Two dead and six missing after landslides hit house and campground in New Zealand

A Devastating Landslide Strikes New Zealand, Leaving Two Dead and Six Missing

Heavy rains had battered the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island just days before the catastrophic event that would shake the nation to its core. A series of landslides ripped through a house in Welcome Bay on Thursday morning, claiming two lives and leaving several others trapped beneath the rubble.

As emergency services scrambled to respond, police confirmed that another landslide had struck at Beachside Holiday Park near Mount Maunganui, also in the North Island. The resulting debris field was so extensive that recreational vehicles and at least one structure were crushed, leaving families who had gathered for a summer holiday in shock.

Among the missing is a 16-year-old boy and his 14-year-old sister, believed to have been trapped beneath the landslide. Police are working tirelessly to locate them, with search efforts underway late into the night on Thursday. The area remains unstable, making it difficult for rescue teams to access the site without risking further collapse.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed his condolences to the families of those affected by saying "New Zealand is full of grief today... and grieves with them." The Chinese ambassador to New Zealand also paid tribute to a Chinese citizen who lost their life in the disaster, stating that "our hearts are with the impacted families at this difficult moment."

While some have questioned why people were not evacuated after reports of a landslip at the campsite earlier in the day, officials have vowed to get to the bottom of what went wrong. Local authorities are working closely with emergency services to piece together what happened and ensure that those affected receive the support they need.

One Australian tourist who was staying at the campsite described hearing the landslide and then seeing a massive wall of debris hurtling towards him. "It was like the scariest thing I've ever experienced in my life," he said, still shaken by the event.

As the full extent of the disaster becomes clear, New Zealand is coming to terms with its grief. The country has been hit hard by severe weather events in recent days, and the latest tragedy has left many wondering how such a devastating incident could have occurred.

OMG 😱, I'm literally shaking thinking about what happened there! 2 lives lost already? 🤕 And those 6 missing... it's like, how can one day just go from being sunny to having landslides and destruction everywhere? 🌴🌀 Like, the weather warnings must have been clear, but did people not take them seriously enough? 🤔 Was there something that went wrong with evacuation plans? I don't get why ppl are asking those questions... shouldn't they be thinking about the families of the victims first? 🙏 It's all just so sad and confusing at the same time 😔.

🤔 I'm totally convinced that this landslide was preventable if the authorities had taken more measures to secure the campsite 🚧. But at the same time, I don't think the tourists were in any way negligent or reckless... I mean, they were just trying to enjoy their holiday, right? 😬 And what's with all these questions about why people weren't evacuated sooner? It's not like the authorities didn't have enough resources to deal with it 🤦‍♂️. And on the other hand, maybe they did do everything they could and it was just one of those tragic accidents that can happen anywhere... ugh, I'm so torn about this! 😩

🌊😱 I'm still trying to process this... just had a look at satellite imagery of the landslide area and it's clear that heavy rain was the main culprit! 📈 The data shows that rainfall in Welcome Bay increased by over 500% in the 24 hours leading up to the disaster 🌡️. It's no wonder the ground couldn't hold on for dear life.

I've also been looking at the campsite's layout and it looks like they had some serious warnings signs up about erosion risks 🚨. Not sure what went wrong with evacuations but clearly more could have been done to prevent this tragedy. 🤔

The Chinese ambassador mentioning a national moment of mourning is a great idea - we need to come together as a country to support those affected 💕. And did you see the PM's condolences? He's absolutely right, New Zealand is indeed feeling this one hard 😔.

Stats-wise, according to NZ Transport Agency data, the number of landslides in the country has increased by 23% over the past 5 years 📊. It's clear we need better preparedness and emergency response measures in place for such events. We can't just rely on luck and natural disaster preparedness! 🌴

.. this is like something outta Lord of the Rings, you know? 🌪️ Two people dead already and six missing? It's crazy that these landslides just kept coming! I'm so worried about those kids still trapped under the rubble, my heart's breaking for them. 🤕 I wonder how they could've missed the warning signs and evacuated everyone, it's a really bad question to have. But at least the PM is being all supportive and stuff, that's good. 🙏 And poor Australia tourist, dude, that was seriously intense! 😲

Omg can't believe what's happening in NZ 🤕😱 landslide is just so intense... two lives lost already? praying for those six missing fams to be found safe 💔🙏 thinking about all the ppl who were on that campsite & now they're traumatized 4eva 😩 hope the gov & emergency services can get to the bottom of this & make sure no1 else has to go thru this 🌟💖

💔😱 Can you even imagine going on a family holiday only to be caught up in a landslide that's just... devastating 🌪️? The thought of those two young teens still missing, trapped beneath all that rubble, is just heartbreaking 😭. And for the Aussie tourist who witnessed it all, I'm sure he'll never forget this terrorizing moment either 😨.

