The four astronauts NASA picked for the first crewed moon mission in 50 years | CNN

NASA has announced the four astronauts who will helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades, Artemis II. The quartet includes Reid Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot; Victor Glover, a 46-year-old naval aviator with experience on the International Space Station; Christina Koch, a veteran of six spacewalks and the record holder for the longest single spaceflight by a woman; and Jeremy Hansen, a Canadian astronaut who will become the first Canadian to travel to deep space.

Wiseman, 47, is set to serve as commander of the Artemis II mission. He has previously flown on the International Space Station and served as chief of the astronaut office before stepping down in November 2022. His extensive experience and leadership skills make him an ideal candidate for this historic mission.

Glover, also 46, was part of the SpaceX Crew-1 team that launched to the International Space Station in November 2020. He spent nearly six months aboard the station, completing multiple spacewalks and conducting various scientific experiments.

Koch, 44, is a seasoned astronaut with six spacewalks under her belt and the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, with a total of 328 days in space. She has also worked as an engineer on multiple NASA missions, including developing scientific instruments for the agency's spacecraft.

Hansen, 47, is a fighter pilot who was selected by the Canadian Space Agency for astronaut training in 2009. He will become the first Canadian to travel to deep space, marking a significant milestone in Canada's space program.

The Artemis II mission is set to launch on November 2024 and will take off atop a NASA-developed Space Launch System rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew will embark on a 10-day journey, traveling beyond the moon for the first time in history. After circling the moon, they will return to Earth for a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean.

The Artemis program aims to establish a permanent lunar outpost, paving the way for future missions to Mars and beyond. NASA has been working towards this goal for over a decade, with the Artemis II mission marking a major step forward in the agency's ambitious plans.

When asked about the selection process, Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center, emphasized the diversity of the crew, which includes men and women from different backgrounds. "We have requirements different than we did... just had test pilots on our inaugural missions," she said.

The four astronauts will be featured in an interview on CNN's "This Morning" next Tuesday, marking a special moment for these brave individuals as they prepare to embark on this historic journey.

omg I'm literally so hyped about the new moon mission πŸš€πŸ’« can't wait to see these 4 amazing astronauts get ready to blast off into space! Reid Wiseman's experience is gonna be super helpful, I think he'll make a great commander πŸ™Œ and Christina Koch's spacewalk record is insane πŸ’₯ Jeremy Hansen's gonna be the first Canuck in deep space and that's a huge deal for Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Victor Glover's time on the ISS was so cool, who wouldn't want to live and work in space for 6 months? 😎 this whole Artemis program feels like such an exciting step forward for humanity... let's get ready for some out of this world adventures!

OMG you guys I'm literally SOOO excited about the Artemis II mission πŸš€πŸ‘½ it's like we're finally going to see some real progress in space exploration 🀩 and I'm not just saying that because my boyfriend is besties with Reid Wiseman from NASA 🀫 he told me all about him and how awesome he is 😊 anyway back to the astronauts Christina Koch is literally a hero girl she's done so much for NASA and now she gets to be part of this historic mission πŸ’ͺ Jeremy Hansen is also super cool I love that Canada is finally getting some space cred πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ the whole thing just feels like a dream come true πŸŒ™ can't wait to see them launch next November πŸŽ‰

πŸš€ The thing that really got me is how diverse this crew is - men and women from different backgrounds, all with unique experiences that make them perfect for the job 🀝. Reid Wiseman's leadership skills, Victor Glover's spacewalk expertise, Christina Koch's record-breaking spaceflight, and Jeremy Hansen's deep space travel credentials... it's like NASA took a team of superstars and put them together to tackle this monumental mission πŸ’ͺ.

And you know what that says about us as humans? It says we're capable of achieving greatness when we come together with different perspectives, skills, and experiences 🌎. The Artemis II mission isn't just about sending astronauts to the moon; it's about showing the world what we can accomplish when we put our collective talents towards a common goal πŸš€.

I think that's the real lesson here - that by embracing our differences and working together, we can achieve truly remarkable things πŸ’«.

I'm not holding my breath for this mission πŸ€”. It's just gonna end up like all the others - a bunch of rich dudes and women in space who have no idea what it's actually like to be in the shoes of the average person. I mean, what's next? Are they gonna send some Elon Musk wannabes to Mars too? And what's with the whole "diversity" thing? Just means they're trying to spin this as some kind of publicity stunt to make everyone feel good about themselves πŸ™„. This is just a step in the right direction, but let's be real, it's not like we're gonna see any actual progress or funding for the next 10 years. Mark my words...

πŸš€ I'm so hyped about the Artemis II mission! It's crazy to think we're finally going back to the moon after all those years. I mean, Christina Koch's record-breaking spaceflight is insane 🀯, and Jeremy Hansen becoming the first Canadian in deep space is a major milestone for Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦.

But what really gets me is how diverse this crew is - Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, all from different backgrounds, coming together to make history. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we got this!" πŸ’ͺ

And can you believe the first time we'll be traveling beyond the moon? It's like, what even is that? πŸ€” I need more info on this one. And what about the long-term plans for a permanent lunar outpost? That's some heavy stuff πŸš€.

Overall, I'm stoked to see these astronauts taking the leap and pushing humanity forward in space exploration. Let's do this! πŸŽ‰

OMG, can you believe it? 🀯 A Canadian is finally going to space!!! πŸš€ Jeremy Hansen is gonna make us proud! I'm super hyped for the Artemis II mission and all the history that's about to be made. Christina Koch, though - 328 days in space?! That's insane! 😲 Reid Wiseman as commander is a great pick, he's got experience and leadership skills for days. And Victor Glover was part of SpaceX Crew-1, that's some crazy stuff right there. The diversity of the crew is awesome too, can't wait to hear more about it. Bring on November 2024! πŸŽ‰
