Joburg Ballet: Communion of Light review – pointe-shoe prettiness and mad, itching murder

The Joburg Ballet's latest production, Communication of Light, is an eclectic showcase featuring a range of styles and subjects from across continents. The evening begins with a lighthearted and dated Concerto for Charlie, which may appear twee at first glance but holds a knowing quality in its performance. The smooth, jazzy ballet numbers and Revlon-inspired outfits evoke a sense of nostalgia, while the piece subtly explores themes of racial antagonism and unity.

Director Dane Hurst's own Resonance adds another layer of complexity to the evening, shifting seamlessly between beauty and unease as it delves into South Africa's troubled history. The juxtaposition of prettiness and darkness is striking, making for a thought-provoking viewing experience.

Other highlights include a contemporary piece by Jorge Pérez Martínez, set to Spanish guitar, which showcases the talents of dancer Monike Cristina. Tumelo Lakana's poignant ritual prayer to his ancestors stands out as well, featuring South African steps in pointe shoes – a powerful tribute to tradition and heritage.

However, it is Dada Masilo's Salomé that truly steals the show. This urgent, energetic piece, created specifically for Joburg Ballet before Masilo's untimely passing, pulses with dramatic energy. Latoya Mokoena delivers an unforgettable performance as the seductive and powerful Salomé, bringing a sense of tragedy to the tragic finale.

The evening concludes on a somber note, leaving the audience eager to see where Hurst will lead this company in the future. As we bid farewell to Masilo's brilliant work, one can't help but feel a deep sadness at the loss – but also immense gratitude for the opportunity to experience his artistry and the incredible performances that Joburg Ballet has to offer.

OMG, I'm still reeling from the emotional rollercoaster of Communication of Light 🤯! The Joburg Ballet absolutely NAILED it with this eclectic production - from the jazzy vibes in Concerto for Charlie (love those Revlon-inspired outfits 💅) to the hauntingly beautiful Resonance (Dane Hurst's direction is, like, WOW). And can we talk about Dada Masilo's Salomé? 🤯 That piece was INSANE, Monike Cristina and Latoya Mokoena delivering some serious chills 😱. The way they wove together themes of power, tragedy, and cultural heritage was SO masterfully done. I'm still thinking about it, like weeks later... the only thing that's left me feeling sad is the loss of Dada Masilo 🙏, but what an incredible tribute to his artistry. The Joburg Ballet just gets better and better 💖

I think what really stood out to me about Communication of Light was how well they wove together these different styles and themes - it's not just a collection of pieces, it feels like a cohesive whole. I mean, you've got this super lighthearted opening piece that's trying to make us laugh, but then suddenly we're plunged into something really dark and serious. It's like, what are they trying to tell us? And I think that's the beauty of it - there's no clear answer, just a lot of complexity and depth.

And can we talk about the way they showcased South African talent? Monike Cristina was absolutely on fire in that contemporary piece, and Tumelo Lakana's ritual prayer was so powerful. It felt like they were really celebrating their heritage, rather than just incorporating it into the performance. And then Dada Masilo's Salomé... wow. That woman can move. The energy she brought to the stage was just incredible.

But what really got me was the way the evening ended - all somber and sad, leaving us with this sense of what could've been. It's like, we're left wondering what the future holds for this company now that Masilo is no longer with them. It's a bit of a bittersweet ending, but I think it's also kind of beautiful in its own way 😊💔

🙏 I felt so emotional watching this production 🤯 I mean, you can tell they're trying to tackle some heavy topics like racial antagonism and unity, but it's just so powerful 💖 seeing these dancers bring it all to life on stage. And Dada Masilo's Salomé? 🌹 that girl can ACT! Latoya Mokoena was absolutely breathtaking 😍 I loved how they included traditional South African steps in pointe shoes - it felt like a nod to their heritage 👏. But what really got me was the mix of beauty and darkness throughout the performance 💔 it's just so thought-provoking 🤯. Can't wait to see where Joburg Ballet goes from here! 🎭

