Kate Owens: Cooking With Kathryn review – recipes for religious repression, rebellion and ruin

Comedy has once again been called upon to tackle the sexism of the Christian church in Kate Owens' Cooking With Kathryn. The show's protagonist, a woman from America's Bible belt, struggles to keep up appearances as she hosts her late mother's community cooking show for the first time. Owens brings this familiar narrative to life with her teasing and charismatic presence, playing a type that audiences will instantly recognize – a woman on the edge, barely concealing panic behind a mask of too much makeup and a flashing smile.

As Kathryn navigates her way through cookery workshops that descend into slapstick disaster, Owens skillfully exploits the tension between traditional expectations and her own desires. The "biblical brew" handed down by generations of Kathryns becomes a catalyst for chaos, with Owens delivering some fine drunken acting in a performance that is both broad and physically comedic.

However, the show's climax falls short, with Kathryn singing a so-so song about her deviations from Christian chastity followed by an overly neat absolution from her mother. Despite this, Owens' deft clownish touch ensures that every sequence remains pregnant with possibility, keeping the audience engaged until the very end.

The "deflowering ceremony" involving Kathryn, two plucky punters, and an ominous bedsheet is a particularly standout moment, as Owens masterfully maintains control of the audience's emotions. However, even her skilled hands can't quite steady the ship when it comes to cookery efforts, leaving one wondering what exactly is being cooked.

Ultimately, Cooking With Kathryn is a deliciously dark comedy that skillfully tackles themes of sexism and repression within the Christian church. Owens' charismatic performance ensures that this show will keep you laughing and on the edge of your seat until the very end.

I'm loving how they're using comedy to tackle some heavy issues like sexism and repression in the Christian church 🤣💁‍♀️. Kate Owens is hilarious as Kathryn, I love how she's just so over the top with her character but still makes you feel for her at the same time 😂. The bit with the "biblical brew" was pure gold, had me giggling out loud 🍺. But yeah, the show could've benefited from a bit more cohesion in terms of the plot, especially with that weird cookery segment at the end... like what's even being cooked here? 🤔 still, it's a solid dark comedy and Owens' energy is infectious 💃🏻

OMG I just watched this show and it's SO GOOD!!! 🤣👏 The way Kate Owens plays Kathryn is literally perfection! She's got this whole 'on the edge' vibe going on and it's so relatable especially for people who've ever felt like they're not living up to societal expectations 😂. And that "deflowering ceremony" scene was EVERYTHING 🔥🎉 I also love how she pokes fun at cookery and the whole Christian thing - it's just so cleverly done 🤓. My only gripe is that some scenes felt a bit rushed, but overall it's such a funny and engaging show! 👍

I'm not sure I buy into the whole "comedy as social commentary" thing 🤔. I mean, is it just a clever way to avoid actually addressing the issues? And what's with the show's climax being so... tidy? It feels like they're glossing over the more serious stuff in favor of some laughs and a feel-good ending 😊. Don't get me wrong, Kate Owens is hilarious, but can we talk about how problematic it is to use a "deflowering ceremony" as a plot point? Is that really meant to be ironic or subversive? 🙄

omg I loved this show so much!!! 😍 the way Kate Owens plays Kathryn is just perfection, she's like a breath of fresh air amidst all those expectations and rules 💁‍♀️. I was literally dying laughing during that "deflowering ceremony" 🤣 and my heart was breaking for Kathryn when she sang that song about being deviated from her Christian chastity 🎶. but you know what's even better? how Owens still manages to make it work despite the cookery bits being kinda meh lol idk, maybe I'm just a sucker for dark comedies, but I'm definitely down for more of this kind of thing 💖

OMG 😂🍳 I loved how Kate Owens brought her character to life! She's so hilarious 🤣, and I loved the way she played off the tension between traditional expectations and her own desires 💁‍♀️. That "deflowering ceremony" was epic 🎉, but omg, what is that stuff they're trying to cook? 🤔 it looked like they just threw some random ingredients in a pot 🍲. The show's climax did feel a bit rushed though ⏱️, but overall I thought it was SO funny 😂 and so cleverly done 💡. Can't wait to see what Kate Owens does next! 👀

