Rep. Seth Moulton wants to allow lawsuits against ICE agents with new 'NOEM Act'

congressman moulton introduces bill allowing lawsuits against ice agents in civil rights law

Representative Seth Moulton has introduced a bill in Congress that would allow people to sue federal immigration agents, expanding their legal recourse and making them accountable for alleged violations of their constitutional rights.

Moulton, a North Shore Democrat who launched a primary challenge against Senator Ed Markey, hopes to amend the civil rights law to include ICE agents under the same umbrella as state and local officials. Currently, victims have limited options for suing ICE agents, which can be particularly challenging.

The bill, called the National Oversight and Enforcement of Misconduct Act (NOEM), aims to address what Moulton claims is "near-total immunity" enjoyed by ICE officers when they violate Americans' rights on the streets, during home raids, or in public spaces. He argues that federal immigration agents are not above the law and should be held accountable if they break it.

Moulton has already completed two oversight visits to the ICE field office in Burlington, Massachusetts, where he highlighted the "completely inadequate and inhumane" conditions faced by detainees. The congressman's introduction of this bill comes just a week after his previous visit.

The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment on the amendment. Moulton's office stated that the existing system is unfair to victims, who often face significant hurdles when trying to sue ICE agents for alleged constitutional violations.

I'm surprised they're even considering changing this law. I mean, it makes total sense that people can sue ice agents if they do something wrong, right? 🤔 They're supposed to be enforcing the law and protecting our rights, not breaking them! It's like, if a cop does something bad, we don't just sit around waiting for someone else to report it, we take action ourselves. Why should federal immigration agents get special treatment? The conditions at those detention centers sound pretty awful too, completely inhumane...

🤔 This bill could be a step in the right direction... people should be able to hold those in power accountable if they're violating someone's rights. ICE has been getting away with some pretty questionable stuff lately, and it's time someone does something about it. 🚫

omg u guys i am literally so down for this bill 🤩 it's about time someone actually did something about those ice agents being able to get away with all sorts of shady stuff no more are they above the law lol i remember my cousin was detained by ice like 5 yrs ago and she had to deal with so much trauma because nobody would listen to her story now this bill is like a breath of fresh air 🌸 ethan from work told me his sister's brother got sued by an ice agent for something stupid and it took him like 10 yrs to get any kinda resolution so yeah let's make sure that doesn't happen anymore 💯

just saw this and i gotta say its about time someone does something about these ice agents lol they got some serious power with basically no accountability 🤔 and its not like they're immune from the law or anything. think its a good idea that moulton wants to make them accountable for their actions, its only fair that ppl can sue them if they think they've been mistreated

just saw this news and I gotta say, its about time someone steps up for all those people getting messed with by ice agents 🤯 they shouldnt be above the law at all. i mean, what kind of system allows cops/agents to just do whatever they want and then get away with it? moulton's bill is a good start, but we need more accountability and less immunity for these types of officials 🚫

ICE AGENTS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS!!! THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ENFORCING THE LAW NOT BREAKING IT!!! 🚔 I FEEL SO BAD FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN TREATED INHUMANELY BY ICE AGENTS, LIKE THOSE DETAINEES HE SAW IN MASSACHUSETTS. THIS BILL IS A HUGE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND I HOPE REP Moulton SEES IT THROUGH TO THE END!!! 🙏

😊 I'm loving this move by Rep Moulton! It's like he's shining a light on some really shady stuff goin' down with those ice agents. They're supposed to be protectin' our country, but instead they're out here breakin' people's rights left and right. 🤬 It's crazy that victims have so little recourse when it comes to suing 'em for this kind of thing. I mean, can you imagine if a cop did the same kinda stuff? There'd be hell to pay! 🔥 But Rep Moulton is tryin' to hold ICE accountable and that's somethin' to get behind. 🙌 His bill might just make some real changes and give people a chance to seek justice. Fingers crossed it passes! 👍