OMG I'm so hyped about this new production from the Joburg Ballet 🤩🌟! I mean, it's like they took all these different styles and subjects from around the world and mashed them together into one epic show 💥! The way the director Dane Hurst weaves these themes of light and darkness together is just masterful – it's like he's taking us on this wild emotional ride 🎢. And I'm totally obsessed with Dada Masilo's Salomé, her performance was so intense and captivating 🔥! It's heartbreaking that he passed away, but what an incredible legacy to leave behind 💕. I'm already counting down the days until the next show from Joburg Ballet... this is gonna be a wild ride 🎭💫

I'm still reeling from that Salomé performance by Dada Masilo 🤩... Latoya Mokoena was absolutely breathtaking, I mean, who else can bring that level of intensity and power to a role like that? 😍 And can we talk about how beautiful the costumes were? Those Revlon-inspired outfits are EVERYTHING 💅. But what really got me was how it felt like the whole production was a eulogy for Dada Masilo himself 🎭... I mean, the man created this piece specifically for Joburg Ballet and now he's gone? 😔 It's just so sad. But at the same time, I feel like that's what makes his performance in Salomé so special – it's like we're all experiencing something truly raw and emotional 💕.

🌟 I had such an amazing time watching this production, Communication of Light, it was like a masterclass in emotional storytelling. The way they balanced different styles and themes was just genius, like layering colors on a canvas - each piece complemented the other so perfectly! 🎨 And Dada Masilo's Salomé... oh my goodness, Latoya Mokoena is a force to be reckoned with. Her performance had me on the edge of my seat, I felt every ounce of her passion and intensity. It was like being transported to another world, one that's both beautiful and hauntingly dark at the same time. 🌌 The way they paid tribute to South African heritage through Tumelo Lakana's piece was also really touching, it added such depth to the overall experience. I'm still reeling from the energy of this production, it left me in awe... and a little bit melancholic that we won't get to see Dada Masilo's work again on stage. 💔

🌟 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." 📚💫 I think what's amazing about Communication of Light is how it takes you on a journey through different pages of South African culture and history. It's a testament to the power of art in bridging gaps and sparking conversations. The way it weaves together styles, subjects, and emotions is truly captivating. 🌈💖

I think Communication of Light is gonna be such a hit, you know? The way they mixed all these different styles and themes together is just genius 🤩. I loved how Concerto for Charlie started off light and carefree, but then took a darker turn – it was like a rollercoaster ride of emotions 😱. And that piece by Jorge Pérez Martínez? The Spanish guitar just added this whole new level of depth to the performance. But what really stood out to me was Salomé – Dada Masilo's final masterpiece is still going to be talked about for ages 🔥. It's a shame he had to pass away, but at least his art will live on and inspire future generations 💖.

I was really moved by Salomé performance 🙏💔 Latoya Mokoena's performance as Salomé is truly unforgettable, it's like she's channeling this dark energy and taking us on a wild ride. It's beautiful how Dada Masilo managed to bring out the drama in that piece, I felt all my emotions just watching her 💖 But at the same time, I was so grateful to see that Joburg Ballet took risks with other pieces like Resonance and Jorge Pérez Martínez' contemporary work... it shows they're not afraid to push boundaries 🌈

OMG 🤯 I'm literally DYING over Dada Masilo's Salomé!!! Latoya Mokoena is absolute perfection as Salomé, her performance is EVERYTHING 😍💥! And can we talk about the themes of racial antagonism and unity? It's SO relevant right now 💖🌎. The way the choreographer weaves together beauty and darkness is just genius 🤓. I'm still reeling from the experience, it was like a punch to the feels 😩 but in the best possible way! Joburg Ballet slayed this production, can't wait for what's next 💫

I'm feeling so touched by the review of The Joburg Ballet's latest production 🌟💖. It's clear that they're really bringing the audience on a powerful emotional journey through their work, tackling some heavy themes like racial antagonism and South Africa's history in such a beautiful yet thought-provoking way 💔. And that performance by Dada Masilo as Salomé... *shakes head* it's just heartbreaking to think about how we've lost him 🙏. But at the same time, I'm so grateful that his artistry is still being celebrated and shared with us through performances like this one ❤️. It's a really special thing, knowing that we can experience the beauty of human creativity even in the midst of sadness 😔.

