SS United States documentary to show ship's journey from Philly to sea floor

Historic Ship SS United States Embarks on Final Journey to Meet Demise Underwater

A gripping documentary titled 'Superliner: The Enduring Legacy of the SS United States' is set to be released in 2026, offering an exclusive glimpse into the journey of this iconic ship. Produced by Mark Perry and directed by Robert Radler, the film boasts a unique blend of historic footage, archival interviews, and breathtaking underwater sequences.

The documentary will cover the vessel's remarkable story from its maiden voyage in 1952 to its eventual sinking off Florida's coast as an artificial reef. Viewers can expect stunning visuals of the SS United States making its way from South Philly to Mobile, Alabama, where it underwent preparation for its tragic fate. This journey is being captured on camera for the first time, showcasing the ship in action, even at a reduced speed.

As the film progresses, the SS United States Conservancy reveals that the documentary marks an exciting new chapter in the story of this American icon. With contributions from Robby Krieger, guitarist for The Doors, and archival footage from decades past, 'Superliner' promises to be an unforgettable journey through time.

The SS United States's illustrious past is also highlighted by the film, recalling its legendary status as a setting for meetings between four U.S. presidents – Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, and Bill Clinton – alongside renowned celebrities such as Walt Disney, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and John Wayne.

A separate documentary project is currently underway in Okaloosa County to capture the SS United States's final moments before its sinking. This underwater footage will be streamed live via drones and underwater cameras, generating an estimated $68,000 for the county's coffers.

As the countdown begins to the ship's eventual demise, fans of the SS United States are eagerly awaiting 'Superliner', which promises to paint a poignant portrait of this majestic vessel in all its glory – both on the ocean and at the bottom of it.

You know how some things gotta come to an end? The SS United States, just like us, has got its time left ⏰... it's not about whether we're ready for it, but how we make the most of what we've got in those final moments. Think about it, a ship that brought presidents and celebrities together is now getting ready to take its last journey – it's a reminder that every ending marks a new beginning, even if it's under the water 🌊...

I don’t usually comment but I have to say that it’s wild thinking about an iconic ship like the SS United States meeting its demise underwater 😮. I mean, can you imagine seeing the thing actually go down for the last time? 🤯 It's crazy how these documentaries and live streams are gonna be capturing every moment of it, though 📹. And the fact that there's even a special project to stream the final moments live via drones and underwater cameras is just mind-blowing 🚁. I'm low-key excited for this documentary "Superliner" coming out in 2026 - can't wait to see some stunning visuals of the ship making its way from Philly to Mobile, Alabama 🚣‍♀️.

🚣‍♀️ the ss united states is finally getting the respect it deserves, but can we talk about how sad it is that it's ending up as an artificial reef 🌊? i mean, it was meant to be a symbol of american greatness and freedom, not some underwater monument 🤕

Dude I'm low-key bummed that this iconic ship is finally gonna meet its end 🌊💔, but I guess it's only right for it to rest at the bottom of the ocean as an artificial reef? At least we can get some epic underwater footage out of it 📹🌴 and a dope documentary in 2026 to give us a glimpse into its legendary past. Robby Krieger being involved is a nice touch, that guy's got some sick guitar riffs 🎸💥. But seriously, what's gonna happen to the ship's remains after it sinks? Is it just gonna be left there or will they make sure it's preserved in some way?

omg u guys i'm literally so emotional thinking about the ss united states 🤯 i mean can u believe it's been sinking underwater for years? i feel like we're losing a piece of history or something... anyway i've seen some clips from that new docu 'superliner' and it looks SO GOOD!!! they have footage of the ship in action which is just insane. and the part where it talks about all those celebs meeting on the ship? mind blown 💥 i'm literally counting down to 2026 now 😂 btw did u know robby krieger from the doors was involved in making this docu? 🎸

🚢💔 I think it's kinda cool that they're gonna capture the SS United States's final moments underwater, like, literally watching it sink 💀. I mean, can you imagine seeing a piece of history meet its end? 🤯 The fact that there's gonna be some dough for Okaloosa County from it too is nice, plus we get to see some old-school footage of celebs hanging out on the ship 🎬. And I'm intrigued by Robby Krieger being in this doc – never thought I'd see a Doors guitarist talking about an American icon 😉. It's also dope that they're preserving this piece of history for future generations, even if it is at the bottom of the ocean 🌊. Can't wait to watch 'Superliner' and see what it has to say about the SS United States 📺
