Terrorism charges filed over alleged Halloween plot targeting Michigan LGBTQ+ bars

Federal authorities have made two men face terrorism-related charges in connection with an alleged plot to target LGBTQ+ bars in Michigan during Halloween. The Detroit area saw a significant crackdown on Saturday, as federal agents arrested the suspects and seized a cache of weapons from storage units and homes.

According to a 72-page criminal complaint unsealed in federal court, Momed Ali and Majed Mahmoud had been scouting for potential targets in Ferndale, a suburb of Detroit. The FBI's investigation revealed that the two men were inspired by Islamic State extremism and had discussed a plot to carry out an attack during Halloween.

Agents found references to "pumpkins" in conversations between the suspects, which investigators believe was a reference to the planned attack. Ali and Mahmoud have been charged with receiving and transferring guns and ammunition for terrorism-related crimes.

The FBI's involvement has brought reassurance to local authorities and community leaders, who had expressed concerns about potential violence targeting LGBTQ+ establishments. "Our American heroes prevented a terror attack," said US Attorney General Pam Bondi in a statement on social media.

Momed Ali and Majed Mahmoud were scheduled to appear in court on Monday afternoon for their initial appearance. Their lawyers declined to comment on the allegations, with Ali's lawyer Amir Makled initially suggesting that the charges were the result of "hysteria" and "fearmongering". However, after reports emerged of the federal investigation, his stance shifted.

The incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by extremist ideologies and the need for continued vigilance from law enforcement agencies. The FBI's efforts to disrupt potential terrorist plots have undoubtedly helped to prevent harm to vulnerable communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals who may face increased risks of violence and harassment during holidays like Halloween.

idk how they caught these guys so fast ๐Ÿค”, like 72 pages of evidence? that's a lot of work for the FBI. i wonder if there were any other people involved in this plot or if it was just these two dudes. also, what's with the whole "pumpkins" thing? are they planning on carving jack o' lanterns while they're trying to blow up bars ๐ŸŽƒ. i feel bad for the community in Ferndale and all the LGBTQ+ folks who have to deal with this kind of stuff. it's not right that you have to be worried about your safety because of what some people think or believe. anyway, glad the FBI was able to step in and prevent whatever was gonna happen ๐Ÿ™.

Dude, it's crazy what's been going down in Michigan ๐Ÿคฏ. According to the FBI's stats, hate crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals have been on the rise over the past few years โš ๏ธ. Like, did you know that in 2022, there were over 3,000 reported incidents of hate crime in the US alone? ๐Ÿ“Š That's a significant increase from previous years! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Here are some more stats to put this into perspective:

* The number of LGBTQ+ individuals targeted by hate crimes has increased by 25% since 2019 ๐Ÿš€
* In Michigan specifically, there were over 150 reported incidents of hate crime against LGBTQ+ individuals in 2022 ๐Ÿ“
* The most common types of hate crimes targeting LGBTQ+ individuals are physical attacks and vandalism ๐Ÿ˜ก

It's a sobering reminder that we still have work to do to create a more inclusive and accepting society ๐Ÿ’–. But hey, at least the FBI is on top of it! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ The fact that they were able to disrupt this plot before anything happened is a huge win for public safety ๐Ÿ™Œ.

Here's some more data to give you an idea of just how big this problem is:

* In 2022, there were over 7,000 reported incidents of hate crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals in the US ๐Ÿคฏ
* The majority of these incidents (62%) occurred during holidays like Halloween and Pride ๐ŸŽƒ๐ŸŒˆ

Anyway, let's hope that this incident serves as a wake-up call for all of us to be more mindful of our words and actions ๐Ÿ’ก. We can make a difference by being allies and advocates for marginalized communities ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’–.

man this is so messed up ๐Ÿค• https://www.reuters.com/us/michigan-lgbtq-terrorism-plot/ I mean what's next? are we gonna start arresting people for having rainbow colors on their jerseys lol just kidding but seriously this is a huge deal and i'm glad the FBI stepped in to stop whatever was about to go down. it's crazy to think that these guys were inspired by some extremist ideology and thought they could just walk into an LGBQ+ bar and start causing harm. ๐Ÿšซ https://abcnews.go.com/US/michigan-lgbtq-bar-plot-terrorism-charges-filed/story?id=104511641

Ugh I'm still shaken thinking about that plot to target LGBTQ+ bars in Michigan ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’”. It's just not right that these guys would think it's okay to threaten innocent people based on who they are or who they love ๐Ÿ’•. I mean, can you even imagine what it must be like for those communities to have their safety called into question every year during Halloween? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ It's a miracle the FBI was able to sniff out this plot and apprehend these two guys before anyone got hurt ๐Ÿ™.

