omg u gotta read this just got word that the UN SC approved a resolution supporting morocco's claim to western sahara i know algeria is all about the polisario front wanting a referendum on self-determination but like, 11 countries voted in favor including the US which is wild
anyway the thing is morocco is stoked and thinks this will help build momentum for peace but the algrian amb was like "hold up" saying the resolution doesn't address the sahrawi people's aspirations and that genuine autonomy under moroccan sovereignty ain't gonna cut it
demonstrations in saharawi refugee camps are getting wild too protesters are all about self-determination but like, how do we even get to that point
I'm not sure if this is the right move by the UN Security Council... Morocco's claim to Western Sahara has always been a bit suspect in my eyes. The fact that Algeria is opposed to it but can't stop the vote is kinda suspicious. The US backing this plan might have helped, but at what cost? It feels like they're playing with fire and I'm worried about the Sahrawi people's rights being trampled on. Renewing the UN peacekeeping mission for another year just means more uncertainty and more protests in those refugee camps... it's a sad reality that we're still stuck in this conflict over 40 years later.
this is a weird time for africa i feel like we're getting closer to a solution but also further away from it at the same time morocco's claim is getting more support but what about the people living there? shouldn't they have a say in their own future? i wish they'd put more emphasis on self-determination in that resolution maybe then we can talk about building momentum for peace instead of just strengthening one side's claim
I think it's kinda weird that the UN Security Council approved this resolution without mentioning a referendum on self-determination. Like, isn't that what everyone's been saying needs to happen? The Polisario Front and their allies have been pushing for this for ages, and now Morocco gets to just ignore them? It's not like they're gonna get what they want with 11 countries voting in favor of Morocco's plan. And what about the Sahrawi people, tho? They deserve a say in their own future too! I'm also kinda surprised that Algeria wasn't stronger in its opposition to this resolution. Like, don't they care about the Sahrawi people's rights?