I mean, we can second-guess what could've been done differently now, but let's be real, Mother Nature's got her own way of doing things 🌎. The important thing is that our thoughts are with the families affected and the rescue teams working tirelessly to bring those missing home safely 💕.

I'm like totally shocked that people are saying we shoulda evacuated the campsite earlier 🤯. I mean, yeah, maybe they should've taken precautions but to say it was a total failure of emergency services is just not fair 🙅‍♂️. I think it's way too easy to point fingers when you're not even on the ground, you know? 😒 The fact that people are trapped and need help ASAP is what matters most, not whether or not they shoulda taken a different route to the beach 🏖️. Can we just focus on finding those missing kids instead of arguing about who's at fault? 🤝

omg, this is so sad 🤕 i was watching the news and saw that two ppl were already dead and six more are missing... it's like something out of a movie, you know? 😱 they say heavy rains had been battering new zealand just days before this happened, but i guess even with all those warnings, ppl still got caught off guard 🤦‍♀️ i feel bad for the families who lost loved ones and are still trying to find their missing kids... it's like my heart is hurting for them 💔

OMG, 😱 two lives lost already & six people missing... what's going on?! 🤯 How can something like this happen?! The poor families who were supposed to be having a nice holiday are now in shock & trauma... my heart goes out to them 💔. I mean, heavy rains did batter the area but that doesn't excuse the landslides not being evacuated when there were reports of a landslide earlier... 🤷‍♀️ was it an oversight or what?! 🤔 Prime Minister Luxon's condolences mean everything, though 😊. But seriously, how can we make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again?! 🚨👮‍♂️

😱 just when u thought nz was done with bad weather, another landslide hits 🌪️ two dead & six missing, why weren't they evacuated?! 🤔 search efforts still on late at night, unstable terrain making it hard to get in safely 💔

I'm tellin' ya, this landslide thingy looks like more than just bad luck 🤔. I mean, the timing of it all is super suspicious... heavy rains just days before? That's like the ultimate setup for disaster, if you ask me 😬. And what's with the police and authorities actin' so fast to cover it up? They're too quick to shift the blame from themselves to others 🙄. I'm thinkin' there might be more to this than meets the eye... perhaps some sorta hidden agenda or somethin' 💡. Those officials are just makin' excuses, if you ask me... we should be lookin' into how this could've been prevented, not just throwin' out blame 🤷‍♂️.

😩 omg i cant even right now... two people dead and six missing 😭 like what happened to that family at welcome bay? how did they not evacuate them? 🤯 was it a natural disaster or just bad planning? 🌎 my heart goes out to the chinese citizen who lost their life too, sorry china 😔 i wish we could know what went wrong with the emergency services so we can learn from this and prevent more tragedies like this from happening in future 💔

🤦‍♀️ can't believe it's happening again 🌪️. I mean, who needs a travel brochure when you've got landslides 🤯? Welcome Bay, huh? Sounds like the kind of place where you'd want to take your family on a relaxing vacation... not 🙅‍♂️. And what's with the "grieves with them" thing from the PM? Sounds like someone needs a refresher course on how to do condolences 😒.

😱 this is getting crazy 🤯 landslides are one thing but what about those people trapped underneath? it's like they're living in a nightmare 😴 and to make things worse, they're stuck because the area is still unstable 🌀 like, can't we just evacuate them already? 🚫 and I'm so sorry for the families of the two people who lost their lives 💔😢 it's just too much grief for one day 🤕

😔 Just heard about this devastating landslide in Welcome Bay & Beachside Holiday Park. Still can't believe 2 lives are lost & so many more missing. 😢 The thought of that 16-yr-old boy and his sister trapped beneath the rubble is keeping me up at night 🤯. It's heartbreaking that families were there for a summer holiday, only to experience this horror. I hope rescue teams can find those missing kids safely 🙏. This tragedy just goes to show how powerful nature can be 😓. Thoughts are with everyone affected & their loved ones 💕.

💔😱 This is just heartbreaking. The North Island's weather forecast had been warning of heavy rains for days and now look at what's happened... two lives lost already? 🌪️ And six more people trapped or missing... I can only imagine the families' fear. It's like, how can this happen in a place that's supposed to be beautiful and safe? The conditions must have been perfect for landslides to occur, yet the warnings were probably ignored... poor planning, poor communication... 🤦‍♂️

😱 this is so sad what kind of weather do they usually get in new zealand? 🌪️ heavy rains should be expected but not to that extent... also why wasn't evacuation done earlier? 🤔 emergency services are doing their best but it's clear that things could have been handled differently from the start. 😕 can only hope those missing are found safe and sound 👍

🤕😞 this is so tragic... those poor families who lost their loved ones 🙏💔 the fact that 6 people are still missing is just heartbreaking 😓 my heart goes out to everyone affected by this landslide, especially the Aussie tourist who was there and had to witness such horror 🌴😨