I gotta say, I'm lovin' how this show is makin' me laugh and think at the same time 😂🤣! As a nostalgic who's grown up with some pretty cheesy Christian comedies, it's rad to see someone subvertin' those tropes in a fresh way. But, oh man, that "deflowering ceremony" moment? 🤦‍♀️ That was straight fire 🔥! Kathryn Owens is like the anti- Mary Kay place and I am HERE FOR IT 👍💁‍♀️

And you know what's even more impressive? How this show can tackle some heavy themes like sexism and repression without bein' too preachy or heavy-handed 🙏. It's all about findin' that balance between laugh-out-loud funny and thought-provokin', and I think they nailed it 💯.

Now, if only Kathryn's cookin' skills were on par with her sass... 😉 just kidding, who needs good food when you've got this level of comedy? 😂

omg I just watched this cooking show and it's SO relatable! as someone who's tried to navigate family traditions while staying true to myself, I feel like Kathryn is speaking straight to my soul lol 😂👏. I love how the show tackles sexism in the church without being preachy or heavy-handed – it's just so refreshing! 💖 and omg that "deflowering ceremony" had me DYING 🤣. The cookery bits were a bit wonky, but honestly, who needs perfect cooking when you've got Owens' charm on screen? 🍳❤️

idk about this whole cooking show thing... sounds like a joke, right? "biblical brew" and all that jazz 🤣 but seriously, how realistic is it that a woman from the bible belt would be hosting her own cooking show? didn't they grow up with their mom's recipe book and stuff? and what's with this whole "deflowering ceremony" business? feels like a plot point straight out of a bad sitcom 😂 anyway, I guess if you're into that sorta thing, it might be entertaining... just need to see some actual cooking happen 🍳

OMG you guys I just binged this new cooking show "Cooking With Kathryn" 🍴😂 and I am SHOOK! The way the actress plays the lead, a woman from America's Bible belt trying to navigate her community cookery show, is SO relatable 🤷‍♀️. She's got this amazing energy that makes you laugh out loud at all these slapstick disasters 😂 but also feels so real when she's talking about her own desires and rebellion against traditional expectations 💁‍♀️.

I loved how they tackled the sexism of the Christian church in a really clever way, using comedy to expose the hypocrisy 🤔. And that "deflowering ceremony" scene is EVERYTHING 😂👏 Owens is just pure magic on screen! Even when the cooking plotlines were a bit wonky (what's actually being cooked?!? 🤷‍♀️), she kept me engaged and entertained from start to finish 🎉.

Anyway, if you're looking for some dark comedy that'll also make you feel seen, then "Cooking With Kathryn" is def worth checking out 💖

omg, i'm loving how cooking with kathryn is using comedy to tackle those super uncomfortable issues like sexism and christian expectations 🤣🍳. Kathryn's character is so relatable, especially when she's trying to navigate these traditional norms while being her own person. the show's climax might be a bit disappointing, but overall i think it's a great example of how humor can shine a light on some heavy stuff 💡. and can we talk about owens' acting skills? she's like a comedic genius 🔥👏

This show is so funny 🤣! I love how it pokes fun at the expectations placed on women in the Bible belt, especially when it comes to sex and marriage. Kathryn's character is hilarious, she's like a fish out of water trying to keep up with her mother's traditional cooking show but adding her own twist. The "biblical brew" idea is genius 🤪 and I love how Owens plays with the tension between tradition and individuality. The comedy is spot on, from the slapstick disasters to Kathryn's drunken acting, it's all so well done. My only gripe is that the cookery bits were a bit of a letdown, but overall, this show is a winner 👏!

