Matildas sweep New Zealand in Adelaide as Sam Kerr makes long-awaited return

Australia's women's national team, known as the Matildas, have boosted their confidence ahead of next year's Women's Asian Cup with a convincing 2-0 win over New Zealand in Adelaide. The result was the perfect tonic for the side after an underwhelming year, and it marked a welcome return to form for star striker Sam Kerr.

Kerr made her highly anticipated comeback in this game, starting alongside Hayley Raso, who struck twice to seal the victory. The 18-year-old forward had been in impressive form throughout the tournament, and her pace and skill on the pitch proved too much for New Zealand's defense to handle.

The Kiwis, meanwhile, were poor value for their opponents. They offered little attacking threat, despite having a few half-chances, and relied heavily on their goalkeeper to keep them in the game. Their midfield was particularly weak, with Emily Van Egmond and Alanna Kennedy dominating possession without being able to create any real opportunities.

Despite New Zealand's lack of creativity, they did have a few scares at times. A goal from Kaitlyn Torpey would have given them hope, but it sailed wide of the post just minutes after another chance had been spurned by Caitlin Foord. Indiah-Paige Riley was lively down the wing, and Grace Wisnewski caused problems for Australia's defense in the box.

However, the Matildas were always in control, with Kerr showing flashes of her old self throughout the game. She created many opportunities for her fellow forwards, including Raso, who scored both goals to give his team a commanding lead. The second goal was particularly impressive, as Raso's persistence paid off after a curling corner from Steph Catley had appeared to be heading straight into the bottom of the net.

The win marked a significant improvement in form for Kerr, who has been absent from the side due to injury for much of this year. Her return has brought a new level of excitement and expectation to the team, but she seemed to settle back into her old rhythm with ease.

For New Zealand, this was an opportunity to test their mettle against one of the top teams in the world. While they did create some chances, they ultimately fell short. The result is a welcome confidence boost for the Matildas ahead of next year's Asian Cup, but it also serves as a reminder that there will be tough challenges ahead if they are to succeed at the tournament.

omg i'm so hyped 4 sam kerr!!!! she's literally the queen of aussie soccer ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ can't believe she's back in form after that injury 2 years ago ๐Ÿคฏ anywayz, Matildas are gonna CRUSH it @ women's asian cup next year ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผโค๏ธ raso is on fire too!! ๐Ÿ˜ love how aussie defense is holding strong ๐Ÿ™Œ and btw, Kaitlyn Torpey is underrated lol ๐Ÿ˜‚

Ugh, I'm so hyped for Sam Kerr right now lol! ๐Ÿคฉ The girl is a total legend on the pitch and it's amazing to see her back in form. That 2-0 win over New Zealand was like a shot of adrenaline straight into my heart ๐Ÿ’–. I was a bit worried when she wasn't playing due to injury, but she definitely makes up for lost time now ๐Ÿ˜….

I mean, what can you say about Hayley Raso's performance? ๐Ÿค” That kid is like a gazelle on the pitch, dodging and weaving around defenders with ease ๐ŸŒฟ. And Steph Catley's corner kick was like magic โœจ. I'm seriously so glad to see these players working together seamlessly again.

But at the same time, I have to feel for New Zealand ๐Ÿค•. They gave it their all but just couldn't seem to catch a break ๐Ÿ’”. I mean, who hasn't been in those shoes, right? ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's all about bouncing back and learning from your mistakes, and hopefully they'll come out even stronger next time.

For Australia, this is like the ultimate confidence boost ๐ŸŒŸ. They've got their star player back and now it's just a matter of putting everything together for the Asian Cup. I'm seriously stoked to see what they can do ๐Ÿ’ฅ!

OMG ๐Ÿ˜ just watched the Matildas crush NZ 2-0 in Adelaide ๐Ÿ™Œ and I'm totally hyped for their Asian Cup chances! ๐Ÿ’ฅ Sam Kerr is a BEAST ๐Ÿ”ฅ back from injury and it's clear she's still got that magic โœจ Hayley Raso too, 18 and on fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ. NZ just couldn't keep up with the pace ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ and I gotta give it to them for giving it a go ๐Ÿ˜Š but the Matildas are looking strong ๐Ÿ’ช can't wait to see what they do at the Asian Cup next year ๐ŸŽ‰

So that was a nice win for Australia's Matildas ๐Ÿ™Œ! It's great to see Sam Kerr back in form after being out for most of the year ๐Ÿ’ช. I think it's fair to say New Zealand got served ๐Ÿ˜…, they just couldn't create enough chances and their defense was all over the place.

On a positive note, Hayley Raso is on fire right now ๐Ÿ”ฅ! She looks like she's finally clicked with the team and is a threat to any opponent. And Steph Catley's corner kick for the second goal was pure magic โšฝ๏ธ!

For Australia, this win is just what they needed to boost their confidence ahead of next year's Asian Cup ๐Ÿ†. They've got some tough matches coming up but if they can keep playing like this, I think they've got a real shot at winning it all.

