Scale Of Iran Protest Massacres ‘Rare Show Of Brutality,’ Analysts Say

Iran's government has committed one of its worst atrocities against unarmed protesters since decades of authoritarian rule, according to analysts and reports.

The scale of the massacres appears staggering, with estimates ranging from 6,000 to over 36,500 deaths in just two days. While the exact number is still unclear due to an information blackout imposed by the regime, it's clear that this is one of the most brutal crackdowns on civilians in Iranian history.

Eyewitness accounts describe the scene as a "blood bath" with regime forces using heavy machine guns to indiscriminately kill unarmed protesters. The sheer scale of the violence has overwhelmed the state's capacity to dispose of the dead, with reports suggesting bodies are still being found in streets and buildings.

Experts point out that even in Syria's devastating civil war, which killed over 500,000 people, there was never a single incident or two-day period that saw such an unprecedented number of unarmed civilians killed. The Iranian government's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij paramilitary forces are responsible for the violence, not the regular national army.

Analysts warn that the true death toll could still be higher due to the ongoing information blackout. Human rights groups have been working tirelessly to document the victims, reporting at least 6,000 confirmed deaths so far, with another 17,000 cases under investigation.

The protests in Iran began in late December over economic grievances and rapidly spread across the country, sparking widespread demonstrations from major cities to rural villages. Disparate segments of society united behind a common goal: replacing the ruling clerical regime that has brought crippling economic and environmental ruin to the nation.

The scale of the violence is being compared to some of modern history's most infamous protest massacres, including Syria's civil war and Iran's own 1979 revolution. However, even in those cases, there was never a comparable level of brutality or loss of life in such a short period.

"It will take time before we have a final number, but this is without a doubt the most brutal suppression of protesters in Iranian history," said Arash Azizi, an expert on Iran's politics and society. "On a global level, too, this is a notable show of brutality, with many Iranians now knowing someone who was killed."

The impact of these massacres will be felt for years to come, with the entire face and psyche of Iranian society changed forever. As more stories come out, it's clear that Iran has entered a dark period in its history, one that may have far-reaching consequences for the nation and its people.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened in Iran 🤯. 36,500+ deaths is just... wow, I don't even know how to process it. The fact that eyewitnesses described it as a "blood bath" with machine guns just makes me so sad for the victims and their families 💔. I mean, I knew protests could get violent, but this level of brutality is just insane. And what's crazy is that it seems like the Iranian government is trying to cover it up - an info blackout? That's just wrong 🚫. I feel so bad for the people who were affected by this and my heart goes out to the human rights groups trying to document everything 💖. This is definitely one of the most shocking news stories I've seen in a while, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it 😓.

this is just insane 🤯 36k+ deaths in 2 days?? that's like war crimes on a mass scale... the world needs to step in ASAP and hold these people accountable for their actions 💔 i mean, what kind of government targets unarmed protesters like this? it's not just about Iran though, it's about us all living in a world where such atrocities can happen without any repercussions 😟

man this is like totally horrific news 🤯💔 36k+ deaths is insane, how can 1 regime do this to its own ppl? 💥 i feel so bad for those who lost loved ones or were even injured in this massacre #JusticeForIran #StopTheBloodshed #HumanRightsMatter

🤔 I think 6k is way too low an estimate...like 50k+ is probably what really went down 🤑 these protesters were super well-organized & prepared to take on the authorities, so it's not like they were just some random rabble getting slaughtered. And yeah, the Iranian government is definitely responsible for all of this – I mean, who else would be dumb enough to send in heavy machine guns against unarmed civilians? 🤷‍♂️

this is just heartbreaking 🤕 what's going on in iran is so devastating i can barely imagine what those ppl are going thru 6k to 36k+ deaths in 2 days? it's hard to even process that kinda number my heart goes out to all the families of the victims and to the people of iran who r struggling under this brutal regime 🙏

🤕 just watching this unfold is so heartbreaking, it feels like we're seeing a different country altogether... 36,500+ deaths in just 2 days? 😱 that's on another level, i mean even syria didn't come close to this level of brutality, and they had an entire civil war going on. it's like iran's government has no regard for human life whatsoever. and the fact that they're trying to cover up the information is just infuriating... how many more lives have to be lost before we take action? 🤯 i fear for the future of iran and its people, it feels like they've been pushed into a dark abyss from which they may not come out. 🌑

the numbers just keep getting crazy 🤯 like we were watching a scene from a war movie or something but it's real life what's going on in iran is literally devastating 36k+ deaths and still counting no one knows how bad it's gonna get experts are saying it could be way higher cuz of the blackout they have there i feel so hopeless thinking about all those innocent lives lost my mind can't even process it 🙈 these protests were just about economic stuff and freedom but now it feels like the gov is trying to crush their souls 2 days of brutal killings and already the whole nation is changed forever

omg 36,500 deaths is just mindblowing 🤯 the scale of violence here is on another level I mean we know the government in Iran has been super repressive but this is just insane how do you even put a number on something like this? i guess it's good that human rights groups are working hard to document all these victims, hopefully they can get an accurate count soon 🤞 and yeah it's crazy how quickly things escalated from economic grievances to this level of brutality...the whole world is still reeling from this news 😱

🚨💀 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this 🤯... 6,000 to 36,500 deaths in just two days?! 😱 That's insane! The scale of this brutality is staggering, it's like something out of a horror movie 🎃. And the fact that eyewitnesses describe it as a "blood bath" with regime forces using heavy machine guns to indiscriminately kill unarmed protesters... it's just horrific 💔.

I'm also worried about the information blackout and how that might affect our ability to get an accurate death toll. 🤔 It's like they're trying to hide something, you know? 😳 And the impact on Iranian society will be felt for years to come, I can feel it in my bones. 🌪️

I'm so glad human rights groups are working tirelessly to document the victims and bring attention to this atrocity. 💖 It's going to take time, but I hope we can get a clearer picture of what really happened. And yeah, this is definitely one for the history books... not in a good way 😔.

😱 this is insane how many people are dead already 6k+ is just crazy and it feels like they're still not getting all the info from the regime 🤯 36k deaths is even more unbelievable if thats true, like what are we gonna do to stop this now? 💔

🤕 just saw this thread from like 3 days ago and i gotta say... its heartbreaking what's happening in iran. the scale of the violence is mindblowing 🤯 even with all the protests and unrest, you never expect it to escalate to this level 😱. my heart goes out to all the families of those who lost loved ones 💔 and the ppl affected by this brutal crackdown 👊. we need to keep following up on this story and hold the gov accountable for their actions 📰💪

🚨💔 u know i was just browsing through some news and i stumbled upon this 🤯 situation in iran where they're basically massacring unarmed protesters left & right... like 6k to 36k+ deaths in 2 days is insane!!! 😱 what's even crazier is that they're not even trying to hide it, just an info blackout 🚫 and they're using heavy machine guns to kill people indiscriminately 💀. this is straight out of a nightmare, you know? 💥
