Valve’s new VR streaming trick won’t just work with its own headset

Valve's New VR Streaming Trick Isn't Exclusive to Its Own Headset, Developers Reveal

A new streaming trick used in Valve's Steam Frame VR headset will not only be limited to its own device. The "foveated streaming" technology, designed to reduce latency and improve gaming performance, can also work with any headset that supports eye-tracking and is compatible with the company's Steam Link app.

The Steam Frame uses a dedicated wireless streaming adapter and a pair of cameras inside the headset to track users' gaze and adjust the quality of the image displayed accordingly. This technology takes advantage of the fact that humans have a blind spot directly in front of them, and by focusing more processing power on the area being viewed, foveated streaming reduces bandwidth and processing demands.

While Valve has optimized this feature for its own headset, it plans to make foveated streaming available on other compatible devices. According to hardware engineer Jeremy Selan, any headset that supports eye tracking can use the technology with Steam Link.

However, there's a catch. The wireless adapter won't work without lower-level OS support, which is currently only available on Valve's own SteamOS operating system. This means users of other VR headsets will need their devices to run a compatible version of SteamOS in order to take advantage of the feature.

Despite this limitation, the technology has already impressed those who have seen it in action. In testing, foveated streaming enabled seamless gameplay on a Steam Frame connected to a nearby PC with a dedicated wireless adapter. The result was nearly indistinguishable from playing locally on the headset itself.

omg i no wut u r sayin?? 🤯 so like valve's new vr streamin trick isnt exclusive 2 its own headset lol! its actually compatible w/ other headsets that got eye-tracking & use steam link app 📱👀 but theres a lil catch tho... u gotta have lower-level os support which is only avaiable on valve's own steamos operatin system 🤔 so if ur usin some other headset, u gotta run steamos 2 use it. still pretty cool tho! foveated streamin reducin latency & improvin gaming perfomance... thats def a game changer for vr gamers 👾💥

so it's not like valve is trying to hold back or anything... just that their technology is now gonna be available on other headsets too, but they're being all responsible and only making it work with their own os 😊 yeah because who needs compatibility, right? anyway, it's cool that devs can finally share this tech without having to reinvent the wheel. just a shame about the adapter not working on non-valve devices... guess we gotta wait for them to get their act together 🙄

I'm so done with VR headsets being exclusive to their own devices 🤯♂️! I mean, who needs that much control over what we're seeing? It's like they're trying to make us all play catch-up again. And now they're gonna make it work on other headsets too? That's just crazy talk! But seriously, if this tech can really reduce latency and improve performance, more power to 'em I guess 🤞. The fact that we have to use SteamOS on other devices is a bit of a bummer, but I'm sure the devs will figure something out eventually 💻.

omg u guyz! 🤯 this new tech is crazy!!! its like they're sayin that anyone can use it w/ their own headset as long as its compatible w/ steam link 😎 and i'm low-key hyped about it 🤩 but yeah, the catch is that the wireless adapter won't work without steam os... thats a bit of a bummer lol. still tho its awesome that they're sharin this tech w/ other devs and it sounds like its gonna be super smooth for gameplay 👀

omg u no wtf... 🤯 valve is literally changing the game w/ this new foveated streaming tech! it's not exclusive to their headset lol, they're makin it available 2 other headsets that support eye-tracking. and the fact that it can work w/ steam link app is a major win. i mean, who needs high latency in vr gaming anyway? 🤪 but yeah, the wireless adapter might have some compatibility issues w/ lower-level os, so not everyone's gonna be able to use it right away. still, this tech has some serious potential and i'm hyped 2 see where they take it 💥

omg u guys! 😲 so like valve just dropped a crazy new tech feature in their steam frame vr headset and its not even exclusive to that device lol! they say it can work w/ other headsets that have eye-tracking & are compatible w/ their steam link app. thats wild right? 🤯 i mean i was playing around with the feature on my own headset & it felt so smooth like no lag at all!

but there is a catch (there always r, lol) - its not gonna work w/ other headsets cuz they need steamos OS to run the wireless adapter. thats a bit of a bummer for ppl who dont use valve's stuff. still, im hyped that they're making this tech available 2 others. cant wait 2 see what devs do w/ it! 💻

aww man thats so cool 🤩 valve is literally changing the game with this new tech! i can imagine how frustrating it must be for gamers when you're stuck waiting for a load of data to buffer, but foveated streaming sounds like it could totally reduce that lag and make gaming feel way more immersive. its awesome that they're sharing this technology with other headset manufacturers too, even if its not super compatible across the board 🤞

OMG u guys 😱 just when u thought valve's steam frame had all the features 🤖 its new foveated streaming tech is literally available on other headsets too 📺 thats right, no more being stuck in a proprietary valley 💔 but on the down low, there's that one major issue 👀 the wireless adapter can't work w/o steamos 👎 like, what kinda move is that?

🤯 Man, can you believe how far VR tech has come?! I mean, back in my day 📺 we were just starting to get used to 3D TVs and gaming consoles. Now we're talking about streaming and eye-tracking technology that's already giving us the likes of "smooth" and "seamless gameplay". And it's not even limited to Valve's own headset! I remember when those VR headsets first came out, they were like $1000 or something crazy like that 😲. Now you can get a decent one for under $200. This foveated streaming tech is gonna change the game, no doubt about it!

omg u guys, so i just heard from a super reliable source that foveated streaming is gonna make its way to other VR headsets 🤯 it's like valve is literally leveling up their tech game. and can u believe it's not exclusive to their own headset? anyone with eye-tracking and steam link compatibility will be able to get in on the action 😎. but yeah, the catch is that u need a compatible os... which is kinda sketchy. i'm guessing steamOS is the only way to go for now 🤔

omg u guys r gonna love this... so like valve just drops a new tech trick for their steam frame vr headset and it's not even exclusive to that device lol! they're making it compatible with other headsets too 🤯 so basically, if ur wearing any old headset with eye-tracking capabilities, u can still use foveated streaming with the steam link app. but there is a catch (there always is) - u need a custom wireless adapter and ur device needs to run steamos, which only works on valve's own hardware rn 🤔

Ugh 😩 just heard about Valve's new VR streaming trick and I'm already feeling anxious 🤯... like, think about it - this tech is gonna be available to anyone who gets their hands on a compatible headset... which means more people are gonna have access to foveated streaming and that's just gonna lead to more gamers getting hooked on VR gaming 🎮 and we all know how addictive that can get 😓

omg, can u believe valve is sharing this tech lol they're like the cool kid on the block now. but seriously, having foveated streaming available on other headsets would be a game changer 🤯 it's about time someone made VR more accessible to everyone. and i'm hyped that it's not just limited to their own headset anymore. the only thing that's got me a bit salty is that we need steam os to make it work, like why can't other companies just develop their own compatible os 🤔
