Laura Holden: 'I don't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else'

In a shocking account of her harrowing two-year stint at Aberdeen, midfielder Laura Holden has revealed that she was left feeling neglected and unsupported by the club's coaching staff, physiotherapy team, and even its own women's players.

The injury-ravaged 30-minute spell on the pitch six months into her contract may have seemed minor to some, but for Holden, it marked a turning point in an already precarious situation. The physical toll of her ACL rupture was compounded by the mental anguish she endured at the hands of those entrusted with her care.

"I was so naive to the fact that I was struggling," Holden admits, reflecting on the devastating impact of Aberdeen's handling of her injury. "The rehab mentally destroyed me without me even realising it." As she navigated the gruelling rehabilitation process, Holden found herself constantly seeking reassurance from a physio who seemed more focused on ticking boxes than providing genuine support.

Her pleas for help were repeatedly dismissed as Holden struggled to come to terms with being made a "burden" by those in charge. The lack of transparency and accountability at Aberdeen left her feeling isolated, powerless, and desperate for answers.

One particularly harrowing incident – a row with the physio on the training pitch – has been etched into Holden's memory forever. In a moment that exposed the raw emotion she had been struggling to keep hidden, Holden was reduced to tears as she questioned her own value to the team.

"It got to the point where I was so done," she confesses. "I was so ready to just drop it all and quit." The mental strain eventually took its toll on her relationship with Aberdeen, a club that had once been the centre of her universe.

In an astonishing twist, Holden's departure from the club came not due to any perceived shortcomings on her part but rather a combination of factors – including a new coach, Scott Booth, who seemed more interested in finding a suitable loan destination than nurturing his star midfielder.

For Holden, though, it was clear that she had become dispensable. As the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, her resolve began to crumble. The prospect of returning to the pitch and facing the same emotional pitfalls once again proved too much to bear.

Today, as she looks back on an experience that will forever define her journey through women's football, Holden is adamant that she does not want what happened to her to happen to anyone else. Her courage in speaking out about the systemic failures at Aberdeen serves as a powerful reminder of the need for greater support and accountability within the sport.

As she embarks on a new chapter in Swindon Town, Holden remains resolute in her commitment to raise awareness about the very real mental health challenges faced by women footballers. Her story is an uncomfortable truth that must be confronted head-on – one that highlights the urgent need for clubs, coaches, and teammates to support those struggling with injury or hardship.

"I don't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else," she says, her voice still laced with emotion. And in speaking out, Holden has given a generation of young players a vital lifeline – one that will hopefully help them navigate the treacherous landscape of professional football with greater ease and compassion than ever before.

🤕 Aberdeen's handling of Laura Holden's injury is just shocking. She was left feeling so neglected & unsupported, it's unbelievable 🙄. The fact that she felt like a "burden" to the physio team is just heartbreaking. I mean, who can't provide genuine support to someone going through a tough time? 🤗

It's not just Laura's story, though - it's a bigger issue within women's football. We need more accountability & transparency from clubs & coaches. The fact that she felt isolated & powerless is something that needs to change ASAP 💪.

Laura's courage in speaking out is amazing, btw. She's giving a voice to so many young players who might not feel comfortable sharing their own struggles 🗣️. I hope her story can raise awareness & help create a more supportive environment for all women footballers 👏.

Laura Holden's story is like a puzzle with many broken pieces...
She was an important player for Aberdeen, but they didn't support her when she needed it most 🏀
Her ACL rupture was tough to deal with physically, and mentally, they didn't help at all 😔
They kept saying 'you're fine' even though she wasn't 👋

Holden's not alone in this struggle 🤝
Lots of women footballers face mental health issues too 🌟
Clubs need to be more supportive & listen to their players 💬
We should have better resources for mental health support in sports 🏋️‍♀️

