Plex's Crackdown on Free Remote Streaming Access Begins This Week.
Streaming service Plex is cracking down on its users' ability to access free remote streaming through a personal media server. As of this week, Roku users will be the first to feel the impact of these new rules, with a subscription fee required for remote access via Plex's OS app.
Previously, anyone outside a server owner's network could access their media library through Plex for free. However, under the new rules announced in March, a server owner needs to have a Plex Pass subscription, which costs $7 per month, to grant users remote access. Alternatively, someone can remotely access another person's Plex server by buying their own Plex Pass or a Remote Watch Pass, which is a subscription with fewer features and starts at $2 per month.
The changes took effect on April 29, but according to a recent Plex forums post, the rollout will begin this week, requiring a subscription for users accessing Plex's Roku OS app. This requirement change will also apply to other Plex TV apps, such as Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, and third-party clients using the API to offer remote streaming in 2026.
The new rules are part of a broader effort by Plex to increase subscription revenue and keep up with "rising costs" associated with supporting various devices and codecs. The company has been making changes to its features and pricing in recent months, including the introduction of social features, a mobile app redesign, and forays into renting out officially licensed movies.
However, these changes have not sat well with long-time users who rely on Plex as a media server. For those seeking software packages more focused on media hosting, alternatives like Jellyfin are becoming increasingly attractive.
