London Symphony Orchestra announces John Harte as managing director

London Symphony Orchestra Appoints New Managing Director in Historic Succession

John Harte is set to take over as managing director at one of the world's most renowned orchestras, marking a new chapter in the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) after 20 years under Dame Kathryn McDowell. In his current role as chief executive of Aurora Orchestra since 2009, Harte has transformed the organization into a thriving arts force.

Under Harte's leadership at Aurora, the orchestra has experienced remarkable success, solidifying its position among Britain's leading music institutions in just a few short decades. Prior to joining Aurora, Harte worked for the British choral label Collegium and earned his Ph.D. in Middle Eastern history from the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Harte acknowledged the challenge ahead as he assumes the MD role at the LSO, stating that "It's a privilege to be appointed... to work closely with players, staff, board and collaborators to take the London Symphony Orchestra to still greater heights."

Sarah Quinn, chair of the LSO, praised Harte for his outstanding achievements at Aurora, saying, "John has led outstanding work at Aurora, which has become a significant force in UK music. We very much look forward to working together."

Harte will join an esteemed senior team that includes chief conductor Sir Antonio Pappano and conductor emeritus Sir Simon Rattle. As the LSO celebrates its rich history, dating back to 1904, Harte's appointment marks an exciting new chapter in the organization's future.

The search for Harte's predecessor, Dame Kathryn McDowell, has come to a close, as Aurora Orchestra begins searching for her replacement. The legacy of McDowell's 20-year tenure will be remembered as a defining period in the LSO's history, with Harte taking the reins to propel the orchestra to new heights.
