New York Archdiocese installs new Archbishop Ronald Hicks at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

New York Archdiocese Installs Archbishop Ronald Hicks as Its New Leader

A new chapter has been written for the Roman Catholic Church in New York, as Archbishop Ronald Hicks was formally installed at St. Patrick's Cathedral, succeeding Cardinal Timothy Dolan who stepped down upon reaching 75 years old. The appointment of Hicks, a 58-year-old bishop from Illinois, marked a significant shift for the archdiocese, with Hicks becoming the first fluent Spanish speaker to lead the church.

In his remarks on Thursday, Hicks emphasized his commitment to revitalizing the faith and reconnecting with Catholics who have drifted away. "How do we pass our faith on to the next generation? How do we be a Church that is relevant, living, and beautiful, sharing our faith together?" he asked, outlining his vision for the church's future.

Hicks' appointment was not without controversy, however. His ability to connect with New York City's diverse Catholic population, which speaks multiple languages, has been hailed as a significant asset in an increasingly polarized society. "I think Archbishop Hicks will try to really be a centrist figure, a unifier," noted David Gibson, director of the Center on Religion and Culture at Fordham University. "The mantra, the literal motto of Pope Leo is 'unity.' But we're in such a polarized time, and that's going to be difficult to do."

Cardinal Dolan praised Hicks as "immensely qualified" for his new role, pledging his support for the archbishop-designate. Hicks' own background, which includes serving as bishop of Joliet, Illinois, and spending five years as a missionary in El Salvador, suggests that he is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of New York's Catholic landscape.

On Friday, Hicks will formally assume his new role at St. Patrick's Cathedral, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Roman Catholic Church in New York.

so another new archbishop in NYC 🤔... sounds like they're trying to appeal to everyone with this fluent Spanish thing, lol who does that? anyway, hope he can bring some much needed unity to the church, seems like it's been a bit of a mess lately 😅 also, 58 is pretty old to be taking on such a big role, wish him all the best tho 🙏

im so hyped about archbishop ronald hicks becoming the new leader of the roman catholic church in new york! i think its awesome that he speaks fluent spanish and can connect with the diverse catholic population here. we need more leaders like him who are all about unity and being a beacon of hope for people from different backgrounds 🌎💖 his vision to revitalize the faith and pass it on to the next gen is really inspiring. cant wait to see what he accomplishes in his new role 😊

🤔 just thinking about this new leader... 58 years old and already making waves 🌊 i think it's dope that he's fluent in spanish tho 🌎 like how can you not connect with the hispanic population in NYC? 😂 anyway, gonna be interesting to see how he brings about change 💡 gotta respect him for being a unifier in these polarized times 🤝

so its official archbishop ronald hicks is leading the catholic church in nyc now 🙏 i remember when my abuela used to tell me stories about how she and her friends would go to mass at st patricks cathedral back in the day and they all spoke spanish and english but it was all so different from today i think its cool that archbishop Hicks is fluent in spanish hes gonna be able to connect with more people in the community 💬

idk about this guy Hicks... seems like he's got some big shoes to fill after Dolan stepped down 🤔💼 i mean, revitalizing faith and connecting with people who've drifted away is one thing, but how's he gonna do it without alienating the more conservative Catholics? it's a tough balancing act, you know? 😬 gotta be careful not to divide the flock too much. on the other hand, his Spanish skills are a major plus 🤩 gotta love that they're finally getting someone who speaks fluent Spanish leading the church. maybe this guy can bring some fresh perspectives and help the church stay relevant in the 21st century 💡

idk why people are saying he's not qualified lol Archbishop Hicks seems like a pretty normal guy who wants to do good 🤷‍♂️ and connect with ppl from different backgrounds. i mean, yeah it's cool that he speaks fluent spanish but what's wrong with trying to unite ppl instead of tearing them apart? 🙄 his vision for the church sounds pretty decent too, passing faith on to the next gen and being a living example is def something we can learn from 🕊️ let's not write him off just yet, give the dude a chance 👍

I'm thinking about this new archbishop and how he'll fit in our school's events 🤔... I mean, have you seen the different languages spoken by students here? We need someone who can understand us, not just English. It would be awesome if we had a church that was inclusive like that - maybe they could even bring in speakers for our school events! 🎤

archbishop ronald hicks' appointment as the new leader of the roman catholic church in new york is a big deal 🤔... i'm curious to see how he'll balance being fluent in spanish with connecting with the diverse catholic population here. his vision for the church's future, reviving the faith and making it relevant to young people, is something that needs to happen ASAP ⏰... but let's be real, the whole "unity" thing feels like a bit of a challenge in this polarized society 🤷‍♂️... still, i'm keeping an eye on him 👀

omg i heard archbishop hicks is going to be super good @ the new york archdiocese 🙏 he's like totally fluent in spanish which is gonna help him connect w/ the diverse catholic community in nyc 💬 i mean, it's not gonna be easy 2 b a unifier in a polarized society but i'm rooting 4 him 2 try 💪 i've been to st patricks cathedral a few times and it's always so beautiful @ night w/ all the candles lit ✨ btw, has anyone else heard of cardinal dolan? he seems like a pretty cool guy 👍

📰 I think this is a big deal! Having someone fluent in Spanish speak lead the church here makes total sense. NYC is already super diverse and it's about time we have someone who can connect with everyone. 🌎 As for the controversy, yeah I get why people are worried. It can be hard to be a unifier in times like these, but I think Hicks seems like a good bet. His background sounds really cool too - five years as a missionary? That's some serious commitment! 💪 He'll definitely have his work cut out for him, but I'm hoping he can bring some fresh energy to the church. 🕊️

the catholic church needs someone like archbishop hicks who can connect with people from all walks of life 🤝...i mean, spanish is such an important language and it's awesome that he's fluent in it 💬...i'm curious to see how he'll tackle the whole 'relevance' thing - i think a big part of it is being willing to listen and adapt to new situations 🎧...it's good to have a leader who's all about unity and bringing people together 🌈

🤝 Just reading about Archbishop Ronald Hicks' installation and I'm thinking how cool it is that he's the first fluent Spanish speaker to lead the archdiocese. It's like, his language skills will really help connect him with the diverse crowd here 🌎💬. At the same time, I can see why some people might think he'll struggle to be a unifying force in such a polarized society... it's not gonna be easy 🤯. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how things play out 🔮

just got wind of this archbishop ronald hicks thing 🤔 and gotta say, i'm super stoked about it! like, having someone who speaks spanish fluently leading the church is a major win 🎉 especially with nyc being one of the most diverse cities in the world. the fact that he's all about being a centrist figure and unifying people is music to my ears 🎵 gotta see how this plays out! and i love how he's already emphasizing the importance of passing faith on to the next gen 👧🏽👦🏼 gotta get on board with that vibe!

I think it's awesome that he's fluent in Spanish, now we can reach out to more people who don't speak English fluently 🌎 #InclusionMatters #LanguageBarriers

But, I'm curious about how he'll balance being a unifying figure with the fact that NYC is super polarized right now 🤔 #UnityInAction #PolarizedSociety
