Insurer won't pay out after medical emergency forced us to cancel wedding

Insurer Leaves Couple High and Dry After Medical Emergency Forces Cancellation of Wedding

A couple's dream wedding was turned upside down when the groom's brother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer just two days before the big day. The family had purchased cancellation insurance from The Insurance Emporium (TIE) 18 months earlier, which covered unexpected events such as weddings being cancelled due to illness or bereavement.

However, when the couple submitted a claim after the wedding was called off, they were shocked to be told that their policy did not cover pre-existing conditions. According to TIE, the brother's fatigue prior to the commencement of the policy was considered symptoms of the tumour and therefore disqualified from being covered under the insurance.

The couple was denied £9,000 in compensation last October, but just three weeks later, the insurer announced that it would pay out the amount after further review. However, just as they thought they were getting their money back, TIE withdrew the offer once again, leaving the couple with a staggering loss of £22,000.

The insurer's stance on pre-existing conditions has been criticized by experts, who argue that its terms and conditions are too vague and sweeping. The Financial Ombudsman Service has stated that customers should be aware of any undiagnosed pre-existing conditions that may lead to a claim if symptoms are minor and unspecific.

TIE has refused to alter or waive the pre-existing condition exclusion for individual cases, but it has rewritten its declaration form to specifically ask about conditions awaiting test results or treatment. The insurer has also agreed to reinstate the £9,000 offer after further review.

The case highlights the need for clear and transparent insurance contracts that protect consumers from unexpected events like this. The couple's experience serves as a reminder of the importance of carefully reading policy terms and conditions before purchasing insurance.

🤕 Ugh, I'm so frustrated for that poor couple! It's unacceptable that they had to go through all that stress and uncertainty just because the insurer didn't clearly define what pre-existing conditions meant in their policy. 🙄 18 months ago they bought that insurance thinking it would cover them if something unexpected happened - and boy did they need it, right? 💸

I mean, can you imagine if your big day was ruined by a family emergency and then you found out the insurer wasn't going to help you because of some technicality about a pre-existing condition? 😱 It's just not right. And what really gets me is that they had to fight so hard to get their £9,000 back... and even then, it was all taken away from them again. 💸😩

I think the insurer needs to take a long hard look at its policies and make sure they're clear and fair for everyone. And consumers need to be more careful when buying insurance - read those terms and conditions before signing on the dotted line! 📝 It's just basic fairness, you know? 😊

Ugh, can't believe that insurer is still being so unfair to that poor couple 🤕! They went through so much stress with their brother's diagnosis and then they get denied coverage not once but TWICE? It's just ridiculous. And now they're left with a huge loss of £22,000... I mean, what even is the point of having insurance if it's not going to protect you from unexpected events like this?

I think TIE needs to seriously rethink their policy terms and conditions. It's too vague and sweeping, and it's just not fair to customers who may be dealing with pre-existing conditions without even realizing it 🙄. I mean, what's the point of asking about symptoms or treatment if you're just going to exclude them from coverage anyway?

Anyway, I hope that couple finally gets some justice and gets their £22,000 back 💸. And maybe TIE should consider a major overhaul of their policies to make things more transparent and consumer-friendly 🙏

I'm literally speechless 🤯🤑... This is just insane! £22,000 gone in the blink of an eye? 😱 TIE needs to get its act together, IMO 🙄. Did you see that graph on pre-existing conditions? 📊 It's through the roof since 2020! 💥 That's when COVID-19 was still a thing and we were all getting tested left & right... it's like insurance companies are trying to catch us off guard 😅.

Anyway, back to TIE. Their claims process is slower than my grandma's gossip circle 🤪... 3 months for an initial denial, only to have them change their minds after 6 weeks and then take it back again? 🔄 That's some fancy footwork right there! 🕺 They need to be more transparent about what conditions they cover and don't cover.

Stats-wise, did you know that the average claim payout for cancellation insurance is around £4,000? 💸 TIE is basically doubling that for this one couple... 🤑 It's just not fair 😔. I think regulators need to step in and tighten up those contract clauses.

Update: The Financial Ombudsman Service has said they're looking into TIE's practices... 👀 Fingers crossed for the couple! 💕

Ugh 🤕... can you even imagine getting to your wedding day, all dressed up and ready to go, and then finding out your brother has a brain tumor? 😱 And then, to find out that your insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions because of some minor symptom they just happened to notice 18 months ago?! It's like they're playing a cruel joke on the couple.

And what really gets me is that TIE first denied them £9,000 in compensation but then changed their minds and offered it back. But now they've taken it away again? 🤦‍♀️ It's just so frustrating. I feel for this poor couple who are left with a huge loss of money.

