South Shore retailer forced to close after property tax hike, as nearby Obama center set to open

Community Store on Brink of Closure Amidst Property Tax Hike as Obama Center Looms Large

A small business in South Shore is on the verge of being shut down after its landlord sold the property to a nonprofit supporting veterans. Mama Africa's Marketplace, which has been operating since 2021, sells African cultural products and provides a community space. The store's owner, Lakiesha Williams, had secured a lease with John Lewis, the building's owner, at a rent of $700 per month.

However, significant property tax hikes led to an increase in Lewis' bills, forcing him to seek a buyer for the property. In October, Williams was notified that her lease would not be renewed, and she was given until January 5th to raise $100,000 cash from private lenders. Despite a GoFundMe campaign launched on December 28th, which has raised over $16,000 so far, Williams fell short of the target.

The buyer, Eli Williamson, is a South Shore resident and founder of Leave No Veteran Behind, a nonprofit that employs people in transitional jobs. Williamson claimed that the sale was necessary due to the building's need for major renovation. However, Williams expressed shock at being informed of the sale on Christmas Day and felt that it could have been handled differently.

Williams argued that the property tax hike was not the primary reason for Lewis' decision to sell, but rather his own financial struggles. She pointed out that if the taxes had remained lower, she would still be able to continue operating the store.

The Obama Presidential Center, set to open in June, has raised concerns among nearby residents about potential gentrification and higher property taxes and rents. Mama Africa's Marketplace is approximately 2 miles from the center, sparking fears that its closure may contribute to this issue.

As Williams faces an eviction case at her home on the West Side, she remains hopeful that her community will rally around her efforts to save the store. However, with the sale set to close soon, it remains uncertain whether Mama Africa's Marketplace will be able to remain in operation.

OMG, this is so sad πŸ€•! I'm literally shook by the news of Mama Africa's Marketplace closing down... like, what's happening?! 😱 They've got a community space that provides a safe spot for people, and they're just gonna let it go because some rich guy wants to make a buck? πŸ’Έ It's not right. And it's all connected to those crazy property tax hikes... ugh! 🀯 I mean, I get it, businesses gotta make ends meet, but this feels like corporate greed at its finest. What's wrong with the community coming together to save their own spot?! 🀝 We need more stories of people supporting each other, not less! πŸ’• This is, like, exactly why we need a stronger support system for small businesses... it's heartbreaking to think that they might just disappear like this. πŸŒͺ️

Man this is so sad πŸ€• I feel bad for Lakiesha Williams and the community that's gonna lose their go-to spot. The property tax hike is already stressing out small businesses, now the store's owner has to scramble to find a buyer at the last minute? It's like, can't we just slow down on all these developments around here? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ The Obama Center is coming and I get it, change is needed, but what about the people who already live here? We need to make sure that our communities aren't getting pushed out by rising costs. πŸ˜•

It's crazy how one decision can lead to a chain reaction of problems 😩... I mean, think about it - if John Lewis couldn't afford the property taxes, he wouldn't have had to sell the store to raise cash πŸ€‘. But now Mama Africa's Marketplace is in danger because of that very same sale πŸ€•. It makes you wonder what would've happened if they'd handled things differently πŸ€”... Maybe they could've found a way to make it work without the GoFundMe campaign or even explored other options like partnering with local organizations to help out πŸ’‘. The fact is, small businesses are already struggling as it is; can we really afford to lose more of them? πŸ’Έ This whole thing just goes to show that sometimes, when we're faced with tough decisions, we gotta think about the bigger picture πŸŒ† and how our actions might impact those around us πŸ‘₯.

Ugh πŸ€•... I'm so bummed out about this mama πŸ˜”. Lakiesha Williams' community space is like, literally the heart of South Shore, you know? It's not just a store, it's a gathering spot for people from all walks of life πŸ’–. The fact that she's being priced out by her landlord over property taxes is just, like, so extra πŸ˜’. And now this nonprofit guy is buying the place and "renovating" it? Sounds like code for gentrification to me 🚨.

I mean, I get it, property tax hikes are a thing, but can't we find ways to make it work for people like Lakiesha instead of pushing them out? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's not just her store that's at risk, it's the community she's built. What's gonna happen to all those people who rely on her space? πŸ€” I'm rooting for you, mama, and I hope your community comes together to save this place πŸ’ͺ. But if not... *sigh* πŸ˜”

Ugh, this is so sad πŸ€•! I'm literally thinking of all the awesome things Mama Africa's Marketplace does for the community, like hosting cultural events and selling unique African products. It's not fair that they're being pushed out by a property tax hike that's affecting everyone equally, but somehow some businesses are bearing the brunt πŸ’Έ.

