Manchester City sign USA midfielder Sam Coffey for £600,000

Manchester City has made a major signing in their pursuit of Women's Super League (WSL) glory, as they've welcomed USA midfielder Sam Coffey to the squad. The 27-year-old has joined on a three-and-a-half-year contract with a reported transfer fee of around £600,000.

Coffey is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and boasts an impressive pedigree. She's made 42 appearances for the USA national team and has played almost 100 games for Portland Thorns, helping them win the 2022 NWSL Championship title.

The signing comes after City made several attempts to sign Coffey last summer, only to be rebuffed by her current club. However, it appears that the Blues' persistence has paid off, as they've now secured a major coup in their pursuit of a first league title in 10 years.

City's manager Andree Jeglertz is building a squad capable of not only winning the WSL but competing in next season's Women's Champions League. Coffey will provide options in midfield, especially with key Japan international Yui Hasegawa set to join up with her national team for the Asia Cup in March.

The addition of Coffey strengthens City's position at the top of the league table and cements their status as serious contenders for this season's title. With a depth of quality now rivaling some of the best teams in Europe, it remains to be seen whether they can navigate the challenges ahead and bring silverware back to Manchester.

omg i'm so hyped about sam coffey joining manchester city 🤩 she's literally one of the best defensive midfielders in the world!! i was thinking city would sign her last summer but i guess they wanted to try again 🤔 either way, this is gonna be huge for the team and maybe even bring that first wsl title their way 💪

🚨💪 so yeah i'm lowkey hyped about sam coffey joining manchester city's squad 🤩 she sounds like a total beast on the pitch and having her on board is gonna give them some serious competition in the wsl 🔥 plus it's dope to see a female player bringing some that level of skill & experience to the league 💁‍♀️ i feel like they're building something special over there 🏆

OMG 🤯 I'm literally SOOO hyped about this news!!! 🚀 Sam Coffey is like, a total boss on the pitch!!! 💪 I mean, 42 caps for the USA national team? Almost 100 games for Portland Thorns? That's some serious skill right there! 😍 And to think they were trying to sign her last summer and she said no... lol what a waste 🙄 I'm so glad City didn't give up and got their man/woman (I guess?) now they're gonna dominate the WSL for sure 💃🏼💅🏻 Can you even imagine Andree Jeglertz's team being the ones to take it all home? I. Am. Here. For. It!!! 🎉

🤔 I'm loving this move by City! They've been chasing Sam Coffey for ages and it's so satisfying to see them finally land her 🎉. That woman is a defensive midfield beast, and I think she'll be a game-changer for the team. Andree Jeglertz has done an amazing job recruiting talent from around the world - first Yui Hasegawa, now Sam Coffey... it's like they're assembling a super squad 💪! Can't wait to see how they all gel on the pitch and take on the best teams in Europe 🏆. The question is, can they handle the pressure and stay focused over the course of the season? That's what separates the champions from the contenders... 😉

🤩 just think about it... Sam Coffey is basically a game changer for City! They've been chasing her for ages and finally got her on board. Now they're one step closer to that WSL title 🏆 and with Yui Hasegawa joining the squad, they're literally looking unstoppable 🚀. Andree Jeglertz has done an amazing job bringing in talented players like this... what's next? 🤔

I'm like "yes" 🤩 this is gonna be lit for City! They need someone with Coffey's skillset and experience to take them to the next level... no wait, I mean what if they're overpaying? £600k is steep, even for a player of her caliber. She should've gone to Liverpool instead, they'd've been better off getting her at that price lol 😂. But seriously though, Coffey's addition does strengthen City's chances, and Andree Jeglertz seems like the right coach to bring it all together... unless she makes some mistakes? 🤔

🤔 This is like life, you know? We're always trying to sign someone who's already on another team... or in this case, a talented player from across the ocean 💕. But persistence pays off sometimes, right? It's like when you keep hitting refresh on your favorite website, and finally, it loads up again 😂. Manchester City just proved that with Sam Coffey joining their squad. And let me tell you, it feels good to see someone get what they deserve after all the hard work and dedication 💪. It's a reminder that we should never give up on our dreams or goals 🌟.

this is awesome news 🤩 for manchester city fans! they really stepped up their game by signing sam coffey 💪. she's got an amazing track record with both the usa national team and portland thorns, so i think she'll be a game changer in midfield 🔥. it's also great to see Jeglertz's vision coming together - having yui hasegawa join up with her japan team for the asia cup in march is a huge boost too 🎉. now we just gotta wait and see how they perform this season... fingers crossed! 🤞

