Teyana Taylor's "Gate Agents" Sketch on SNL is Hilarious and Musically Challenged

In a comedic twist, singer Teyana Taylor appeared as a gate agent alongside Kenan Thompson on Saturday Night Live (SNL), delivering frustrating flight updates through comical songs and dance routines. The sketch, which aired on January 24th, played off the winter storms currently sweeping the US.

Thompson's character, dressed in airport attire, tries to ease the frustration of delayed passengers by breaking into song. Taylor joins in as her partner "Shrimp & Grits," trading verses with Thompson over a 1980s-style R&B beat. Their rendition of an update about further flight delays was met with groans from waiting passengers.

As the sketch progresses, Thompson delivers lines such as, "Listen, we don’t make the rules, we just sing 'em to you." The skit culminates with the plane's pilot emerging and announcing that the aircraft's missing wings have been found – but he's too drunk to fly.

Taylor has recently showcased her acting skills in films like "One Battle After Another" starring Leonardo DiCaprio, earning critical acclaim. She also received a best R&B album nomination for "Escape Room" ahead of the 2026 Grammy Awards.

I mean, who needs actual flight updates when you can just bust out some sick dance moves and R&B vibes? 😂 But for real tho, that line about not making the rules but singing them to u is EVERYTHING 💁‍♀️. I'm still trying to wrap my head around Teyana Taylor's SNL sketch 🤣. I mean, who comes up with this stuff? It was hilarious to see her and Kenan Thompson go back and forth like that, especially the part where they're just making stuff up as they go along 😂. But at the same time, it felt really musically...off? Like, what's an R&B beat doing in a sketch about flight updates? It was all over the place 🤷‍♀️. I guess you can't win 'em all, right? And kudos to Taylor for trying something new - even if it didn't quite take off (pun intended). Can't wait to see what she does next!

I just watched this sketch and I'm like, have you ever noticed how our expectations of entertainment can be so tied to reality? Like, we're used to experiencing life through a lens that's already been filtered by someone else's perspective. And then there's Teyana Taylor's "Gate Agents" on SNL... it's just this whole other world where the rules are broken and song and dance become the primary means of communication.

It's almost like, can we learn to see the beauty in this chaos? In the imperfections? Because, honestly, I think that's what made the sketch work – it was so unapologetically absurd. And Taylor's performance, man... she just owns that stage with her confidence and charisma 💁‍♀️🎤

But at the same time, can we also acknowledge how ridiculous some of the lines are? Like, "Listen, we don't make the rules, we just sing 'em to you"? 😂 It's almost like, we're so desperate for connection in a world that's increasingly complex and overwhelming. We crave these silly songs and dances as a way to momentarily escape the anxiety of everyday life.

omg I just watched that sketch and my jaw dropped 🤣 I don't know how they come up with this stuff but it's hilarious... I mean, who writes this stuff? anyway, Teyana Taylor is super talented but I'm not surprised she got roasted on SNL lol. speaking of which, has anyone seen those new iPhone 15 specs? I heard they're so thin you can barely see the screen 📱
 
OMG, Teyana Taylor's comedy skills are on point 🤣, I loved her energy with Kenan Thompson, but honestly, that R&B beat was a bit cringeworthy 😂... can you imagine hearing that song stuck in your head for days? 🎵 and those dance moves though, Shrimp & Grits is a new favorite of mine 🍲🕺. TBH, I think she should stick to acting, her singing voice just didn't quite translate to comedy 😅, but still got some serious laughs out of me 💥

I mean, who thought singing about flight delays would be funny? 🤦‍♂️ The only thing that had me laughing was Kenan Thompson's over-the-top reactions to the whole thing. And don't even get me started on the musical part – it sounded like she was trying to sing in a room full of cats 😹. I mean, I love Teyana Taylor's music, but this sketch just wasn't her thing. And btw, I'm not buying that they're actually hosting SNL anytime soon...

I was like lol at that Teyana Taylor sketch with Kenan Thompson on SNL! The whole thing was just so funny, but you know what's even funnier? She doesn't actually sing or dance well in real life . Like, I get it, the sketch was meant to be comedic and all, but when you watch her performances in "One Battle After Another" or on stage, she seems way more confident with her R&B vibes. Maybe they just wanted to poke fun at herself a bit? Either way, that skit was super entertaining, even if it wasn't exactly the most musically impressive performance .
