Real Madrid show fight but another setback leaves Xabi Alonso's future on knife-edge | Sid Lowe

Real Madrid's spirited performance at Manchester City has done little to alleviate the doubts surrounding coach Xabi Alonso's future at the club. The team's fightback against a two-goal deficit, sparked by Rodrygo's first goal in 33 games, ultimately fell short as they were denied a dramatic comeback.

Alonso watched his players with pride and passion, but it was clear that he is fighting for his own job as much as his team's. A gesture of solidarity last week to the coach who had been struggling at the helm, Alonso now finds himself in a precarious position. The club hierarchy had deemed him surplus to requirements after a dismal run, but this latest defeat has extended the reprieve and raised questions about whether he will be given another chance.

Despite the bleak outlook, there were moments of positivity from Madrid during the match. Vinícius Junior took his place at the forefront, while Dani Ceballos proved an inspired inclusion in midfield. The team's spirit was evident, as they fought hard to reduce the deficit and even denied City a third goal with Thibaut Courtois' outstanding double save.

However, Alonso's own advice to Pep Guardiola before their first meeting – "piss with your own penis" or, essentially, do things your way – has proved harder for him to implement than it was for his former rival. The Manchester City coach's words about building a team based on conviction rather than accommodation seemed to be lost in translation at the Bernabéu.

With several key players absent due to injury and suspension, Alonso was left to field an unusual lineup that broke from tradition. Still, there were glimpses of the old Madrid spirit, particularly when Rodrygo celebrated his goal with a heartfelt hug for his coach.

Ultimately, though, it was not enough. The final whistle was a harsh reminder that another improbable resurrection was denied to Madrid, and Alonso's fate hangs precariously in the balance. While the team will regroup and look forward to their next challenge, the question on everyone's mind is whether this underwhelming performance has been enough to rescue Xabi Alonso from the brink of dismissal.

It feels like Real Madrid is in a bit of a mess right now 😞. They put up a great fight against Manchester City but ultimately fell short. It's hard not to feel for coach Xabi Alonso, he seems to be fighting for his job just as much as the team. The fact that this latest defeat has extended his reprieve is a mixed bag – it means they've got more time to turn things around, but it also means there's still so much work to do.

One thing that gives me hope, though, is how well some of the players performed. Vinícius Junior was on fire and Dani Ceballos looked like a total game-changer in midfield 🤩. And I loved the moment when Rodrygo celebrated his goal with a big hug for Alonso – it showed there's still a lot of love for the coach from the team.

But at the end of the day, it's not enough to just be good – you've got to win consistently and make the fans feel like they're part of something special. Until that happens, Alonso's future is going to be tough to predict 🤔.

I don't know why they're still havin' doubts about Alonso 🤔... like, what's the big deal? He gave it his all out there and his team showed spirit 💪! You gotta give 'em credit for fightin' back from 2 goals down. And Rodrygo finally gets a goal after 33 games 🎉... that's somethin' to cheer about! Alonso might not be the most popular guy, but he's still got some good ideas up his sleeve 💡... I mean, who needs a fancy new contract when you've got players like Vinícius and Dani Ceballos on your team? 🤷‍♂️

I'm soooo sad 4 Real Madrid 🤕😔. They had that spark but couldn't quite ignite 🔥🌟. Alonso's got my ❤️, I wanna see him succeed 💪🏼, but this defeat is a tough pill to swallow 💊. The team's spirit was there 👍, but the squad's missing some key players and it showed 🤦‍♂️.

Alonso needs to stick with his guns 💥 and trust his instincts 👊. He can't change his style just 2 fit in w/ Pep Guardiola 👫. Let's be real, Alonso's got a point 📝 - he shouldn't compromise on his vision for the team 🤯. I hope the club hierarchy gets their priorities straight 💼 and gives him another chance ⏰.