Wow 😮 she's like a superstar midfielder ! 600k is a lot of money but i guess coffey is worth it , she has so much experience and skills . wonder if jeglertz will make any changes in the team now that coffey is on board , could lead to some major wins 💪

omg u guys!!! 🤯 i'm literally shaking with excitement over this signing!!! sam coffey is like THE QUEEN OF DEFENSE 🇺🇸 she's a total game changer for man city... 3.5 yrs is a long time and that fee is nothing considering how much she'll bring to the table 💸 i mean, the fact they tried last summer and got rejected must've made them think 'okay we need to step up our game' 😅 and boy did they ever!!! the blues are finally on track to get that league title this yr 🎉 and with jugelrtz at the helm, they're gonna be UNSTOPPABLE 💪 yui hasegawa is gonna have a field day alongside coffey 🤩 fingers crossed for city fans everywhere 🙏

OMG, I'm so hyped about this signing!!! 🤩 Sam Coffey is literally one of the best defensive midfielders out there and her skills will definitely elevate Manchester City's squad. But, I wonder what made them offer a 3.5-year contract with £600k fee... was it a lot of pressure from their board to sign her? 💸

And I'm curious about Andree Jeglertz's strategy now that they've got Coffey on board... will she be playing alongside Yui Hasegawa in the midfield, or is there more depth to the team than we know? 🤔 Also, what's their plan for next season's WCL - do you think they can make it past the quarterfinals with this new squad? 😬

🏆 I think this is HUGE news for Manchester City and their Women's Super League ambitions 🤩. They've been persistent in signing top talent, and Sam Coffey is one of the best defensive midfielders out there 💪. I'm loving how Andree Jeglertz is building a squad that can compete with the best teams in Europe 👏. The addition of Coffey will definitely give them an edge in the league table 📈. Now we just have to see if they can pull off that first WSL title and make some noise in the Champions League too 💥!

🤔 just thinkin about all these amazing female players comin into the WSL and its gonna be interesting to see how this all plays out 📊 now that mann city got sam coffey, it's like they're sayin "hey we serious 'bout winnin a league title" 💪 but can they keep up with the likes of arsenal & chelsea? ⏰ only time'll tell

I mean, what's next? They're gonna start putting AI-powered footballers on the pitch too? I'm not saying Sam Coffey isn't a great midfielder and all, but do we really need another layer of tech messing up our beautiful game? I swear, every time I see some new 'innovation' in sports, I just get this nagging feeling that it's gonna be a disaster waiting to happen 🤔💻

I'm so stoked about this signing lol 😆! Manchester City's got an amazing team already but adding Sam Coffey is like getting a masterclass midfielder 🤯. I mean, 42 caps for the USA national team? That's huge! And her record with Portland Thorns? Unbeatable 💪.

I love how persistent City were - they didn't give up on her last summer and now look what happened 🙌. Andree Jeglertz is building a squad that can go toe-to-toe with the best, no doubt about it 👊. This signing will definitely shake things up in the WSL and make City an even bigger force to be reckoned with.

The addition of Yui Hasegawa next month will be key too - those two midfielders will create some magic 🎩. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a title win this season! 💫🔴

Here's a simple diagram to show how good this signing is 📝:

Can't wait to see how this all plays out! 🤔

this is a big win for Manchester City 🙌... i mean, its not just about getting someone who's good at their job, its more about bringing home that trophy, you know? so hopefully Coffey can help 'em achieve that first WSL title in 10 years 💪. the addition of her experience and skill is definitely going to take City's midfield game to a whole new level 🔥... now its just a matter of whether they can keep up with all these other top teams in Europe 😅.

idk if i'm excited about sam coffey joining manchester city 🤔. on one hand, she's got an amazing pedigree and is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world... that's gotta be a good thing for the team 💪. but at the same time, £600k seems like a pretty penny to me... maybe they could've gotten someone better with that kind of cash 🤑. and let's not forget, they already have yui hasegawa joining up with her national team in march... does this mean coffey is just gonna sit on the bench for half the season? 🤔👀

This is just like the 2018 World Cup when England made that crazy bid to sign Megan Rapinoe... just kidding sorta 🤣. Seriously though, it's like the Tories always saying "we need more investment" but City just went out and did it anyway 🤑. Andree Jeglertz must be like Jeremy Corbyn - all talk about equality and fairness but actually goes out and gets the best players 💪. I mean, £600k is a lot of dosh, especially for a transfer fee... reminds me of when Corbyn said we should "take back control" from big money in football 🤑. Anyway, it's gonna be a real barn burner this season with City at the top and all that drama 😏. Can't wait to see how they balance wages and squad morale like some of those big European teams 💸.

OMG, I'm beyond excited about this signing!!! 😍 Sam Coffey is like, super talented and has already proven herself on the big stage with the US national team 🇺🇸. It's no surprise that top clubs like City are eager to snatch her up, but I'm glad they managed to make it happen! 💪 Andree Jeglertz knows what he's doing, building a solid squad for WSL and Champions League - this is gonna be so interesting to watch 📺. The fact that she'll provide depth in midfield is a huge plus, especially with Yui Hasegawa joining up next month 🤞. Now, can City finally bring home that title? 💥
