Man in Rikers custody dies after being taken to hospital, officials say

Rikers Custody Detainee Dies After Medical Episode at NYC Jails, Officials Say

A 38-year-old man, Edwin Ramos, died overnight while in custody at the Rikers Island jails following a medical episode. The incident occurred around 12:05 a.m. when a guard discovered Ramos in distress in a bathroom at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center and provided him with aid. He was subsequently taken to the Rikers clinic before being transported to a nearby hospital.

Ramos had been awaiting a plea deal on an attempted burglary charge from August, which he faced for an incident that occurred in Brooklyn in July. The Legal Aid Society, his representation, reported that Ramos' father learned of his son's death while attending court, whereas his counsel was informed through the press, sparking criticism from the organization.

The Department of Correction, led by Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie, has issued a statement expressing their "deepest sympathies" to Ramos' loved ones and emphasizing that the care of all facility residents is their top priority. This marks the 13th detainee death at Rikers this year, surpassing the number of fatalities for the entire previous year.

An investigation into Ramos' death has been launched by authorities, who will also report the incident as required. The Legal Aid Society has called on officials to disclose details about his death to family members, loved ones, and counsel, labeling the situation "disgraceful" and "unacceptable".

๐Ÿ˜’ another one bites the dust at Rikers... 38 years young, who gets to live that long in a place designed for punishment? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ The system's got some serious issues, but I guess this is just another way of saying 'we're doing everything right' ๐Ÿ’”. And can we talk about how the Legal Aid Society is getting played here? ๐Ÿ™„ Their rep getting info through the press while his dad finds out at court is just shady. Maybe they should've done what everyone else does in crisis situations... apologize and release deets to loved ones ASAP ๐Ÿคž. 13 detentions this year already, it's like Rikers is trying to set a new record for 'worst place to get arrested' ๐Ÿ†

This is just getting crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฉ, like how many people gotta die in these places? 13 this year already? That's insane! And what's up with all these deaths happening when they're supposed to be waiting for some kinda plea deal or trial? It feels like nobody really cares about the ppl who are stuck in there unless somethin' bad happens. The Legal Aid Society is right tho, it's time for officials to come clean about what went down and give the fam some answers. This whole thing just reeks of neglect ๐Ÿšฎ

omg u can't believe what's happening at rikers island 1 detainee dies in custody after a medical episode & now they're trying to cover it up?? like how is this even possible?? family members of edwin Ramos are being held in the dark about what really happened to him. it's just so wrong. the legal aid society is speaking truth to power here. we need more accountability not less. rikers island has been a disaster for years now & it's only getting worse. can't they see that the system is broken??

just heard about this dude dyin in rikers ๐Ÿ˜” what's goin on over there?? like 13 deaths already and it's only feb lol how many more gotta die before somethin changes?? ๐Ÿคฌ the fact that his dad found out while he was in court is straight up cruel, should be family first, not court ๐Ÿšซ anyway, hopefully they get to the bottom of this and actually do somethin about it ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค• this is just heartbreaking another life lost behind bars it's crazy how many ppl are dyin at rikers this yr 13 is a lot & its not like they're even gettin help out there ๐Ÿš‘. Ramos' dad found out thru court, that's wild imagine the shock he must've gotten ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. Legal aid's all right to be mad tho, it's unfair they had to find out thru press instead of gettin straight info from officials. hopefully the investigation gets to the bottom of this & changes some things at rikers ๐Ÿคž

OMG u guys rikers is literally killing ppl rn ๐Ÿคฏ this dude just died after a medical episode in a bathroom lol what kinda care is that?? they shouldve had better trained staff on site 24/7 no way the dept of correction can be serious about their "top priority" claim after another detainee dies under their watch ๐Ÿ’” my heart goes out to ramos' fam and friends this is just sickening ๐Ÿ˜ก

Ugh ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ, this is just getting out of hand ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. 13 deaths at Rikers already this year? That's just insane! ๐Ÿ’ฅ And they're still saying their top priority is facility care, but really it sounds like a whole lot more than that to me ๐Ÿ‘€. What about the mental health support, medical care, and overall living conditions? We can't just gloss over these issues and expect everything to magically get better ๐Ÿ™„.

And can you believe they're investigating this as an "incident" and not actually trying to figure out how it could have been prevented ๐Ÿค”? I mean, come on, we've had these systemic problems for years and now someone dies and suddenly everyone's all like "oh, let's launch an investigation" ๐Ÿ”. Meanwhile, the real questions still remain unanswered ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

And what about the fact that the Legal Aid Society was only informed through the press? That's just cruel ๐Ÿ’”. This guy's dad had to find out about his son's death at court... can you imagine?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐Ÿค” I'm shocked to hear about another detainee dying at Rikers Island. 13 deaths this year is crazy. Can we get some more info on what happened to Edwin Ramos? Was he pre-med or did they miss any red flags? ๐Ÿš‘ The fact that his dad found out about the death from court and not from his lawyers sounds super messed up. The Legal Aid Society deserves better. What's the holdup on getting those family members the answers they deserve? ๐Ÿ’”

OMG ๐Ÿ˜” just heard about Edwin's tragic passing... so sad ๐Ÿ’” my heart goes out to his fam ๐Ÿค•. How could this happen in a place meant to help ppl get back on their feet? ๐Ÿ˜ค 13 deaths already this year at Rikers is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿคฏ. Can't even imagine the pain & grief he must've been going through before... ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ˜• I hope authorities take this seriously & make sure justice is served ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค• The tragic demise of Edwin Ramos at Rikers Island jails is a disturbing example of the systemic issues plaguing our correctional system. It's utterly disheartening that he succumbed to a medical episode while in custody, underlining the pressing need for improved healthcare facilities and staff training within these institutions ๐Ÿš‘.

