Mother mourns son, 15, killed in Halloween shooting on Near West Side

Local Teen's Life Cut Short in Sudden, Tragic Halloween Shooting

When John Thomas set out on his bike ride home from trick-or-treating Friday afternoon, he was unaware that his life was about to be brutally cut short. The 15-year-old was fatally shot in the 1300 block of West Grenshaw Street on the Near West Side, a community already reeling from gun violence.

According to eyewitnesses, John was biking towards his father's house when a resident, who wishes to remain anonymous for safety reasons, heard a dozen shots fired in rapid succession. The witness described the scene as "like a war zone," with muzzle flashes and blood-soaked streets.

John reportedly retaliated by pulling out a gun from his bike, but it is unclear if this was confirmed by Chicago police. What is certain is that he was shot again, and this time, he fell to the ground, motionless.

"I saw him fall back and he was motionless, and then the car drove off," the witness recalled. "When I went to call 911, all I could see in my head is this kid lying on his back with his arms flayed and completely motionless."

Responding officers attempted to save John's life, but unfortunately, they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 4:48 p.m.

John's mother, Selinda Bennett, described her son as a loving family man who considered everyone he met to be his "family." She remembered how John would often joke with friends and take time to cook for his relatives.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving residents feeling vulnerable and concerned about their safety. The resident who witnessed the tragedy expressed a desire for increased security measures, including the possibility of deploying National Guard troops in the area.

As for John's family, they are still reeling from the loss. Bennett urged other parents to prioritize spending quality time with their children, hugging them tightly and letting them know how much they love them.

Man this is just heartbreaking. πŸ€• A 15-year-old life cut short by gun violence? It's like we're stuck in a never-ending nightmare where kids are getting killed left and right. And what really gets me is that John was just trying to get home after trick-or-treating, he wasn't even looking for trouble.

I'm so sorry for his family and the community, it's heartbreaking to think about all the memories they'll never get to make with him. It's like we're living in a world where kids are more likely to die from gun violence than from accidents or diseases. We need to do something about this ASAP, like increase funding for schools that have good gun safety programs and stuff like that.

I'm not going to even try to rationalize why this happened because it doesn't make sense. All I can say is that we need more love and less hate in our world, you know? We need to come together as a community and support each other instead of turning on each other when things go wrong. 🀝

this is just so heartbreaking πŸ€•... 15 years old and already lost his life to senseless violence 🚫 it's like, what even is the point of living if we can't feel safe in our own neighborhoods? πŸ’” chicago needs more than just security measures, it needs a fundamental shift in how we approach gun violence πŸ”„ like, why are kids carrying guns as a form of self-defense? isn't that just gonna make things worse? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ anyway, my heart goes out to john's family and the community he was a part of πŸ’•

πŸ˜” This is so sad πŸ€•. You gotta wonder what just happened before that first shot was fired... like was he in a gang fight or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And poor Selinda Bennett, I can only imagine how she's feeling right now 😭. We should all be trying to make our communities safer for kids like John, you know? 🚫 Less guns and more love and support would probably help a lot πŸ’•. I mean, we're always hearing about gun violence in Chicago, but it's just one kid at a time... it feels like we should be doing something more to prevent these kinds of tragedies πŸ€”.

πŸ€• It's just heartbreaking to think about that poor 15-year-old's life being cut short in such a senseless way. πŸŒͺ️ I mean, can you imagine if your child was taken from you like that? 😱 The fact that a resident heard a dozen shots fired and still managed to get a glimpse of the aftermath is just devastating. And the mom's words about prioritizing family time are so true - it's not just about keeping our kids safe from harm, but also making sure they feel loved and cherished every day. 🌈 The community needs to come together and demand some real change here, you know? We can't keep living in fear of being gunned down on the streets like this is some kind of senseless statistic. πŸ’”

can't believe this is happening again πŸ€• to a kid who was just out having fun on Halloween what's wrong with our society? πŸ˜” should be safe in his own neighborhood, no matter the time of year. I feel so bad for John's family and friends, they must be going through hell right now πŸ’”. we need more than just security measures to fix this problem, we need a real plan to address gun violence and keep our kids safe πŸš«πŸ’•

omg this is so messed up πŸ€• 15 yrs old his whole life was cut short cuz of some dude's stupid gun 🎯 i dont even no what to say the pics of blood on the streets are just too much πŸ’€ its not right that we gotta live in a world where a kid has to worry about being shot while riding his bike to home πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ especially after halloween when u'd think ppl would be more chill πŸ˜” my heart goes out 2 john's fam esp selinda she sounds like an amazing mom πŸ’• i hope the police catch the person responsible and get some justice for john πŸ”Ž

Oh man 😱 this is just so heartbreaking I can barely even think about it without getting all teary eyed 🀧 John was just a teenager living his life, enjoying Halloween with friends and family, and then BAM πŸ’₯ gun violence takes him away in an instant. It's like, what's the point of even having laws if they're not going to be enforced? πŸ€”

And the fact that he pulled out a gun in response... I don't know, man, it just feels like this whole situation is just spiraling out of control πŸ’₯. The community is already dealing with so much trauma and now John's parents have to live with the guilt of knowing their son was killed by another human being πŸ€•.

I feel for Selinda Bennett, she's just lost her entire world in one moment. And that resident who witnessed it all... I don't know how they're going to be able to shake off this feeling of vulnerability 😨. Can we please just talk about doing something different here? How about more community programs and youth services instead of just throwing more guns at the problem πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ?

ugh man... 15 yrs old! that's like, half my age πŸ€• u no wnt a kid on his way home from trick or treattin' get taken away by some dude w/ a gun? it's just plain senseless πŸ™„ chicago needs to do somethin' about dis kinda stuff, can't even let kids ride their bikes without worryin bout bein shot πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸ’” my heart goes out 2 john's fam & his community, prayin for some peace & safety in dat neighborhood πŸ•ŠοΈ

This is just so senseless πŸ€•... 15-year-old John's life cut short on Halloween of all days, it's like the universe is playing a cruel joke πŸ˜”. You gotta wonder what kind of world we're living in where kids are getting shot for no reason πŸ’€. I feel bad for his family and community, they must be going through hell right now πŸ€•. The resident who witnessed the whole thing is totally traumatized and needs some serious support too πŸ˜“. It's just devastating to think about John being on that bike ride, having a good time with friends, and then... πŸ’₯😨. We need to find ways to prevent this kind of violence from happening in our neighborhoods 🌎.
