Council Member Julie Menin, representing Upper East Side, has secured enough support to secure a spot as city council's next speaker, beating out fellow contender Crystal Hudson. According to reports, Menin is perceived as a moderate voice who can function as a counterbalance on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's progressive agenda.

Menin expressed gratitude and humbled by her colleagues' trust in leading the Council. This election marks an essential milestone for Mamdani's administration as city council speaker has significant influence over legislation and budget management, amounting to nearly $120 billion annually.

Mamdani did not publicly express support or concerns regarding Menin's chances; however, Menin was seen by Hudson as having broad backing from influential unions. This stance is perceived by former Council member Carlina Rivera, who stated that Menin has secured a strong coalition of supporters, rendering her victory all but certain.
