NYC could soon require graphic cautionary images in gun shops

New York City poised to slap a stark warning on guns: Are graphic images the key to reducing gun violence?

The New York City Council is set to pass legislation requiring gun shops across the city to display graphic, cautionary images about the dangers of keeping a firearm at home. The bill would be similar to the warnings printed on cigarette packs in other countries and aims to deter residents from owning guns.

Critics argue that gun laws have done little to curb violence and that stricter regulations are necessary. The recent drop in shootings is seen as a positive trend, but high-profile incidents continue to spark concern among lawmakers.

According to City Councilmember Erik Bottcher, the images would be designed by the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and displayed prominently in gun shops. Failure to comply would result in fines of up to $10,000 for repeat offenders.

Bottcher believes that graphic warnings are more effective at conveying a message than text alone, citing public health campaigns as an example. The legislation has garnered support from 31 councilmembers, ensuring its passage.

New York City's strong gun laws and firearm safety initiatives have earned the city recognition as a leader in combating gun violence.

I dont think it's a good idea to display graphic images about guns at home, they might just scare people into hiding their guns instead of making them safer πŸ€”. What if you're a responsible gun owner who knows how to handle your firearms? You'd probably feel like the city is trying to control your stuff.

I'm not sure about this whole graphic images thing... it feels like another way for lawmakers to feel like they're doing something, without actually addressing the root of the problem πŸ€”. I mean, can we really expect people to be deterred by a bunch of scary pictures on a gun shop wall? What's next, warning labels on video games and movies too? It just seems like more regulation, not necessarily more solutions.

And what about free speech? If people want to own guns, shouldn't they have the right to know the risks involved? I'm all for public health campaigns, but this feels like a slippery slope. Are we going to start regulating what kind of movies we watch or what kind of music we listen to too? It's just not that simple...

idk about this new bill πŸ€”, think it's a good idea but also kinda worried that people will just ignore it or get defensive πŸ™„. i mean, graphic images of gunshot wounds might make some people more hesitant to buy guns, but what if others are like "whatever" and still do it anyway? also, how effective will these warnings be in preventing actual shootings from happening at all? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ still think stricter regulations are needed, but maybe we should explore other ways to prevent gun violence besides just scaring people away with pictures 😊

I don't know about this new law thingy... graphic images on guns might work for some ppl but idk if it'll actually stop people from owning them πŸ€”. I mean, ppl are complex & stuff and just 'cause u show em a pic of a gunshot doesn't mean they're gonna be like "oh no, i don't wanna own a gun now". Plus, what about all the ppl who already have guns & dont think its a big deal? It's like, good intention, but is it really gonna make a diff πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

I'm low-key worried about this new bill πŸ€”. I mean, I get it, graphic images might be more effective at stopping people from owning guns, but what if they just end up looking super sadistic? Like, would we really want to see pictures of mangled limbs or kids with gun wounds plastered on our walls? It feels like a Band-Aid solution, you know? We need real systemic changes, not just some added visuals πŸ“Έ. And what's next? Will they start putting up signs in every corner store that say "Gun ownership may cause emotional trauma"?

I'm low-key impressed by this move πŸ€”. I think graphic images can be super effective at conveying the risks of owning a gun. Like, imagine you're browsing online and come across a website that promotes some sick new gaming setup... but then it's followed by a massive disclaimer about the potential for accidents or intentional harm 🚨. It grabs your attention, right? And it might actually make people think twice before handling firearms in their own homes.

I'm also kinda curious to see how this plays out in real life. Will these images be scary enough to deter people from owning guns? Or will they just become a nuisance for gun shop owners who have to deal with the hassle of displaying them all the time?

It's awesome that NYC is taking proactive steps to address gun violence, though πŸ™Œ. We need more cities like this one that are willing to think outside the box and try new approaches to tackle tough issues.

I think this is a great idea πŸ€”! Those graphic images are like, super powerful 😲. I mean, we all know that guns can be deadly, but sometimes you gotta see it to believe it, right? It's like the warning labels on those cigarettes - they work, don't they? πŸ’Έ

I'm not sure if it'll make a huge difference, but it's worth a shot, you know? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to guns. And who knows, maybe it'll deter some people from owning them in the first place. That's gotta count for something, right?

I'm also loving that NYC is taking this seriously and going above and beyond πŸ’ͺ. They're not just talking about gun laws, they're actually doing something about it. We should all be supporting their efforts πŸ’•.

I'm not sure about this new idea of displaying graphic images at gun shops πŸ€”. I mean, I get where they're coming from - we need to reduce gun violence and all that. But are these warnings gonna really stop people from owning guns? Like, think about it... if someone's already got a gun, they might be like "oh, this image is just making me more cautious" 😐. It's not like they were planning on using it for anything bad in the first place.

And what's with all these images anyway? Are they gonna be super graphic or just kinda... suggestive πŸ“Έ? Either way, I'm not sure how effective they're gonna be. Maybe they should focus more on education and safety classes instead? Like, teach people how to handle guns properly and why owning one in the first place can be a big responsibility.

