Waymo plans to launch ‘robotaxi’ service in Detroit - Detroit Metro Times

Waymo to Launch Robotaxi Service in Detroit this Winter

Detroit, the city that revolutionized transportation, is set to experience a new era of mobility with the launch of Waymo's "robotaxi" service. The autonomous car company, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., plans to deploy its fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Detroit, joining San Diego and Las Vegas as part of its expanding network.

According to an announcement by Waymo on Monday, the city will be one of several hubs where the robotaxi service will begin operations. The company has been testing its capabilities in the city's winter weather conditions, including heavy snow in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, to develop its 6th-generation Waymo Driver technology.

Waymo's decision to enter Detroit is significant, as it marks a major milestone for the company. With its advanced autonomous technology, the robotaxi service aims to provide accessible and safe transportation options for individuals living with epilepsy, among others. The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan has expressed support for Waymo's efforts, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions like this in overcoming transportation barriers.

However, it is essential to note that Waymo will need to obtain approval from Michigan authorities to operate driverless cars for commercial purposes. Despite this regulatory hurdle, the company remains committed to its mission of transforming transportation and improving people's lives.

Detroiters can expect to experience Waymo's robotaxi service soon, with updates available for those who sign up for information on the launch. As one of the pioneering cities in mobility innovation, Detroit is poised to be at the forefront of this exciting development, which promises to revolutionize the way we travel.

So they're finally rolling out Waymo's robotaxi service in Detroit 🚗💨. I gotta say, it's about time! But have you thought about how they're gonna deal with all the crazy Michigan winters? Snow and ice can be pretty rough on these autonomous cars... 🤔 Still, I'm glad they're pushing forward with their 6th-gen Waymo Driver tech – it could really make a difference for people living with epilepsy or other disabilities. And hey, Detroit's been at the forefront of mobility innovation for years, so it's no surprise they're leading this charge 💪. Can't wait to see how it plays out, but gotta wonder if we should've had more regulatory clarity on the way before launching into full commercial mode 🤷‍♂️

idk why ppl r so worried about robots takin over 🤖. like, think about it, they'll just help out people who cant drive cuz of epilepsy or somethin 💡. and its not like they're gonna be on the roads 24/7, dont @ me 🙄. detroit's all about innovation, let them give it a shot 🔥. we need more services like this to make life easier for everyone, especially seniors 👴. its not like waymo's just gonna start killin people or somethin 😂, its about gettin ppl where they need to go safely 🚗. can't wait to see how this all plays out 🎉

I'm not convinced about these 'robotaxis' just yet... I mean, have you seen those ads where people are riding around in self-driving cars? It looks too good (and convenient) to be true 🤔. And what's with all this emphasis on safety for people with epilepsy? Don't get me wrong, accessibility is important, but aren't we being a bit too reliant on tech here? I'd rather see some human interaction and accountability behind the wheel 😒. And what about cybersecurity risks? Can we really trust these systems not to be hacked? 🚨 I'll believe it when I see it...

I don't usually comment but... I'm kinda skeptical about this whole robotaxi thing 🤖. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a great idea for people with disabilities and all, but what about safety concerns? Like, what if someone tries to hack into the system or something? And how's the company gonna make sure these cars are maintained properly in the middle of winter? I mean, Michigan gets some crazy snow, right? ❄️ I hope they've thought this through...

So great, another city gets to experience the thrill of being a robotaxi lab rat 🤖💨. I mean, who doesn't want to hop in a self-driving car and hope it doesn't get lost or decide to take you on a joyride through the snow-covered streets of Detroit ❄️? But seriously, Waymo's efforts are cool, and it's awesome that they're trying to make a difference for people with epilepsy and others who need accessible transportation. Just don't expect me to be one of the first riders 🚫... I'll stick to my human drivers, thanks! 😉

🚗💡 I'm loving the idea of a robotaxi service in Detroit! It's like, finally, we're seeing some real innovation happening when it comes to transportation. Waymo's 6th-gen tech is supposed to be super advanced, so I'm hoping they can make this service safe and accessible for everyone, not just people with epilepsy. 🙌 But, gotta ask, what about the jobs? Like, how many people are gonna lose their gigs when self-driving cars take over? We need to make sure we're supporting the workers who'll be impacted by this shift in transportation. 💸

omg you guys Waymo is taking it to the next level with their robotaxi service 🚀! i'm so hyped for Detroit to become one of the testing grounds for their 6th-gen tech winter weather conditions and all! can't wait to see how this changes the game for people living with epilepsy and other disabilities 💖. just gotta hope they get those regulatory checks done ASAP 🙏