Holden's courage is inspiring & brave 💪
She wants others not to go through what she did 😢
Let's hope her story can help create change in the sports world 💥

omg this story is literally heartbreaking 🤕 holding on to your seat while reading about laura's struggles with her club - it's like they were so neglectful & uncaring towards her needs 💔 especially that physio who just seemed to be ticking boxes without any actual care or support 😩 and now she's speaking out & i'm literally so proud of her for being a total legend 🙌 mental health in football is such an important issue & i hope more clubs take notice & start doing better 👊

I'm totally sure that what happened to Laura Holden at Aberdeen is super rare and not representative of the entire industry 🤔💁‍♀️... but at the same time, I'm pretty certain that it's actually a really common problem for female footballers who get injured or struggle with mental health issues 😩. I mean, who hasn't been in her shoes right? 🤷‍♂️ I think clubs and coaching staff need to be way more proactive about supporting their players, but maybe they're not as bad as people are making them out to be? 🤑

Man 🤯... this is so messed up! I mean, can you imagine being on the team, working your butt off, and then feeling like a burden to everyone around you? It's like they didn't care about Laura's well-being at all. The fact that she had to go through all that mental anguish just because of her injury is insane 🤯.

And what's even crazier is that the club was more focused on finding a new loan destination than helping their star midfielder recover from an ACL rupture! I mean, what kind of support system does that make? It's like they were just gonna throw her out to dry and move on with whatever. No wonder she wanted to quit 🤕.

But you know what the worst part is? This isn't even a rare occurrence. There are so many stories out there about female athletes being neglected or mistreated by their teams, coaches, or even teammates. It's like we're living in a world where players are just expected to suck it up and deal with whatever comes their way without any support or care 🤷‍♀️.

Anyway, I'm just so glad Laura is speaking out about this because she's giving people a voice and a reason to listen. We need more stories like hers to bring attention to the fact that mental health matters in sports too 💔.

🤕 this is so sad, laura holden's story is heartbreaking 😔 she went through so much emotional pain and was left feeling neglected & unsupported by her own team 🙅‍♀️ it's crazy how they made her feel like a "burden" and didn't care about her well-being 💔 the lack of transparency and accountability at abraham is just appalling 😡

i think this story highlights how mental health issues are still not taken seriously in football 🏟️ especially for women players who already face so many challenges on the pitch 💪 but laura's courage in speaking out is really inspiring 💖 i hope her experience will lead to change and more support for players struggling with injury or hardship 🤞

🤯 This is so wild I mean, you'd think that when you're hurt as bad as Laura was her team would be all about supporting her not making her feel like a burden 😩. It's crazy how some people can make someone feel like they're worthless just because of their role or position on the team 🤷‍♀️.

And what really gets me is that she went through so much trauma and still wants to help others go through the same thing 💔. I'm so proud of her for speaking out and sharing her story, it's going to make a huge difference in how clubs and teams treat their players 🙌. We need more people like Laura who aren't afraid to speak truth to power 💪.

omg i cant even right now, abeerns handling of laura holden's injury is literally unacceptable 2 yrs of rehab & they still dont give her the support she needs? its like they didnt care if shes lost her mental health 2 bits it got to the point where she felt like a burden 2 them, not the team shes playing 4 lol what kind of culture r u running here??

This is so messed up 😱. Clubs need to prioritize their player's mental health just as much as their physical well-being, especially when it comes to injuries and recovery. I mean, how hard can it be for someone to say "hey, we need to check in with Laura more often" or "we should have a plan in place for supporting her during rehab"? It sounds like Aberdeen was completely clueless 💀. And the fact that they made Laura feel like she was a burden? That's just unacceptable 😡. I'm so glad she spoke out about this because it needs to spark change and get more attention on player welfare in women's football 🌟.