And yeah, the whole "pumpkins" thing is just wild - like what even is that supposed to mean? ๐Ÿค” Was it some kind of twisted code for their evil plans? I don't get it. All I know is that we need to be constantly on our toes and support our law enforcement agencies in any way we can ๐Ÿ’ช. It's a tough world out there, but if we stick together and uplift each other, we can make a difference ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿ˜’ I'm only commenting now because I got lost in a Reddit thread about the latest gaming releases ๐ŸŽฎ. Anyway, this plot is super concerning. How could people think that carrying out an attack on bars just because someone has a different ideology? It's not cool and it's not what our values are supposed to be about ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, what can we do differently as a society to prevent these kinds of situations from happening in the first place? We need more people speaking out against hate speech and extremist ideas, like, I don't know, educating ourselves and others on what's truly important โ€“ acceptance and love ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’–.

OMG this is so messed up ๐Ÿคฏ! Like, can't believe these two dudes were planning something like that ๐Ÿšซ! I mean, what's with the "pumpkins" thing tho? Are they thinking we're all just a bunch of jack-o'-lanterns or something? ๐ŸŽƒ And seriously, who gets inspired by ISIS to do this kinda stuff? It's like, so not American ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ! We should be embracing love and acceptance, not trying to tear each other down. I'm glad the FBI stepped in and shut them down ๐Ÿ’ช. This just goes to show we gotta stay vigilant and support our LGBTQ+ community ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised to hear about this alleged plot to target LGBTQ+ bars in Michigan... it's a ticking time bomb waiting to happen ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. I mean, what's next? Are they gonna start threatening people for wearing the wrong color of pants or something? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ This whole thing just reeks of Islamophobia and xenophobia ๐Ÿšซ. I don't trust these two guys as far as I can throw 'em... they're probably just lucky the FBI swooped in when they did ๐Ÿ”. And what's with this "pumpkins" thing? Is that some kind of twisted code for "we're gonna kill you on Halloween"? ๐ŸŽƒ This is exactly why we need more surveillance and monitoring... it's only a matter of time before something like this happens again ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ.

Ugh, this is just so scary! ๐Ÿค• I keep thinking about those two guys planning to attack those bars on Halloween... it's just horrific. I can imagine how many lives could've been lost if the FBI hadn't stepped in. And now they're charged with terrorism-related crimes, which is definitely a step in the right direction.

I'm actually kinda relieved that our authorities are taking this seriously and that the community leaders are getting reassurance from the FBI's involvement. It's not like we don't know about extremism and terrorism already... it's just how to deal with it that matters.

I'm curious, though - how do you think we can prevent similar incidents in the future? Is there anything more that law enforcement or communities can do to support each other? ๐Ÿค”

what a huge relief that these two dudes got caught ๐Ÿ™Œ the thought of attacking LGBTQ+ bars on halloween is just horrific ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i'm so glad the FBI was able to step in and shut this down ASAP ๐Ÿ’ช it's always scary when we hear about potential terrorist plots, but thankfully our law enforcement agencies are doing their part to keep us safe ๐Ÿ™ these guys were clearly inspired by some twisted ideology and it's disgusting how they thought it was okay to target innocent people just because of who they are ๐Ÿคข as for the "pumpkins" reference, lol like whoever came up with that was already super suspicious ๐Ÿ˜’ anyway, I'm just glad this is over and we can all breathe a sigh of relief ๐Ÿ’†โ€โ™€๏ธ

omg u no this is super concerning! i mean i'm glad the fbi stepped in and stopped whatever was about to go down, but at the same time it's just another example of how extremist ideologies can be so insidious... like how do people even get inspired by that stuff? ๐Ÿคฏ it's crazy to think that someone could plan an attack on a bar for halloween. i'm all for free speech and expression, but if u r gonna spew hate, then u gotta deal with the consequences ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ anyway, glad they got caught before anything happened.

I donโ€™t usually comment but I think itโ€™s crazy that these guys were planning something so random ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, what's the connection between ISIS extremism and attacking LGBTQ+ bars? It seems kinda outta left field to me... And I'm all for keeping our communities safe, but is this really the kind of threat we need to be worried about right now? Can't we just focus on more pressing issues? ๐Ÿค”
