Chicago Bridge Repair Timeline Unveiled as February Completion Date Nears.
The Chicago Department of Transportation has revealed that repair work on the State Street Bascule Bridge is expected to wrap up by the end of February, paving the way for a potential reopening to traffic in early March. The project, initiated last April, was sparked by an inspection revealing widespread damage to the bridge's floor beams and other structural components, caused by extreme heat.
Initially slated for completion within seven months, delays were incurred as workers identified additional repairs required for some of the steel components. The extended timeline has left commuters with ongoing detours, currently diverting westbound traffic onto Clark and Dearborn Streets.
The 1949-built bridge, deemed "structurally deficient" in a September inspection, was found to be carrying heavy loads daily, with approximately 7,000 vehicles passing over it, including around one-tenth of those being trucks. Despite not posing an immediate safety risk, the condition of key load-bearing parts necessitated urgent repair efforts.
According to the department, trials on the fully repaired bridge will take place in early March weather permitting. Following these tests, pedestrians and vehicles can expect the State Street Bascule Bridge to reopen, marking a significant milestone for local commuters.