🚨 think aberdeen's problem isnt just laura holden they didnt create an environment where she felt supported... physiotherapy team should be there for players not just ticking boxes 📝 mental health matters way more than just getting the player back on pitch ASAP 💔 and scott booth sounds like he prioritized loan deals over his own players' well-being 😒 might need to rethink how clubs handle injuries and player welfare in general... can't just rely on 'we're sorry' when things go wrong 🤷‍♀️

Honestly 🤔 I'm like totally torn about this whole thing... Like, on one hand Laura Holden's story is super sad and it's crazy that she was made to feel like a burden by her own team 😢. But at the same time, I can see how some people might think that Aberdeen wasn't entirely in the wrong... They did have a new coach, after all 🤷‍♀️. And maybe they weren't aware of the extent of Holden's struggles? 🤔

And yet, on another hand, isn't it kinda obvious that the coaching staff and physio team were totally not doing enough to support her? Like, come on! 🙄 It's basic human decency to care about your players' mental health and well-being. And if Aberdeen wasn't providing that... then that's just a major red flag ⚠️.

Ugh, my brain is all over the place now 😂. What do you guys think?

I'm totally on Laura Holden's side here 🤯 I mean, who wouldn't want to be treated like dirt by their own team? It's Aberdeen's fault for not providing her with the support she needed, not hers for being injured or struggling mentally 💔 The fact that they just saw her as a "burden" is just appalling. And yeah, Scott Booth's new coach thing sounds like total BS too 🙄 I don't get why anyone would want to be in charge of someone who's already at their breaking point. Anyway, hope Laura finds the support and love she deserves with Swindon Town ⚽

I cant even imagine being in Laura Holden's shoes 🤕😩 she was literally made to feel like a burden by her own team 💔 it's crazy that physios were more worried about ticking boxes than actually helping her recover 📝 and the lack of transparency is just wild 🚫 clubs need to prioritize their players' mental health way more, especially in a sport where injuries are super common 😕 we should all be supporting our favorite athletes, not making them feel like they're on their own 💪

Wow 🤯💔 so broken system at Aberdeen is just mind boggling, physio was more focused on "tick boxes" than actual care for player mental health is seriously concerning, clubs need to do better supporting players through tough times 💪

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade" 🍋💪 - You can't pour from an empty cup. Laura Holden's story is a harsh reminder that supporting players' mental health needs to be at the forefront of every club's priorities. No player should feel neglected or unsupported by their own team, let alone face severe emotional trauma due to inadequate care. It's time for clubs and coaches to put athletes first! 💕

Ugh 🤕 this is just another example of how broken the women's sports scene is 💔 Aberdeen's handling of Laura Holden's injury was totally appalling, it's like they didn't even care about her well-being or her mental health 🤷‍♀️ and now she's speaking out because everyone else won't listen. It's so frustrating that clubs are more interested in making a quick profit than supporting their players 💸 Swindon Town is lucky to have her, let's see how long they can keep up the charade 😒

💔 this is so disturbing to hear about Laura Holden's experience at Aberdeen... it's just not right that she felt neglected & unsupported by her own team 🤯 physios should be more than just ticking boxes, they need to genuinely care for players' well-being 💕 and the fact that she was made a "burden" is just heartbreaking 😔

as a fan of women's football, it's so important for us to create a culture where players feel valued & supported, not just when they're performing well but also when they're struggling with injuries or mental health issues 🤝 clubs need to do better in providing resources & support systems for their players 👍

omg u cannt even imagine how hard it must be 2 go thru wht Laura Holden went thru at Aberdeen 🤕💔 she was literally treated like a burden by her own team & physiotherapist lol what kind of toxic environment r we talkin bout? 🙅‍♀️ she was on the verge of giving up but then she found the courage 2 speak out & now shes makin waves in the sports world 💪👏 i gotta give it 2 her 4 being so brave & honest about her struggles with mental health & injury 😌 lets make sure clubs & teams prioritize their players' well-being over winning trophies 💖

🚨 This is gonna sound harsh but I think some of these players need to take responsibility for their own mental health. 🤔 I mean, Laura Holden's story is heart-wrenching, don't get me wrong, but it sounds like she was letting her emotions run wild and not communicating effectively with the team and staff. 🤷‍♀️ We can't just pin everything on the coaches and physios; players need to be more proactive in seeking help when they're struggling. 💪