I wonder if people who own guns really think twice about it after seeing those graphic images. My cousin's friend got shot once and now he's super against guns. But I'm not sure how effective this warning is gonna be. Like, what if someone sees the image but still decides to get a gun? It's like, they're all 'oh no' for a sec but then they're back to their old ways. I guess it's worth a try tho? My fave way to reduce gun violence is like, just educate ppl about how many ppl there are who have been affected by gun violence and stuff.

πŸ˜’ I don't think graphic images are gonna work for everyone. Like, what if it's just a poster on the wall while you're browsing through scopes online? It's not like people won't find ways to get around it πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And it's not all bad news, gun laws have helped keep New York City relatively safe compared to other big cities...

Ugh, another forum thread that always devolves into a mess πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. But seriously, have you guys considered how this whole graphic warning thing is gonna affect the actual users? I mean, I get where they're trying to deter people from owning guns, but what if it's just gonna be seen as clickbait for thrill-seekers or conspiracy theorists? And $10k fines? That's a pretty harsh penalty. What about the shop owners who can't afford it? πŸ€‘ It feels like we're not really addressing the root cause of gun violence here. Maybe instead of graphics, they should focus on improving mental health resources and community programs that actually help people. Just saying πŸ‘Ž

Umm... I think graphic images might actually make people more hesitant to buy guns πŸ€”, but on the other hand, isn't it kinda insensitive to display gruesome pics in gun shops? Like, aren't we trying to scare people away or something? 😳 I mean, if you wanna reduce gun violence, shouldn't we focus on education and proper training instead of just scaring people off with some creepy images? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But at the same time... what if it actually works and people do start putting their guns down because they're like "oh no, I don't wanna die from a gunshot 😱"? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ It's all so confusing!

just wondering if making guns look ugly will really make people think twice about owning one πŸ€”πŸ’‘ not sure about this idea, but at least we're trying to spark some conversation about it... what's the harm in looking at a warning on a pack of cigarettes and thinking twice? maybe these images can help people realize how serious gun ownership is πŸ‘

I think it's about time they take a stand πŸ€”... those graphic images are gonna grab people's attention and maybe make them think twice before buying a gun πŸ’₯. I mean, if cigarette packs can do it for cigarettes, why not for guns? It's all about prevention and public health, right? πŸ™ My cousin's aunt lives in NYC and she's been following this bill closely... from what she says, it's been a long time coming, but hopefully it makes a difference. The stats are there, the gun violence has gone down, so I'm all for anything that can help keep the city safe πŸ’ͺ.

OMG, I think this is such a dope idea 🀩! Those graphic images are like, super eye-catching and can really drive home the point about how deadly guns are πŸ’€. I've seen those cigarette pack warnings and they're so effective at making you think twice about smoking, why not guns?! πŸ€” It's all about education and awareness, right? And $10k fines for gun shops that don't comply? That's like, totally reasonable πŸ˜‚. I'm hyped that the council is taking action to reduce gun violence in NYC - let's keep the city safe! πŸ’–

I THINK THIS IS A SUPER IDEA!!! 🀩 WE NEED MORE MINDS LIKE ERIK BOTTCHER WHO ARE WILLING TO GET CREATIVE AND TRY NEW THINGS TO TACKLE THE PROBLEM OF GUN VIOLENCE IN OUR CITIES! 😊 I MEAN, LET'S FACE IT, IF PEOPLE CAN SEE GRAPHIC WARNINGS ABOUT SMOKEPACKS, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH THE RISKS OF OWNING A FIREARM WITHOUT KILLING SOMEONE OR HURTING THEMSELVES!!! πŸ’₯ PLUS, $10,000 FINE IS NOTHING BURNED IN MY WALLET, BUT IT COULD MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE FOR THOSE WHO WOULDN'T HAVE ELSEWHERE! πŸ€‘

omg i think this is such a good idea!!! πŸ˜‚ u no how many ppl r like "oh its just gonna be a sec" when they r holding a gun & then BAM 🀯 it happens... graphic images r super effective at makin people think twice b4 they take that step. and yeah we need stricter laws 2 πŸ™Œ but this is a good start!!! πŸ’‘ lets get those ppl thinkin about the consequences before they own a gun lol 10k fine might not be enough, but its a start! πŸ˜‰

I'm not sure about this idea... I mean, I think it's good that they wanna reduce gun violence but are graphic images really gonna stop people from owning guns? Like, what if someone sees an image of someone getting shot and now they're all paranoid about their own gun at home? πŸ€” My cousin owns a gun for hunting and he's super responsible with it... I don't think he'd be scared off by some picture. And what about people who can't read English? Would the images just be in English or would they have to include like, pictures of guns too? That seems kinda confusing... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I think it's kinda cool that they're thinking outside the box with these graphic images πŸ€”. Like, we all know that guns are super deadly, but do we really need to see explicit pics of gunshot wounds or whatever to get the point? I mean, the whole cigarette pack thing is a bit extreme, but if it's working for them... πŸ’Έ

I'm not saying it won't work, but what about people who've had traumatic experiences with guns? Will they be traumatized all over again just by seeing some graphic images? πŸ€• It's a thin line between educating people and triggering people. IDK, maybe the city has thought this through more than we do πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

The fact that it's got 31 councilmembers on board is pretty impressive πŸ’―. I guess you could say they're trying to take a different approach to addressing gun violence. Not everyone's gonna agree with it, but hey, at least they're trying something new 😐
