NASA is gearing up to give its citizen scientists a bigger perspective on the environment, thanks to an upgrade in the GLOBE (Global Learning & Observations to Benefit the Environment) Program. The new feature allows volunteers of all ages to receive satellite data that matches their own observations, including land cover.
The program, which aims to engage the public in collecting environmental data, has seen a huge response from its users since it was launched. "Feedback from NASA is huge," says Tina Rogerson, who manages the satellite comparison emails for the GLOBE Observer Team. "It ties NASA science into what they saw when they did the observation."
When a volunteer receives an email with their satellite data match, they can see how their observations of land cover fit in with the wider space-based view. This new tool is expected to raise greater awareness of how NASA observes our planet from space and inform societal needs.
The update builds on the success of the cloud comparison system, which has been well-received by GLOBE volunteers. "Seeing that bigger, impactful perspective via the satellite comparison email is motivating," says Rogerson. The hope is to encourage more people to continue collecting Earth system observations for GLOBE's long-term environmental record.
The upgrade was made possible by the NASA Science Activation program, which connects NASA science experts with community leaders and organizations to promote deeper understanding of our world.