I'm loving how Comedy with Kathryn uses satire to tackle sensitive topics like sexism in the Christian church, it's so needed 🤣👏! The way Kate Owens brings her character to life is honestly hilarious, I was on the edge of my seat laughing at all the slapstick moments 😂. But what really stood out to me was how she masterfully handled themes of repression and conformity, it's like she poked fun at our own societal norms 🤦‍♀️. The show's climax might have been a bit predictable, but Owens' energy is infectious, I'm already looking forward to the next season 👀! Can't wait to see what other dark comedies come out this year 🎉💥

I'm telling ya, Kate Owens nailed it with this cooking show - she's like a breath of fresh air, tackling all those heavy Christian themes in a super relatable way 🤣. I mean, who hasn't felt like they're stuck between their parents' expectations and what they really want to do? The show is full of those awkward moments where you just wanna facepalm... but Owens makes 'em work, using her charm and physical comedy skills to keep it all entertaining 😂.

And let's be real, the cookery parts might've been a bit sketchy (lol, what was she even making?! 🤔), but that's all part of the charm. It's like she's poking fun at the idea of 'cooking shows' and how they're always so perfect. I loved the "deflowering ceremony" bit - Owens just owns it with her energy 😂.

I would've liked to see a more satisfying conclusion, tbh... that song part did feel a bit tacked on 🎶. But overall, Cooking With Kathryn is super funny and engaging, and Kate Owens is a genius for making all those themes so accessible in a comedy format 👏.

I'm so stoked for shows like Cooking With Kathryn 🤣! They're just what we need, a good laugh and some commentary on serious issues at the same time. I love how Kate Owens brings her character to life with that perfect balance of humor and heartache 😂. And don't even get me started on the cookery scenes... I mean, come on, who doesn't love watching someone try to make a cake while freaking out? 🍰🤯. The show's not perfect, but it's definitely entertaining and makes you think about the church's expectations on women in a new way. 👏

I'm literally DYING over here 🤣👏! The way Kate Owens just skewers those patriarchal expectations in the Christian community is EVERYTHING 😂🔥 I mean, a "deflowering ceremony" involving two punters and an ominous bedsheet? Mind. Blown. 💀 But seriously, what really gets me is how Owens tackles the sexism head-on without shying away from the absurdity of it all 🤪 Her energy is infectious, and I'm here for more of that sass 😏 Can't wait to see what she does next! 👍

I'm not sure I agree with this show being called a "deliciously dark comedy" - it's more like a satire, right? I mean, using a cooking show to poke fun at sexism in the Christian church is clever, but let's be real, it's a pretty straightforward approach. Can't they have done that without the cookery element? 🤔

And don't even get me started on the portrayal of Kathryn's "deviations from Christian chastity" - isn't that just reinforcing the very sexism she's trying to subvert? I mean, come on, a song about not being able to control her desires is basically saying that women are still expected to be selfless and obedient. Not exactly progressive. 🙄

🤣 This Kate Owens character sounds like a total wild card! I love how she's trying to fit into these traditional roles but her femininity just keeps on bursting out in the most hilarious ways 😂. The idea that she's got some issues with being a good Christian girl is totally relatable, and it's awesome that she's not afraid to poke fun at herself. 👩‍🍳 The "deflowering ceremony" scene had me dying lol! Owens must be a comedic genius 🤓. And I gotta say, the cookery segments were kinda funny too... maybe they just need some more practice 🍰💁‍♀️. Can't wait to see what she does next! 👀

I gotta say, this show's got some major hits... and misses 🤔🍳 The way Kathryn navigates her community cooking show is so relatable, especially for anyone who's ever felt like they're living up to other people's expectations. Owens' energy is infectious, but I was a bit disappointed with the cookery bits - it felt like they were just thrown in there as an afterthought 🤷‍♀️.

That being said, the show's tackling of sexism and repression within the Christian church is super important, and Owens does a great job of bringing attention to these issues. The "deflowering ceremony" scene was hilarious and uncomfortable at the same time 😂👀. I'm just hoping that in future episodes, they'll work on tightening up those cookery segments 🙏. Overall, though, it's a wild ride with plenty of laughs!
