Mayor Mamdani taps longtime public servant to lead NYC parks

Mayor Zohran Mamdani's selection of Tricia Shimamura as the new head of New York City's parks department marks a significant shift in his efforts to revitalize the beleaguered system. With over 30,000 acres of parkland and countless playgrounds, sports courts, and community gardens, city officials acknowledge that these spaces have become increasingly vital in providing affordable access to green areas for families and individuals.

According to Mamdani, parks are more than just places for leisure activities – they serve as vibrant hubs of creativity and community engagement. "These aren't just places of rest and relaxation; they're centers of creativity, places of community where all people come together," the mayor stated during a recent announcement at High Bridge Park in the Bronx.

Shimamura, a seasoned public servant with over two decades of experience in government and non-profit work, brings a wealth of knowledge to the role. Most recently, she served as Manhattan borough commissioner for the city's Department of Parks and Recreation, overseeing park operations across the borough. Her impressive resume also includes stints as a social worker, senior roles in city and federal government, and a stint as director of government relations at Columbia University.

Mayor Mamdani praised Shimamura's dedication to working-class New Yorkers, noting that she "has fought tirelessly for working people" throughout her career. Under his administration, parks funding will be boosted by at least 1% of the city's budget, a promise aimed at reversing years of stagnation under previous administrations.

Outgoing commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa was also recognized by Mamdani for her decades-long service to the department and her trailblazing status as the first Latina to hold the role. The mayor acknowledged that while parks funding has been anemic in recent years, his administration is committed to making a meaningful impact on this critical city resource.

I'm so hyped about Tricia Shimamura taking over the parks department πŸŒ³πŸ’š! I mean, it's about time we saw some serious change and investment in our green spaces 🀞. As someone who loves spending time outdoors with their fam, it means the world to me that there's someone on board who genuinely cares about making these areas accessible for all 🌟. Plus, 1% boost in funding is a big deal πŸ€‘. I'm excited to see what Shimamura and Mayor Mamdani have in store for us!

😊 I'm loving this new head for NYC's parks! She sounds like a total rockstar πŸ’ͺ, and it's so great that Mayor Mamdani is finally giving the department some much-needed love ❀️. Boosting funding by 1% of the budget is a huge deal – let's hope it makes a real difference on the ground 🌳. And kudos to Iris Rodriguez-Rosa for paving the way for more diversity in leadership πŸ™Œ, that's something we should all be celebrating! πŸ’š

idk about this whole Tricia Shimamura thing πŸ€”... all these new parks and green spaces sound nice and all, but what's the real deal here? Is it just a PR stunt to make Mayor Mamdani look all good-guy-ish? πŸ€‘ i mean, a 1% boost in funding is not exactly gonna break the bank. and what about the actual people working on these parks? are they just gonna be replaced by some new face like Tricia Shimamura? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

and can we talk about how all this revolves around "community engagement" and "creativity"? sounds like a bunch of buzzwords to me πŸ˜’. is it really that hard for cities to prioritize green spaces and make them accessible to everyone? 🌳... or am i just too skeptical? πŸ€”

I gotta say, I'm kinda skeptical about this whole parks funding boost thing πŸ€”. 1% might not seem like much, but what's the plan for actually making it happen? We've seen promises of revitalization after revitalization, and yet the actual work on the ground hasn't always matched the hype. Still, props to Mayor Mamdani for recognizing the importance of parks, and Shimamura's got some solid credentials πŸ’Ό. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out πŸ•°οΈ.

omg i cant wait 2 see what kinda magic tricia shimamura brings 2 our citys park system!! πŸŒ³πŸ’š Mayor mamdani's all about community & creativity which im all 4, and w/ her expertise & leadership we might just see those parks get the love they deserve πŸ’–. Plus, its awesome that she reps working-class new yorkers - that's real change i can get behind! πŸ’ͺ

omg did you know there's this amazing hiking spot near my place in NJ where they have these gorgeous wildflowers every spring 🌼🏞️ i mean, the colors are just insane! it's like someone poured a box of crayons all over the hillside πŸ˜‚ but seriously, it's one of those hidden gems that's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. anyway, back to the parks thing... yeah, 1% boost is cool and all, but have they thought about making the playgrounds more accessible for people with disabilities? πŸ€”

I think it's awesome that Mayor Mamdani is putting more money into our parks πŸŒ³πŸ’Έ. I mean, I've lived in New York City for a while now and I know how important these green spaces are – especially with all the crazy traffic we have here πŸš—πŸ˜©. It's great to hear that Tricia Shimamura is on board to make sure everything runs smoothly and that she's all about working-class people πŸ‘.

I've taken my kids to High Bridge Park a few times, it's such a beautiful spot in the Bronx πŸŒ†. I love how Mayor Mamdani sees parks as more than just places for picnics – they're like community hubs where you can make friends and stuff 😊. Fingers crossed that this new initiative will actually make a difference and we'll start seeing some real change soon 🀞.

I'm not totally convinced about this whole "parks are hubs of creativity" thing πŸ€”... I mean, yeah, they're super important for families and all that, but let's be real, some of these playgrounds and sports courts can get pretty sketchy at night πŸŒƒ. And don't even get me started on the maintenance – it's always something with the budget πŸ€‘. But hey, if Tricia Shimamura can bring in some fresh ideas and get more funding, that's a win for me πŸ’ͺ! The 1% boost is a good start, but we need to see some actual action πŸ”„... Fingers crossed this admin delivers!

