Spotify Users Can Now Take Control of Their Algorithmic Recommendations with a Newly Launching Feature.
The music streaming giant has announced its plan to let users personalize their algorithm, the system behind recommendations that suggests songs based on past listening habits and preferences.
In an effort to boost user engagement, Spotify aims to allow more users to participate in this process, effectively shifting control from algorithms back to listeners.
The company stated, "Imagine a Spotify where your ideas, logic, and creativity power the algorithm, directing how it thinks, adapts, and responds to you." With this new feature dubbed "Prompted Playlist", users will have full autonomy to craft a playlist tailored to their taste in music.
This is achieved through a text-based interface that lets users create a custom prompt for the algorithm. For instance, a user might ask "play my top artists from the last five years" followed by deep cuts they haven't heard before. The results would be curated based on these inputted parameters.
Spotify plans to roll out this new feature in beta form initially and will offer an AI-generated playlist experience that adapts to changes in users' tastes over time.
The move comes as a response to other social media platforms like Instagram, which recently introduced the ability for users to tailor their algorithm based on interests.