And can we talk about how convenient it is that Eli Williamson just happens to be related to Leave No Veteran Behind? Like, what are the chances, right? It's almost like he got a free ticket to buy up all the community spaces in South Shore πŸ€‘. I get that renovations are necessary and all, but can't they find another way to fund it without putting small businesses like Mama Africa's on the chopping block? 😩

πŸ€•πŸ˜” This is so sad πŸŽ‰πŸ˜’ for Lakiesha Williams and her community store! 😭 The property tax hike was already a struggle πŸ’Έ, but to lose the lease altogether? 😱 No wonder she's worried about losing everything 🀯. And it's not just the store that's at risk 🏠... her own home is in danger too 🚨.

I feel for John Lewis, the landlord, but this isn't his fault πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. He sold the property to a nonprofit and now he's got to deal with the consequences 😬. And what about Mama Africa's Marketplace? πŸŽ‰ That community space is more than just a store - it's a hub for people to connect and celebrate their culture πŸ’ƒ.

The Obama Presidential Center is going to bring in lots of new people, I get that 🀝... but can't we find a way to make sure everyone has access to affordable spaces like Mama Africa's? πŸ€” Maybe there's a compromise to be had somewhere in the middle βš–οΈ. We need to support Lakiesha and her community - they deserve it ❀️.

I don't usually comment but I'm really worried about this little shop πŸ€•. It's like they're gonna lose their business because of some big changes happening around them... The Obama Center is huge and I get that it's got people worried, but can't we just support these small businesses? They're the heart of our community, you know? Mama Africa's Marketplace isn't just a store, it's a space for people to come together and feel like they belong 🌟. If this happens, I think a lot of people are gonna lose something special... We should definitely be trying to help Lakiesha find a way to keep her business going πŸ˜”

I'm tellin' ya πŸ€”, it's just not right πŸ’”. This Mama Africa's Marketplace, been servin' that community since 2021, and now they're puttin' the squeeze on her with this property tax hike? It's like, hello, we get it, times are tough, but can't we find a way to make it work? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

And then there's this Obama Center thingy comin' in, all shiny and new πŸ’Ž. I'm sure it'll be great for some folks, but what about the rest of us who don't wanna see our communities gettin' priced outta here? It's like, we're already payin' enough rent 🀯.

Lakiesha Williams is doin' everything right, she's got her GoFundMe goin', she's been communicatin' with her community... it's just a shame that things gotta be so tough πŸŒͺ️. I'm keepin' my fingers crossed for her, and all the other small businesses like hers who are gettin' squeezed πŸ’•.

omg is this even real 🀯 mama africa's marketplace has been supporting the community for 4 years now and now they're being forced out by a property tax hike 😭 it's not just about the taxes though, lakiesha was already having trouble making ends meet before that πŸ€‘ what's really going on here? is it just another example of big business pushing out small businesses to make way for gentrification? πŸ€” anyway, i'm literally donating whatever little money i have to their gofundme campaign πŸ’Έ let's see if we can save mama africa's marketplace πŸ’–

Ugh, what's up with this? The Obama Center is just gonna sit there and make everyone else pay for its infrastructure... Meanwhile, a small business owner like Lakiesha Williams is being pushed out because of property taxes 🀯. I mean, I get it, the store needs to stay afloat, but can't John Lewis or whoever just work something out with Williams? It's not like she's trying to scam anyone. And what about the community aspect? Mama Africa's Marketplace is more than just a shop, it's a space for people to come together 🀝. The fact that they're worried about gentrification and property tax hikes when this business is being shut down is just shady πŸ’Έ. I guess only time will tell if Williams can raise the cash or not, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her 🀞

Ugh, this is so sad πŸ€•... Mama Africa's Marketplace is more than just a shop, it's a community hub for African Americans and folks from all walks of life. It's like they're gonna take away our little slice of cultural identity & history πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. I'm really rooting for Lakiesha to save the store, but with the property tax hike & Obama Center looming over us... it's hard to see a positive outcome 🌫️. Can we PLEASE do something to support her? Maybe we can start a petition or rally around the community to show some love ❀️. We gotta keep this small business alive, 'specially during tough times πŸ’ͺ

