More than 60 prominent sportspeople call for federal royal commission after Bondi attack

Australia's sports elite are rallying behind a call for a federal royal commission to tackle the country's rising tide of antisemitism, radicalisation, and terrorism. Over 60 prominent athletes, including Olympic legends Dawn Fraser, Ian Thorpe, and Jess Fox, as well as tennis stars Lleyton Hewitt and John Alexander, have joined forces to urge Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to establish a national inquiry into the crisis.

The sports leaders are adamant that this is not just a matter of politics, but a "national crisis" that demands a unified response. The brutal attack on Bondi Beach in October, which claimed the lives of 15 innocent people, has left the country reeling and sparked widespread outrage.

"We call on the Prime Minister and the Australian government to show decisive national leadership by confronting extremism and terrorism in all its forms, without fear or hesitation," the athletes' letter declares. "A royal commission is the most credible and unifying pathway to understanding what went wrong, ensuring accountability, restoring social harmony and taking Australia forward with a meaningful, practical plan of action."

The sports community's united front comes as pressure on the government continues to mount. In recent weeks, over 120 business leaders and public figures have joined an open letter calling for a federal royal commission, while senior Catholic bishops have echoed these sentiments.

However, Albanese has resisted calls for a national inquiry, opting instead for a review of intelligence and law enforcement agencies by former Australian Security and Intelligence Service chief Dennis Richardson. The Prime Minister argues that a federal royal commission would be too time-consuming and wide-ranging.

But the athletes' letter paints a stark picture of the issue at hand: "The safety of our citizens, the integrity of our public spaces, and the values we project as a nation have never mattered more." As the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games approach, Australia's reputation is on the line. Can the government heed the call for urgent action to address this national crisis?

I mean, I think it's kinda ironic that they're calling for a royal commission, 'cause isn't that like, super old-school? 🤔 Like, didn't we learn from our past that commissions can be all talk and no action? 🤑 But at the same time, I get why they wanna do this - like, radicalization and terrorism are serious issues, and maybe a royal commission could bring some much-needed attention to it. 🔥 The thing is, though, what's gonna actually change? Is it just more bureaucratic red tape or something? 🤷‍♂️ And let's be real, the sports community isn't exactly known for being objective... 🏅 I mean, are they just trying to save face because some of their own got hurt in that Bondi Beach attack? 😒

🤯 come on guys, can't they just say it like everyone else? "National crisis" sounds like a bunch of BS if you ask me 😒. What's next, a royal commission about the weird Aussie meat pies that are allegedly ruining our economy 🥩?! Give us some real action and concrete plans instead of just throwing around buzzwords like a bunch of politicians trying to get re-elected 🙄. The fact is, there have been attacks on civilians in Australia before and people were able to put their differences aside and work towards solving the problem 💪. We don't need another useless inquiry to "unify" us, we just need some genuine leadership and a willingness to tackle these issues head-on 🔥.

🏊‍♂️ gotta be real here.. 120+ business leaders & public figures are saying the same thing... a royal commission ain't too much to ask 🤔 when innocent people lose their lives to senseless violence. PM's review of agencies sounds like a bunch of bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo compared to actual concrete action 💪

I think its a super sensible idea for the government to get some experts together to figure out how to tackle this stuff . I mean we've seen what happened at Bondi Beach and it was just heartbreaking, so somethin needs to be done ASAP. The athletes are right, its not just about politics, its about keepin our country safe and protectin our people. A royal commission might take some time but im sure its the best way to get a handle on all this extremism and terrorism . We cant just ignore it or hope it goes away, we need a plan of action and we need it now 🤝💪

omg can u believe all these sports legends are speakin out about antisemitism & radicalization?? its crazy how serious this stuff has gotten in australia 🤯 i mean, 15 ppl dead at bondi beach is just heartbreaking... the fact that athletes from diff sports r comin together like this shows we shouldnt be divided on this issue 🌟

im all for a royal commission tho! im tired of politicians just talkin about the problem & not doin enough to address it. it sounds like they wanna give some kinda watered-down review instead, which isnt gonna cut it 👎 i hope pm albanese listens 2 these ppl 'cause australia's rep is on the line... the brisbane 2032 olympics better be somethin we can proudly say we hosted 🏅