But let's not get too ahead of ourselves ๐Ÿ˜Ž. There are still plenty of challenges ahead and we don't want to jinx them just yet. Still, with Kerr back in the mix and Raso on fire, the Matildas are looking like a force to be reckoned with ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

that's what i'm talking about ๐Ÿ™Œ kerr's back and she's killing it ๐Ÿ’ช raso was on fire too, those two are unstoppable ๐Ÿ”ฅ kiwis just didn't bring their A-game, poor value for the money โฐ got to feel for new zealand though, they're always tough opponents ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm not buying it ๐Ÿค”. Just because they beat New Zealand 2-0 doesn't mean they're ready for the Asian Cup ๐ŸŽ‰. I mean, Sam Kerr's back and all, but is she still the same player who's been injured for half the year? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I'm not convinced. And let's be real, their form has been all over the place this year ๐Ÿ˜ด. One win doesn't make up for all the losses they've had. They need to keep working hard and proving themselves if they want to take on the best teams in Asia ๐Ÿ’ช.

OMG u guyz! 2-0 win 4 Australia is like the best thing 2 happen 2 them all yr ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’ช Matildas are back on track now & I'm so hyped 2 c them do well in next year's Asian Cup! Sam Kerr was absolutely ๐Ÿ”ฅ as always ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ”ดโ€โ™€๏ธ Raso 2 scored 2 goals & Hayley was on fire down the wing ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ‘. NZ just didn't bring their A game & it shows in dis result ๐Ÿ˜ New Zealand needs 2 step up their game if they wanna compete w/ the best teams out there ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm thinking that Aussies are on fire right now ๐Ÿ˜…. That 2-0 win over Kiwis was super convincing. I mean, who didn't see it coming? Matildas have been working hard and it paid off. Sam Kerr is back in the game and she's looking more like her old self than ever ๐Ÿ’ช.

Now, let's be real, New Zealand didn't stand a chance ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. They were poor value for money if you ask me. Their midfield was weak and they just couldn't create any real chances. I feel bad for them, but at the same time, you can't deny that Matildas played some awesome football.

I do think it's great to see Hayley Raso coming out of nowhere and scoring two goals ๐Ÿ’ฅ. She's 18 and already making a name for herself in the football world. Australia's youth is looking super promising ๐Ÿคž.

Next year's Asian Cup can't come soon enough, I'm hyped ๐Ÿ˜†. Matildas are looking like they're gonna take it by storm. Bring on the competition! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

I'm not surprised they won 2-0 lol ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. The Kiwis were always gonna get thrashed by Australia, I mean, have you seen their squad? ๐Ÿ™„ They don't stand a chance against the Matildas! Sam Kerr is back and she's still got it ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. New Zealand's defense was completely out of shape and they couldn't even create a decent attacking threat ๐Ÿคฏ. It's like they thought they could just show up and win, but girl, no ๐Ÿ˜‚. The result will definitely give the Matildas some confidence going into next year's Asian Cup, but let's be real, it's not gonna be easy for them either ๐Ÿค”.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ Just saw that a massive fire is raging outta control in Western Australia... been burning for days ๐Ÿš’

Omg what a game lol! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Matildas totally destroyed them 2-0 ๐Ÿ’ช I'm so stoked Sam Kerr is back in the lineup ๐ŸŽ‰ her skills are insane again! Hayley Raso's goals were sick too ๐Ÿ‘ can't wait for the Asian Cup next year ๐Ÿคฉ New Zealand just got schooled ๐Ÿ˜ณ

lol @ NZ's defense, they must've thought they were playing some kind of chess match against Australia ๐Ÿงฎ๐Ÿ˜‚. seriously though, Hayley Raso is on fire! 2 goals in this game and I'm not surprised she was a threat all tournament long. the Matildas looked solid as a rock out there, while New Zealand just couldn't seem to get anything going ๐Ÿ’ก Sam Kerr's back and she's causing problems like old times ๐Ÿ‘€. gotta be good for their chances at the Asian Cup next year ๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ† just watched the Matildas thrash NZ 2-0 and i gotta say it's great to see Sam Kerr back in form ๐Ÿคฉ she was unstoppable out there! Hayley Raso looked sharp too, two goals and he's off to a flyer ๐Ÿ”ฅ gotta give credit to Australia's defense though, they kept New Zealand at bay pretty easily ๐Ÿ™Œ anyway, this win gives the Matildas some much-needed confidence ahead of next year's Asian Cup... lets see if they can take it all the way! ๐Ÿ‘ [https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11...in-big-over-new-zealand-in-adelaide/12143964)

I'm loving how confident the Matildas look right now ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ they really needed that win to boost their morale ahead of next year's Asian Cup. Sam Kerr was on fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, I mean who else can create scoring opportunities like she does? And Hayley Raso is proving herself as a top-notch striker ๐Ÿ’ช. New Zealand just couldn't keep up with the Matildas' pace and skill, it's like they were stuck in neutral ๐Ÿš—. The Matildas are definitely looking like the team to beat now ๐Ÿ˜Ž.

๐Ÿ™„ ugh just read about australia's matildas 2-0 win over new zealand in adelaide... it was like they were born yesterday! sam kerr came off injured and suddenly became a superstar again? okay, i get it, she's talented and all, but what happened to the rest of the team? hayley raso scoring 2 goals out of nowhere too lol. anywayz, glad they won, but it wasnt exactly a shocker... they just played like they always do ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