OMG u guys, cant believe this 🀯! So like, these ppl r tryin 2 push out a small business thats been servin its community for years, and its all cuz of property tax hikes that dont even seem 2 affect the ppl runnin the nonprofit πŸ€‘. Lakiesha's story is straight up heartbreakin, she poured her heart & soul into that store & now its bein taken away from her like that πŸ’”. And whats with John Lewis sellin out 2 some random buyer 4 a quick buck? πŸ€‘ u think he cared bout the community or not? And dont even get me started on the Obama Center, if ppl r really worried about gentrification then why cant they help small businesses like this one instead of just pushin em out to make room 4 fancy new developments πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Umm... like what just happened to Mama Africa's Marketplace? They were selling African stuff and had a community space? πŸ€” I don't get why they have to sell the store now though... ain't property tax hikes kinda like, a thing that happens sometimes? πŸ€‘ And isn't there something about Obama Center opening soon? How's that gonna affect them? πŸ“¦ I heard it's supposed to be big and cool, but at what cost? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

man this is so sad πŸ€• I remember when I was a kid my mom used to take me to these super cool community stores like Mama Africa's Marketplace where we could find all these awesome African cultural products and hang out with the community... now it sounds like those places are getting pushed out by gentrification and big property developments 🀯 like the Obama Center which is just a giant problem waiting to happen. what's going on in this world, first they're kicking out small business owners who can't afford rent because of some fancy tax hike, and then we get some new rich guy swooping in and taking over... and meanwhile Lakiesha Williams has been working her butt off trying to keep her store afloat πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Can't we just slow down for one second and think about the people who are getting left behind by all this urban planning stuff? πŸ˜•

I'm so sad about this! πŸ€• Mama Africa's Marketplace is like a little gem in the South Shore community and I feel for Lakiesha Williams who's going through this tough time 😩. It's just not fair that she gets notified on Christmas Day that her store is being sold out from under her. πŸŽ„ And it's weird to me that the property tax hike isn't even the main reason why John Lewis decided to sell - it seems like there are more complex issues at play here πŸ’”. I do love that there's a nonprofit buying the building and trying to make it work for veterans, though! That's really cool πŸ™. And honestly, I'm kinda worried about the gentrification thing too... our communities need places like Mama Africa's Marketplace to stay true to themselves πŸ€—. Fingers crossed that Lakiesha can get some help from her community and save her store! πŸ’•

Ugh, I'm so sad about this πŸ€• Mama Africa's Marketplace has been a staple in our community for years, and now it's all being taken away from us because of some big money players wanting a piece of the action πŸ’Έ. I mean, I get that property taxes have to be paid, but can't we just find a way to work with the owners instead of kicking people out? πŸ€”

And what really gets me is that this happened on Christmas Day πŸŽ„. Can you imagine getting some bad news like that right in the middle of the holidays? 😱 It's just so unfair to Lakiesha Williams and her customers. She poured her heart and soul into that store, and now it's all being taken away from her πŸ’”.

I know we're worried about gentrification with the Obama Center coming in, but can't we just support local businesses like Mama Africa's instead of pushing them out? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I mean, I've been to that Marketplace countless times, and I always leave feeling energized and inspired. It's more than just a store - it's a community hub πŸ’•.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the community will come together and rally around Lakiesha like she needs us to πŸ™. We can't let this happen without a fight! πŸ’ͺ

You gotta wonder, what's going on here? A small business owner gets screwed by a property tax hike and then a nonprofit buys out the landlord just as things are getting tough? πŸ€” It smells like a classic case of big money coming in and pushing out the little guy. And don't even get me started on this Obama Center thing - it's like they're intentionally setting up conditions for gentrification so they can swoop in and make a profit. πŸ’Έ The government's gotta do something about these predatory practices, you know? We need some regulations to protect our community stores from being taken over by corporate interests. 🚫

Ugh πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ I mean, I get it, property tax hikes are a thing and all that but is it really necessary for the landlord to sell out to some nonprofit? Can't they just work something out with the tenant? And what's up with the GoFundMe campaign? 16k so far? That's barely enough to cover rent for a month πŸ€‘. I mean, I know the store has been operating since 2021 but that doesn't make it immune to financial struggles. And honestly, I'm more worried about the Obama Center and its potential impact on the community. What if this is just the beginning of some bigger gentrification thing? The fact that Mama Africa's Marketplace is already struggling makes me nervous 😬. Can we really afford to lose these small businesses like this? πŸ€”