πŸŒ³πŸ˜’ I mean, who doesn't love a good park makeover? It's not like it's just a PR move or anything... Mayor Mamdani finally decided to do something about the parks department, and Tricia Shimamura is in charge now. πŸ™„ She seems nice, but we'll see how this all plays out. I guess it's about time someone got the funding boost those parks so desperately needed. πŸ’Έ At least Iris Rodriguez-Rosa gets some recognition for her dedication – always good to see some long-overdue love for trailblazers! πŸ‘ The Bronx is gonna get a facelift, and I'm kinda excited to see what all the fuss is about... πŸ€”

so glad to see some positive change comin thru πŸŒžπŸ’š i mean, 30k acres of parkland? that's a lotta space for people to chill and be creative! and shimamura seems like the real deal - all about community engagement and makin it accessible 4 everyone 🀝 her experience is insane btw, 2 decades in gov and non-profit work? that's some serious know-how πŸ’ͺ also super cool dat mamdani's boostin funding by 1% - gotta admit, that's a pretty big deal πŸ“ˆ and iris rodriguez-rosa gets the love too... trailblazing is everything πŸ’–

I gotta say, I'm still skeptical about all this hype around green spaces πŸŒ³πŸ’š. Don't get me wrong, they're nice and all, but are we really gonna make parks the hubs of creativity and community engagement? It sounds like a bunch of feel-good buzzwords to me πŸ€”. What's the real plan here? Are we just throwing more money at it (1% boost in budget, yeah right) without actually fixing the underlying issues? I mean, what about maintenance costs, insurance, and liability concerns? Don't wanna be the one stuck holding the bag when things go wrong πŸ’ΈπŸ˜¬.

man I'm still trying to process how much of a change Shimamura's gonna bring to the parks department 🌳πŸ’ͺ. I mean don't get me wrong, it's awesome that Mamdani's finally bringing in some fresh blood after all those years of neglect, but what about all the little things like actual maintenance and funding for the community gardens? I've been to High Bridge Park myself and it was literally falling apart last time I went πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. How's she gonna fix that and still make parks hubs of creativity? seems kinda contradictory to me πŸ˜•.

OMG, I'm so stoked about Tricia Shimamura taking over the head of New York City's parks department!!! πŸ™Œ She's literally the perfect person for the job! With her experience and dedication to working-class folks, she's gonna make a HUGE difference in revamping those parks. I mean, it's not just about having a pretty face or something (although she does look amazing πŸ˜‰), it's about making sure everyone has access to green spaces where they can hang out with their families and friends. Mayor Mamdani's all about community engagement and creativity, and Shimamura's on board with that! Plus, the fact that she's a total rockstar in her own right (I mean, decades of experience and social work under her belt) is just, like, whoa... Can't wait to see what changes she brings! πŸŒ³πŸ’š

OMG, I'm so hyped about Tricia Shimamura taking over the parks department πŸŽ‰! Like, it's super important for our cities to have accessible green spaces, especially with all the crazy stuff we're dealing with in life. The mayor is totally on point with his plan to boost funding by 1% - that's a big deal, fam πŸ’Έ. And Iris Rodriguez-Rosa getting recognition for her trailblazing status as the first Latina commissioner? Goals, am I right?! πŸ™Œ

omg, I'm so stoked about Tricia Shimamura being chosen as the new head of NYC's parks department πŸŒ³πŸŽ‰! As a student, I can relate to how important it is to have access to green spaces that are actually well-maintained and safe for us kids to hang out in after school. It's so cool that Mayor Mamdani sees parks as more than just places for chillin' – he thinks they're hubs of creativity and community engagement! 🀩

I'm also loving the fact that Shimamura has been working with low-income communities for ages, fighting for their rights and interests. That kind of dedication is exactly what we need in our city's leadership positions. And yay for boosting park funding by at least 1% of the city's budget – it's a step in the right direction towards making our parks amazing again πŸš€!

I'm so done with these new park directors πŸ™„. Like, what's next? They're gonna make all the playgrounds "vibrant hubs of creativity" and expect me to shell out extra cash for a latte in exchange for some Instagrammable green space πŸ€‘. I get that mayor Mamdani thinks it's cool, but can't we just stick with the good ol' fashioned park-and-recreate stuff? It feels like these new fancy-schmancy park heads are more worried about their "community engagement" metrics than actually fixing the broken infrastructure and green spaces in the first place πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. And don't even get me started on the 1% budget increase... like, hello, that's not exactly a game-changer πŸ’Έ. Give me some real progress over fancy PR speak any day πŸ˜’.

🌳 I'm loving this move by Mayor Mamdani! It's time for New York City's parks department to get some much-needed TLC. With 30k+ acres of parkland and so many community gardens, it's crazy how neglected they've been. Shimamura seems like the perfect person to shake things up - all that experience under her belt is exactly what this department needs. 🀩 Plus, boosting funding by 1% is a good start, but I hope they're planning for more long-term changes too! The fact that Iris Rodriguez-Rosa is being recognized for her dedication to the department and the city is amazing. It's time for some fresh faces and new ideas in our parks! πŸ’š

I'm so hyped about Tricia Shimamura taking over the parks department 🀩! She's got the skills and experience to really make a difference πŸ’ͺ. I love how Mayor Mamdani is pushing for more funding and recognition for the amazing work that's already being done by people like Iris Rodriguez-Rosa πŸ‘. And can we talk about how awesome it is that we're getting more green spaces in the city? 30,000 acres is insane 🌳! I'm so down to see what Shimamura brings to the table and how she's gonna make these parks hubs of creativity and community engagement πŸ’•. Let's get ready for some serious park revival in NYC! πŸŽ‰

🀯 So I'm thinking what's next? Are they gonna fix the playgrounds or just paint some new murals at High Bridge Park? 🎨 Like, don't get me wrong, it's great that Mayor Mamdani is trying to boost funding for parks but we need to see some real action on the ground. All this sounds like a nice PR stunt to me... πŸ€”
