OpenAI Releases Its 'More Conversational' GPT-5.1

OpenAI's latest model update promises a more conversational experience with GPT-5.1, which is now live for paid ChatGPT users. The new version boasts improvements in intelligence and playfulness, allowing it to engage in conversations that feel more natural.

The company has released two versions of the updated model: GPT-5.1 Instant, designed to be the most-used model, and GPT-5.1 Thinking, an advanced reasoning model that provides clearer responses on complex tasks. The new models are expected to burn fewer tokens on basic questions, making them more efficient.

In addition to improved performance, OpenAI is introducing new conversation styles called Professional, Candid, and Quirky, which join the existing styles Default, Friendly, Efficient, Cynical, and Nerdy. These modes will be available across other models, offering users more granular control over ChatGPT's tone.

According to Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the update is a "nice upgrade" that brings ChatGPT closer to feeling like it fits each user. The company aims to continue improving along these dimensions and is positioning GPT-5.1 as part of a larger shift towards a more personalized experience with ChatGPT.

As part of this effort, OpenAI is experimenting with more granular control over ChatGPT's personality beyond preset modes. This could lead to even more tailored experiences for users in the future.

While the details of these updates are promising, it remains to be seen how they will impact the overall user experience and whether they address some of the criticisms leveled against GPT-5 and other chatbot models.

OMG 😂 I'm like totally stoked about this new update! But let's get real, people 🙄. We've been waiting for this for ages right? I mean, 1.1 was a major upgrade already and now we're jumping straight to 5.1? That's some serious tech sauce 🔥. And can we talk about the fact that they're making ChatGPT more conversational? Like, duh! It's about time, right? 😂 But seriously, I'm curious to see how this new version holds up against those pesky criticisms. One thing for sure, it'll be interesting to see if OpenAI can keep up with the hype 🤔.

idk about this... sounds like they're trying to make it more human-like but is that really a good thing? I mean, what if its just trying to mimic our language patterns instead of actually understanding the context? and burning fewer tokens on basic questions seems like a weird metric - how does that even work?

also, whats up with these new conversation styles? Professional, Candid, Quirky... sounds like they're trying too hard to be relatable. cant we just stick with something simple? and what about the potential impact on misinformation or echo chambers? arent we already seeing enough of those online?

i'm not saying its a bad thing that they're experimenting with more granular control over personality, but how much control do users really want anyway? it sounds like a slippery slope to me

I'm curious about these new conversation styles tho 🤔... how do we know what's "quirky" supposed to sound like, exactly? Is this just some fancy marketing term or are there actual guidelines on how to use it? I need to see some proof that these modes aren't just a way for OpenAI to say they're more personal while still keeping things pretty generic 💡

OMG 🤩 I'm so hyped about this update!! I mean, who wouldn't want a more conversational AI that feels like it's having a natural convo with you? 😊 The new modes are gonna be SO cool! Can you imagine having a Quirky chat with your fave AI model? 🤔 It's all about making ChatGPT feel more personalized and just, you know, more YOU. 💖 I'm curious to see how this will impact the user experience, but overall, I think it's a major win for OpenAI! 👍

I'm still on the fence about ChatGPT's new update 🤔. It sounds like a major leap forward, but we've heard that before, and it's never quite lived up to the hype yet 😐. I mean, more efficient basic questions is a great start, but what about all the edge cases and weird conversations that still stump the model? 🤷‍♂️ They're talking about more granular control over personality modes, which is cool, but how do they plan on balancing that with keeping the experience conversational and natural? 🤔 It's gonna be interesting to see how this all plays out...

idk about this "upgrade" ... what's really changed? just more modes for users to play with? and what's with the promise of a more personalized experience? how are they gonna get it right next time? and what about all those criticisms? is this just a PR stunt to get people excited again? need some hard numbers or studies on how these changes will actually affect users before i start getting hyped 🤔

I'm not sure if I'm sold on this latest update just yet 🤔... Don't get me wrong, more conversational AI sounds cool and all, but have we really been waiting for a chatbot that can "feel" like it fits each user? That sounds like a pretty tall order to me 🚀. And what's up with the new conversation styles? Are we just going to start relying on our chats to be more "quirky" or something? 🤷‍♂️ It seems like they're just trying to fit into the latest trends, rather than actually addressing some of the deeper issues with chatbots...