We all know how much that Rodrygo loves his coach ❤️👫. It was so sweet 2 see him celebrate w/ a big hug 🤗! But, in the end, it wasn't enough 🎉😔. Now we're left wondering... is Alonso's job on the line? ⚠️ only time will tell ⏰

🤔 I gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed with Real Madrid right now. They looked really out of sync and didn't play like themselves at all 🏆. Xabi Alonso's tactics just weren't working, no matter how hard his players tried 💪. It's like they were trying to make up for something, but it wasn't enough 🔮. I mean, who needs Rodrygo scoring after 33 games to turn the game around? 🤦‍♂️ Still, I gotta give credit to Vinícius Junior and Dani Ceballos - they looked like the only ones trying to do things right on the pitch 😎. But in the end, it just wasn't enough ⚽️. Can Xabi Alonso turn this season around? 🤔 I'm not so sure... 🤷‍♂️

Man, this defeat is a perfect example of how teams can't just rely on one player to make all the magic happen 🤯🏆. I mean, Rodrygo scored that beauty goal after 33 games without one, but it's not like he single-handedly saved the team. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we've got a superstar, so Alonso must be doing something right" 🙄.

But seriously though, this whole thing is about accountability and leadership. I think what bothers me most is that Madrid can't seem to adjust their tactics mid-game, whereas City just goes with their system and makes it work 💪. It's like they're saying, "We'll do things our way, no matter who's in charge." And Alonso can't compete with that level of conviction?

Now, I'm not saying Alonso is bad, but he needs to prove himself in this modern era where teams adapt quickly on the fly 🔄. Can't just rely on old-school tactics; you gotta innovate and evolve like City does. It's time for Madrid to rethink their approach and find a new direction 🔜.

OMG I THINK XABI ALONSO IS IN BIG TROUBLE NOW!!! 🤯👊 HE WAS RIGHTLY SUSPENDED AFTER THAT LAST GAME AND THIS ONE WASN'T MUCH BETTER!!! 😩 BUT AT THE SAME TIME YOU CAN SEE WHY PEOPLE WERE LIKE "LET HIM STAY" WHEN THEY SAW HOW HARD HIS PLAYERS WERE FIGHTING FOR HIM OUT THERE!! 💪🏽💕 RODRYGO'S GOAL WAS LIKE A SYMBOL OF THEIR SPIRIT AND THIBAUT COURTOIS' SAVES WERE SO EPIC!!! 🤩 I DONT KNOW WHAT TO THINK RIGHT NOW BUT I GUESS WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR ALONSO AND REAL MADRID!!!! 😬👀

I get why people are doubting Alonso... 2 goals down at home is a huge ask to come back from 🤯 But you can't deny the spirit of the team! They gave it their all and almost got that comeback 🎉 Vinícius and Dani were solid, Thibaut made some insane saves 🙌 It's just that sometimes things don't go as planned... Alonso's trying his best, we should give him a chance to figure it out 🤔 Maybe the team needs a bit of rest and regrouping? Fingers crossed for the next match! ⚽

omg, i'm so salty about this match lol 🤯🏆 what was alonso thinking with that strategy btw? like, he knew they were gonna get thrashed and still went all in? 🤔 i think it's a shame he didn't take more risks with the lineup, but at the same time, vinicius junior was on fire 🔥👏 and we all know dani ceballos is a beast in midfield 💪. thibaut courtois' saves were insane tho 😲, if only they could've gotten that third goal lol. anyway, i'm totally with you, alonso needs to be given another chance 🤞👊

I don't know how much more Alonso can take 🤯. Like, seriously, he's fighting for his job just as hard as the team is and that's wild. Vinícius Junior stepped up big time though, I love seeing him shine 🔥. And Courtois' double save? Insane! 😲 But the question remains: can Alonso turn it around? He needs to figure out a winning formula ASAP or it's gonna be goodbye 👋. The club should at least give him some more time to prove himself 🕰️.

omg u guys i was literally at the stadium last week & i saw Rodrygo's goal lol he was so hyped after scoring his 1st goal in like 33 games 🤩👏 anyway back to xabi alonso i feel bad for him because he gave pep guardiola some kinda advice before their match but tbh it didn't work out 😐 the thing is Alonso has been trying to adapt his tactics & it's just not working so yeah i think it's time for a change 🤔
