Val's Lesbian Bar to open in Queen Village this spring

Val's Lesbian Bar Set to Open in Queen Village Spring 2024, Filling Void Left by Toasted Walnut Closure

After two years of planning and fundraising, Val's Lesbian Bar is finally set to open its doors in Queen Village this spring. The new venue, located at 605 S. Third St., will be the sole lesbian bar in Philadelphia, a gap left vacant since the closure of the Toasted Walnut nearly five years ago.

Val's owners Julia Harris and Clover Gilfor have been working tirelessly to bring their vision to life, hosting several fundraisers to meet their goal. The couple has secured a lease and is now poised to begin operations with $15,000 in crowdfunding, which will cover most of their first month of rent and security deposit.

"This is an important chunk," Harris and Gilfor wrote on Instagram. "Val's is opening because of you."

The bar takes over the space from Reef Restaurant & Lounge, a Caribbean restaurant that has been at the location for 22 years. In a heartfelt statement, the staff at Reef expressed their gratitude to customers, saying they will "close our doors with full hearts and deep gratitude" as they move on.

Val's is part of a growing trend in cities across the US to bring back lesbian bars, with only 36 operating nationwide. The venue will be a beacon for the LGBTQ+ community in Pennsylvania, filling a gap left vacant since the closure of the Toasted Walnut.

For those involved in the fundraising process, it's clear that Val's is more than just a bar - it's a symbol of community and resilience. As one supporter noted, "The costs of starting a new bar are huge... this is an important chunk." For Harris and Gilfor, the support has been invaluable, saying "Val's is opening because of you."

With its unique blend of community, creativity, and inclusivity, Val's Lesbian Bar is set to become a staple in Queen Village.

omg yaaas finally some good news for the philly queer scene 🌈! I'm so down on val's lesbian bar taking over that spot in queen village it's been too long since we've had a proper lesbian bar in phila, and honestly toasty walnut was kinda a loss when it closed, but this is like a dream come true. $15k from crowdfunding is huge, i mean who doesn't love a good crowd fund, and these chicks julia and clover are low key heroes for making this happen. the vibe they're going for sounds super inclusive and community-focused, which is exactly what we need more of in phila. can't wait to see this place come together and become that safe space everyone's been searching for πŸ€—

omg i'm so hyped about this new lesbian bar opening up in philly!!! πŸŽ‰πŸ’– finally we have a place that feels like home for our lgbtq+ community 😊 it's crazy how many bars just closed down and now val's is stepping in to fill that void πŸ’ͺ and the fact that they're being super transparent about their fundraising process and thanking everyone who supported them πŸ™ it shows that they value their customers' love and support πŸ’• can't wait to go there and celebrate with my friends! πŸ₯³πŸΉ

I'm super stoked that this new bar is going to be all about catering to the straight crowd lol, i mean, who needs a whole lesbian bar in Philly? I know some people are hyped about it filling a gap left by Toasted Walnut's closure, but let's be real, it's just another example of people wanting to create spaces for themselves... meanwhile, what about all the other communities that need representation too?

I'm so hyped for this new bar to open up in Philly! It's like, finally someone's giving the lesbian community some love and space to be themselves in the city πŸ»πŸ’–. I mean, two years of planning and fundraising is a lot of work, but it'll all be worth it when people can go to Val's and just be themselves without judgment. The fact that it's filling a gap left by Toasted Walnut closure is like, a huge deal for the community too. We need more spaces like this where we can express ourselves freely and not feel like we're walking on eggshells all the time 🌈πŸ’ͺ. And can I just say, I love how Julia and Clover are thanking everyone who's supported them through Instagram? It's like, so sweet and humble at the same time πŸ’•.

I'm so stoked to see Val's coming to life 🀩🍹. It's about time Philly had a safe space for the lesbian community to hang out, socialize, and just be themselves. Two years of planning and fundraising is no joke, so props to Julia and Clover for staying committed to their vision πŸ’ͺ. Now, let's get this bar open and make Queen Village proud πŸŽ‰!

🀩 I'm hyped for this new bar to open up! It's about time we had a place where the lesbian community could gather without having to travel all over the city. The fact that it's been two years of planning and fundraising is crazy, but totally worth it. 36 lesbian bars nationwide? That's like, super rare! I'm definitely going to check this place out when it opens in spring 2024 πŸŽ‰

It's been way too long since we lost Toasted Walnut, and I was starting to think we'd never see another space like it again πŸ€•. But these two ladies, Julia and Clover, have put in the work, and it shows - they've got a real community vibe going on. And 15k from crowdfunding? That's just amazing πŸ’Έ. I remember when Toasted Walnut first opened, it was like a breath of fresh air for the LGBTQ+ community in Philly. Now, with Val's opening up, I'm excited to see what they'll bring to the table πŸΉπŸ’–.

I know there's been a lot of focus on bringing back lesbian bars, but let's be real, it's not just about the bars themselves – it's about the community that comes with them πŸ’•. Val's has already got some amazing people behind it who are passionate about creating an inclusive space for everyone. I'm definitely going to have to check it out when it opens! πŸ‘€
