‘The New Big 5’: Wildlife photography book turns the lens on animals at risk | CNN

"A Global Call to Action: Wildlife Photographer Reveals the New Big Five"

In a groundbreaking project, British photographer Graeme Green has taken on the iconic term "Big Five" traditionally used in Africa's trophy hunting culture and reimagined it as a global movement to highlight endangered wildlife. The "New Big Five" includes elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger – all of which are threatened with extinction.

Green's vision is to use photography to inspire people to take action against the alarming rate at which nature is declining. With the help of 144 renowned wildlife photographers from around the world, he has curated a stunning book featuring breathtaking images of these animals in their natural habitats.

The project was born out of Green's desire to encourage people to "shoot with a camera, not a gun." He wanted to shift the focus from hunting to conservation and raise awareness about the urgent need to protect wildlife. The book serves as both a reminder of what we stand to lose and a call to action for potential solutions.

The "New Big Five" are ambassadors for the natural world, highlighting the devastating impact of human activities such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change on endangered species. The book also explores the benefits of rewilding and the importance of indigenous communities in conservation efforts.

Green notes that his photography project is not just about showcasing beautiful images but also conveying the severity of the situation. He says, "That's only the tip of the iceberg – I could have included thousands of pictures because that's how serious the situation is."

The book features essays from prominent conservationists and activists, including Jane Goodall, who praises the project as a powerful tool for inspiring people to take action. "We have a window of time during which we can start to heal some of the harm we have inflicted on the natural world, but only if we get together and take action now."

"The New Big Five: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" is now available in bookstores worldwide, offering readers a glimpse into the world of these majestic creatures and a chance to join the global movement to protect them.

🤔 I mean, I think it's awesome that someone's trying to shift the focus from hunting to conservation... but at the same time, isn't this just gonna make people feel guilty for not being able to afford a safari or something? 🤑 Like, are we really supposed to start buying these books and posters and feeling good about ourselves just because we're helping out? Or is it actually making a difference?

And what's with the "New Big Five" thing? Is this just trying to rebrand the old idea of trophy hunting as... conservation-ish? 🐯 I mean, I love animals too, but let's be real here – some of these species have been endangered for centuries. Can't we just focus on preserving their habitats and all that? Don't need a fancy new term or book to do it.

I guess what I'm saying is... I don't know if this project is really gonna make a dent in the problem 🤷‍♂️. But hey, maybe it'll inspire some people to care more about wildlife, right? 😊

🤔 so i'm reading this about graeme green's project "new big five" supposed to raise awareness about endangered wildlife but i'm having trouble understanding why we need another term for the original "big five"? like, what's wrong with just saying "endangered animals" instead of trying to rebrand it? and also, 144 renowned photographers is a pretty big claim, where are these people from? are they even involved in conservation efforts? 📸👀

I'm so down with this project!!! 🙌 It's amazing how one person can make a difference by using his camera as a tool for change. I mean, who doesn't love wildlife pics anyway? 😊 But seriously, it's like we need a wake-up call to start taking care of our planet and its creatures. I'm so glad Jane Goodall is on board with this project, she's like a legend in the conservation world! 🙌 The fact that it's not just about pretty pictures but also raising awareness about the real issues facing wildlife is what makes it even more powerful. We need to start taking action now and make some noise about protecting our planet's precious wildlife before it's too late 😱

omg u guys i cant even lol imagine if we lost all these iconic animals whats next?? like, i know conservation is key but come on we gotta do better than just taking pictures 📸🌳 what if we actually put our money where our mouths are? like, invest in rewilding programs and stuff instead of just talking about it all day 🤑

🌳📸 this is so needed, we need people like graeme green using their talents to raise awareness about wildlife conservation, it's not just about taking pictures of animals it's about inspiring change, I'm really hyped that jane goodall is backing this project and i hope the book inspires more people to take action against extinction, we can't keep losing species at this rate 💔

OMG you guys! 🤯 I'm totally obsessed with this new project by Graeme Green - it's like, taking back the term "Big Five" from that trophy hunting culture and flipping it on its head to be all about conservation and wildlife preservation 🌟! I love how he's using photography as a way to inspire people to take action against extinction and pollution. The images are literally breathtaking and I'm not even kidding when I say it's giving me all the feels 😊. And can we talk about Jane Goodall for a sec? 🙌 She's like, a total legend and I'm so here for her praise on this project! We really do have a chance to make a difference if we all come together to protect our planet's wildlife. The book is literally a must-read, trust me 📚.

I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEW PROJECT!!! 🌟🐾 IT'S AMAZING HOW ONE PHOTOGRAPHER CAN MAKE SUCH A BIG IMPACT WITH HIS WORK. I MEAN, WHO WOULDN'T BE INSPIRED BY THE BEAUTIFUL PICS OF THESE ANIMALS IN THEIR NATURAL HABITATS?! 🌴

I THINK IT'S SO COOL THAT GRAEME GREEN IS TRYING TO SHIFT OUR FOCUS FROM HUNTING TO CONSERVATION. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE HIM WHO ARE WILLING TO TAKE A STAND AND MAKE A CHANGE. 💪

AND I LOVCE HOW HE'S GATHERED 144 OTHER WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO HELP HIM WITH THIS PROJECT. IT JUST SHOWS US THAT THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO CARE ABOUT THESE ISSUES AND WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THEM.

I'VE ALREADY ORDERED MY COPY OF THE BOOK AND I CANT WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON IT!

omg this is so amazing 🤩 graeme green's project is literally changing everything! i love how he turned something negative (trophying) into something positive (conservation). the pics are insane btw can't wait to get my hands on that book and start learning more about these incredible creatures 🌟

🌎 I think its kinda cool that someone's trying to shift our focus from hunting to conservation with this project but at the same time I'm like, what's the point if we're not gonna make any real changes? 🤔 The fact that these animals are still endangered after all these years is just crazy and it feels like were just kicking the can down the road. 💸 We need to see some serious commitment from governments and corporations before we can say we're really making a difference. But hey, every bit counts right? Maybe this project will be the spark that ignites something bigger 🎯

🌟 I think this project by Graeme Green is super inspiring! 🤩 The idea of redefining "Big Five" as a call for conservation rather than hunting is pure genius. It's amazing how one photographer can make such a huge impact with his work and get so many other talented photographers on board to create something incredible.

I love that the book isn't just about showing off pretty pictures, but also tries to convey the severity of the situation we're in – climate change, habitat loss, pollution... it's all super serious stuff 🌎💔. The fact that Jane Goodall is supporting this project makes me even more excited to check out the book!

What I think is even better than the actual photos is the message behind them – we can make a difference by taking action now and working together as a global community. We just have to spread awareness, support conservation efforts, and be kind to our planet 🌿💚. It's not too late to change things, but it's definitely up to us!