As we mourn this loss, it's essential to acknowledge the egregious delays in disclosing vital information regarding Ramos' death to his loved ones and counsel. The Legal Aid Society's characterization of this situation as "disgraceful" and "unacceptable" rings all too true, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability within our justice system ๐Ÿ’”.

The Department of Correction's statement, while offering condolences, appears insufficient in addressing the root causes of these preventable deaths ๐Ÿค. It's imperative that we prioritize the well-being of individuals behind bars, ensuring they receive adequate medical attention and care, lest we perpetuate a cycle of tragedy and despair ๐Ÿ’€.

OMG u gotta think, 13 deaths in one year is crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I mean, I know it's a complex issue with lots of factors but its still tragic. They need to make sure they're doing everything possible to prevent these episodes from happening. Like, what if someone had known about the medical episode sooner? Could it have been prevented? ๐Ÿค”

And the fact that his dad found out at court and not through the authorities is just awful ๐Ÿ˜ญ. The Legal Aid Society is right, its only fair they should be told ASAP. I hope they get to the bottom of this and find out what went wrong.

It's just so sad for Ramos' family ๐Ÿ™. Losing someone loved ones due to a system failing them is just heartbreaking. We need to make sure these kinds of things don't happen in the future ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿ’” u know its just a tragedy ๐Ÿค•... cant even imagine how Ramos' fam is feelin right now ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Rikers has been a hot mess for yrs & its crazy that we're still seein these types of deaths ๐Ÿš‘. should be easy to prevent, but its like they dont have the resources or willpower to do it ๐Ÿ’ธ. Legal Aid Society's right 2 know whats happenin 2 their client ๐Ÿค... this isnt just about Ramos' death, its about how system failin him in every way ๐Ÿ‘Ž. need some serious change @ Rikers & the whole corrections system ๐Ÿ”„

Just read about this tragic news ๐Ÿค• and can't help but think how frustrating it is for these people's families... like what even is the point of plea deals if you're just gonna end up dying in a holding cell? ๐Ÿ’” It's always something with Rikers, one death after another. You'd think they'd have some system in place to prevent this kind of thing from happening, but nope ๐Ÿ™„. They're trying to spin it like their priority is the people, but honestly, how can that be when you've got 13 deaths this year already? It's just a sad reminder that we still gotta fight for better treatment of our prisoners... and their loved ones ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค• this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ข another life lost in our system. it's so unfair that edwin had to go through all that before being able to get some help. his dad must be beside himself with grief. why does it have to come to a tragic end like this? ๐Ÿค” and the fact that edwin's counselor was only told through the press is just infuriating ๐Ÿ˜ค shouldn't they know what's going on? shouldn't he be there for him when he needs them most? ๐Ÿค• this investigation better get to the bottom of it ASAP so we can learn from our mistakes. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

OMG, this is getting out of hand!!! ๐Ÿคฏ 13 DEATHS AT RIKERS ALREADY THIS YEAR AND NO ONE IS TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT!! I FEEL SO SAD FOR EDWIN RAMOS' FAMILY, HE DIDNT DESERVE TO LOSE HIS LIFE IN SUCH A PRECARIOUS SITUATION. ITS NOT LIKE HE WAS JUST SOME COMMON CRIMINAL, HE HAD A FATHER WHO FOUND OUT ABOUT HIS SON'S DEATH AT COURT AND HAD TO DEAL WITH THAT EMOTIONAL TRAUMA TOO ๐Ÿค•. THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY IS RIGHT TO SPEAK UP AND DEMAND ANSWERS FROM THE AUTHORITIES, WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY THIS KEEP ON HAPPENING!!! ๐Ÿ˜ก

can't believe this is happening again ๐Ÿค• at rikers island. what's going on here? they gotta do better than this, it's just not right. all these people are stuck in a system that's supposed to keep us safe but ends up taking lives instead. 13 deaths so far and still no clear answers. how many more has to happen before something changes? we need more transparency, not less ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿ˜” Another tragic loss at Rikers... it's like, I know there are gonna be some super unsavory stuff goin' down in those places but you'd think we could do better to prevent this kinda thing from happenin'. Like, the Legal Aid Society is totally right, fam - if someone finds out through the press instead of gettin' straight info from authorities... that's just wrong. ๐Ÿค• But at the same time, I'm glad they're investigatin' and tryin' to figure out what went down so we can prevent it in the future. ๐Ÿ’ก And I know the DOC is sayin' all the right things about prioritizin' care for detainees but... like, 13 deaths this year already? ๐Ÿคฏ It's just a big ol' red flag, you feel? Maybe we need to get some more resources and support in place to help these people. ๐Ÿšจ

OMG, like, another one dies at Rikers ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ˜ข... 13 detaines this year? That's just crazy! I mean, I'm all for keeping people accountable but come on, can't they do better than that? They're already having a bad day when their lawyer finds out about the death via social media - talk about a low point. The city needs to step up its game and take some real action, you know? Like, transparency is key here... family members should have access to all the deets, not just some watered-down version. ๐Ÿ’”