🌟 I just got back from watching The Joburg Ballet's Communication of Light and OMG, what an unforgettable night! Dane Hurst's Resonance was a total mind-blower, like how can one piece be so hauntingly beautiful? 🤯 And Dada Masilo's Salomé was insane – Latoya Mokoena's performance gave me chills! 😲 I'm still thinking about the energy and emotion that went into every single move... what an incredible tribute to Masilo's artistry 💕. The whole show was like a rollercoaster of emotions, but in the best way possible 🎠. Definitely can't wait for Joburg Ballet's next production! 👏

OMG yaaas I'm dead from Dada Masilo's Salomé!!! 🤯🕺 it was like watching a force of nature on stage 😱 Latoya Mokoena slayed as Salomé, I mean what can I even say? 😂 the energy was electric and you could feel the pain and passion pouring out of her 🌟 but at the same time it's heartbreaking to think Masilo won't be around to see this magic happen again 💔 so much respect to Joburg Ballet for bringing this masterpiece back to life ❤️

Just got out of this dance show in Joburg and I gotta say, it was all over the place 🤯. One minute its all fancy and jazzy, next it's like someone threw a can of emotional punches at you. And what's with all these new pieces? The choreo was cool but sometimes felt like they were trying too hard to be different. But that Salomé piece by Dada Masilo though... that girl is a STAR 💫. Too bad she passed away, would've loved to see more of her work 🕊️

Omg u guys I just saw The Joburg Ballet's new production Communication of Light & it was LIFE CHANGING!!! 🤩 I mean I loved everything about it, but specifically Dada Masilo's Salomé was insane!!! 🎭 Latoya Mokoena's performance was like wow, she totally gave me chills every time she danced on stage. And the way they incorporated South African steps in pointe shoes for Tumelo Lakana's piece? Iconic 💁‍♀️! I also loved how the director Dane Hurst wove together all these different styles and themes to create this super complex & thought-provoking show. It was like my brain was being pulled in a million directions but in the best way possible 😂. Anyway, I just wanted to share my excitement with u all because communication of light is honestly one of the most amazing things i've seen all year 💖

Ugh I'm literally still reeling from that Salomé performance 🤯 Dada Masilo's work is like... you can feel his soul in every step, it's heartbreaking thinking he won't be with us to see how this company continues to grow 💔 Latoya Mokoena absolutely NAILED her role, I mean we're talking Oscar-level talent right there 👏 but at the same time it's so frustrating that Masilo is gone, I feel like his energy and passion are just... missing from the stage 🕰️ and can't even begin to describe how beautiful and powerful Tumelo Lakana's piece was, it gives me chills every time I think about it 😍

Meh, another ballet production with all these fancy steps and weird costumes 🤷‍♂️. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to put pointe shoes on dancers from different cultures? It's just gonna be awkward and uncomfortable to watch. And don't even get me started on the outfits - Revlon-inspired outfits? Really? 😒

I'm surprised they didn't mess up the tribute to South African heritage with some half-baked cultural appropriation 🙄. But I guess Tumelo Lakana's ritual prayer is kind of beautiful... in a weird, forced way. And Dada Masilo's Salomé is definitely intense - but it's just too sad that he passed away already 😢.

I'm not gonna lie, the whole thing felt like some feel-good PR stunt to get people talking about diversity and inclusion 🤷‍♀️. But hey, if you're into that sorta thing, go for it. I'll stick to watching Netflix or something 📺.
