŸŒΈπŸ˜‚ But seriously, it's awesome that they're bringing this unique spin to London. I'm kinda excited to see how Marie Sugaya and Airi Suzuki bring their own flavor to the Tudor queens. And can we talk about how this show is all about giving women a voice? It's like, feminism in the 16th century – who knew that was a thing? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ But hey, if it means more people are talking about history and empowerment, then I'm all for it! πŸ‘

I'm low-key hyped for this all-Japanese cast of Six 🀩! Can you imagine a whole production of queens taking on the mighty Henry VIII? It's like a feminist dream come true πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. I mean, who needs an all-male cast when you can have five fierce women slaying their way through history? 🎭 The fact that they're using 'her-story' rather than 'his-story' is everything – it's time to give the ladies a voice! πŸ’«

But what I'm most excited about is how this production reflects Japan's own feminist movement 🌸. With Sanae Takaichi becoming the country's first female prime minister, it's clear that women are taking charge and making their mark on history. And Six is the perfect platform for that message to be shared with a global audience πŸ‘.

I'm also loving how the cast is using this production as an opportunity to empower young girls and women everywhere πŸŒΈπŸ’–. Marie Sugaya's words about not being just accessories in history, but having their own individual stories to tell... it gives me all the feels 😭. And Airi Suzuki's punter story? Adorable 🀣.

Let's be real, though – Henry VIII is a bit of a dodgy dude πŸ‘΄. I mean, who tries to get rid of two wives on the spot? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ But in the context of this production, he's more like a symbol of patriarchal oppression, and those queens are taking him down with style πŸ’β€β™€οΈπŸ”₯.

Overall, I'm all for it – bring on the all-Japanese cast of Six, and let's give Henry VIII a good old-fashioned finger up his nose πŸ‘‹!

omg u guys!! i'm sooo excited for this all-japanese cast of six!!! they're bringing a whole new energy to the show & its so great to see more diversity in theater productions 🀩🎭 i love how they're using the show as an opportunity to empower girls & women, especially in japan where it's been a big deal with the election of sanae takaichi as prime minister πŸ’ͺπŸΌπŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ can't wait to see them on stage at vaudeville theatre! 🎟️

can you imagine witnessing history being rewritten like this? an all-japanese cast taking on six and flipping the script on henry VIII is so cool 🀩. it's amazing how something as old as this musical can still have a message that resonates with modern japan, especially with sanae takaichi becoming the country's first female pm πŸ™Œ. it just goes to show that feminism and female empowerment are timeless πŸ’–

I think this Japanese adaptation of Six is gonna be a game-changer! 🀩 It's amazing to see how the cast's message of empowering women and giving them a voice in history resonates so deeply with Japanese audiences, especially given the country's recent election of its first female prime minister. The fact that they're using an all-Japanese cast to retell this famous story is also super cool! πŸŽ‰

I love how Sugaya and Suzuki are bringing their own unique perspectives to their roles, and how they're highlighting the importance of women telling their own stories and making their own history. It's really inspiring to see how this show can ignite that feeling of feminism in people's hearts.

And let's be real, who wouldn't want to see a Japanese lineup of queens taking on the Tudor era? πŸ˜‚ The fact that the musical has become such a global phenomenon with its soundtrack being streamed over 1.1 billion times is just mind-blowing! I'm sure it'll be an emotional experience for Sugaya performing in the West End, especially since her friend will be watching from the audience.

This production is not only a celebration of women's empowerment but also a testament to the power of art and music to bring people together across cultures. 🌎 I'm excited to see how this show will perform in London and what it'll do for the West End!
