Light snow in NYC expected to usher in much more on Sunday

A light dusting of snow has fallen across New York City, with some areas bracing for more significant accumulations to come on Sunday.

According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Jay Engle, the latest snowfall is primarily concentrated in the north and northwest regions of the city, where residents can expect to see up to an inch of accumulation before conditions clear later today. While the current weather system may seem minor, Engle warned that a more substantial storm is on its way, set to hit Sunday afternoon into evening with totals reaching as high as 4 inches across the city.

Temperatures are expected to plummet, with Engle describing the scene as "rock solid frozen" once the new winter weather takes hold. As a result, New York City has activated its Winter Weather Emergency Plan, and a travel advisory is in effect for Sunday. Residents are advised to plan ahead and avoid traveling if possible.

The city's sanitation department is taking proactive steps to prepare for the worsening weather, deploying 700 salt spreaders that will be operating continuously through Sunday to pre-treat roads and bridges. Plows will also be stationed at the ready should neighborhoods experience more than two inches of accumulation.

To support vulnerable residents, New York City has issued a Code Blue weather alert, which is in effect from Saturday's 4 p.m. cutoff time until Monday morning's 8 a.m. The city will deploy outreach teams to assist homeless individuals in finding shelter, and residents are encouraged to report anyone in need to 311 for assistance.

With the new storm on the horizon, temperatures are expected to drop even further, with Engle warning that some of the coldest air of the season is likely to arrive by Monday and Tuesday.

🌨️ So this snow thingy comes up, and suddenly it's like, "Code Blue" alert out here! 🚨 I'm not saying Mayor Adams isn't doing enough for our city, but come on, 700 salt spreaders? That's like a tiny fraction of what we'd need to cover the whole city. What about those folks who can't afford to shovel their own sidewalks? Are they just gonna be left out in the cold? πŸ₯Ά And have you seen the state of our public transportation system lately? I bet it's gonna be gridlocked on Sunday anyway... Meanwhile, the wealthy elites are probably all snuggled up in their heated skyscrapers with a warm cup of coffee β˜•οΈ, while the rest of us are stuck out here shivering. πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

its gonna be a crazy weekend in nyc, like who needs sun when u got snow πŸ˜‚πŸ’¨ i feel bad for all those homeless folks tho, gotta make sure theyre safe & sound πŸ€— hope the outreach teams can do some good πŸ‘ the city's really stepping up this time, gotta give 'em props for that πŸ‘

omg its like nyc is getting a mini snow day already lol! idk how many ppl r prepared for this 4 inch storm tho? 700 salt spreaders should def help tho πŸ™πŸ’¨ i wonder if thats enough tho, dont wanna be stuck on the side of the road when it hits πŸš—πŸ’¦ what about the homeless people tho? code blue is always super helpful to have those outreach teams around 🀝🌟

Ugh, can't a city just get a decent winter without all this drama πŸ˜’? I mean, 4 inches of snow is nothing compared to what we saw last year πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And now they're activating the Winter Weather Emergency Plan... like, it's not like we haven't done this a million times before πŸ™„. The city's salt spreaders are doing their thing, but can't they just make sure the roads don't freeze over completely? It's not like it's going to take that much extra effort πŸ’ͺ.

And what's with all these precautions for homeless folks? I get it, they need help, but can't they just sort of... exist in the cold or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, come on, Code Blue weather alert... isn't that a bit dramatic? Can't we just stick to the usual winter blues and be done with it? πŸ˜’

By the way, 700 salt spreaders is a lot, but like, are they really gonna make a difference? It's not like some magical snow-pocalypse is gonna happen or something πŸ™„. Just let's get through this without too much hassle, you know? πŸ‘

OMG πŸŒ¨οΈβ„οΈ u guys wut r we gonna do now tht its snowing in nyc?? πŸ˜‚ i was planning on going 2 da park on sunday but now i think ill just stay home & binge-watch some netflix shows πŸ“Ί instead. i feel 4 all da ppl who dont have homes 2 go 2 🏠 i hope dey get de help dem need ASAP 🀞

I'm not looking forward to this one... a light dusting now, but 4 inches on Sunday? That's a whole different story! I hope everyone with power is getting ready for the potential outages, 'cause if it gets really cold, that'll just add insult to injury. And with temperatures plummeting, make sure you've got enough salt and sand to keep those sidewalks from becoming ice rinks. As a seasoned New Yorker, I'm all about being prepared for this kind of thing, but still... can't we just have a warm winter for once? β›ˆοΈβ„οΈ

The snow in NYC always brings a lot of excitement and preparation 🌨️... I think it's great that they're activating their Winter Weather Emergency Plan and deploying those 700 salt spreaders - you know, just in case things get out of hand ❄️. But seriously, with the travel advisory in effect for Sunday, I hope everyone stays safe on the roads πŸ’¨. And wow, a Code Blue weather alert? That's super proactive of them πŸ™... having outreach teams to help homeless individuals is just amazing ❀️. I'm a bit worried about those 4 inches of snow accumulation though - my grandma lives in Manhattan and she always freaks out during these big snowstorms 😬. Can't wait for the weekend, though! Fingers crossed it's not too chaotic 🀞