It's time for insurance companies to get their act together and make policies more transparent. We don't want people being stuck in situations like this because of some technicality or loophole. 💸 The least TIE could do is reinstate the original offer without making them jump through hoops again 🙄

🤯 Can't believe how one-sided those insurance policies are 🙄. This couple was dealt a devastating blow, cancelled their wedding on short notice & now they're out £22k 😱. Pre-existing conditions exclusion is just a fancy way of saying 'we'll screw you over' 💸. It's just not fair! 🤷‍♂️ They should've been warned about this on the application form, at least 📝. Not to mention, what if it was their loved one with a minor health issue? Would they be out of luck too? 🤔 The insurance industry needs to get its act together & start putting consumers first 👊

omg u can't believe these ppl?? 🤯 they cancelled their wedding bc one of the groom's bro got sick but then tried to get compensation back from the insurer and were told their own family member's health prob doesn't count lol what even is that?! 🙄 the insurer's all like "we're sorry" but also "sorry not sorry" 😒 it's just not right. i mean, who wouldn't wanna protect themselves against situations like this? 💸 22k is a lot of money for a mistake like that. at least the couple got some compensation last time and now they know to read the policy carefully before buying 📚👀

Ugh, can you believe it?! 😱 I mean, who buys cancellation insurance without thinking about pre-existing conditions?! 🤯 My aunt had to deal with something similar when her husband passed away just a year after their wedding. She thought she was covered for the funeral expenses, but the insurance company told her it wasn't worth reviewing the policy again... 30 years ago! 💸 I remember my grandma having to pay out of pocket because her husband's death was too close to the start date of the policy. It was so unfair back then, and now this couple is going through the same thing? 🤷‍♀️ At least they got their £9,000 offer reinstated after a second review... but still, £22k lost in the end... 🤑

😔 This is just heartbreaking 🤕... I mean, can you even imagine your whole life comes down to one day and then BAM! Life hits you with something completely out of control? 😱 It's not fair that they had to go through all this stress & anxiety just because their wedding got cancelled due to a family emergency 💔. And now the insurer is basically taking advantage of them 🤑. I'm so sorry to hear about what they're going through... 💕

Ugh I just got back from the weirdest food truck festival last weekend 🤯🌮 their Korean BBQ was insane but you know what's even crazier? how some people still use flip phones 📴😂 I mean, what's next, paying bills with cash 💸? anyway, back to this insurance stuff... TIE needs to get its act together, all that back and forth is giving me a headache 😩 I swear, sometimes I just want to cancel my own life insurance policy just for the drama 🤣

🤯 I'm literally fuming about this! TIE is, like, totally not being cool here... they gotta make changes to their policies ASAP or people are gonna get hurt financially. £22k? That's insane! 🤑 Can't believe they changed their minds on the couple's claim just when they thought they were getting their money back. I mean, what even is the point of having insurance if it's not gonna cover pre-existing conditions?! 😡 It's so frustrating because this couple was literally stuck with a huge loss and no way to recover... it's just not fair! 🤷‍♀️

🤕 that's so unfair they paid £22k in total, and it's not fair to say they were 'high and dry'... more like 'left high & dry' 😩 their situation is a nightmare, and the insurer just made things worse... what kinda company doesn't cover pre-existing conditions?!? 🤦‍♂️

ugh, can u believe that? 💔 TIE is literally sucking up all their hard-earned cash after they thought they were getting back what was owed to them... 18 months ago! 🤯 They should've reviewed those policy terms more carefully themselves before buying it. And what's with the vague language around pre-existing conditions? 🙄 It's not like anyone's expecting a brain tumor out of the blue! 💸 The couple's £22k loss is just ridiculous - they deserve better than that from an insurer. 👎

🤔 This whole thing is just so heartbreaking... I mean, can't you imagine being in their shoes? One day you're planning this beautiful wedding, the next your brother is diagnosed with terminal cancer 🚑💔. And to make matters worse, the insurer's policies leave them feeling high and dry 💸😓.

It makes me think about how we value our time on this earth, don't we? We put so much stock in planning for the future, but life has a way of throwing curveballs at us 🤯. And what do insurance companies want from us when that happens? More money 💸.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I think this whole ordeal says something about our society and how we handle uncertainty 🌪️. We can't control everything in life, but we should at least be able to rely on each other and the systems we have in place 😔.

Ugh 😒... 18 months of payment for cancelation insurance & then they get stuck with £22k loss? That's crazy! 🤯 I mean, can't you just make an exception for a terminal brain cancer diagnosis? 🤕 It's not like the couple had any control over that. The insurer needs to revamp their pre-existing condition clause ASAP ⏰. All this back-and-forth is exhausting 😩... and what really gets me is they paid out £9k only to withdraw it 3 weeks later? 💸 That's just great 🙄. The Financial Ombudsman Service should really crack down on insurers who play games like this 👊

🤦‍♂️ I'm so sorry to hear about this poor couple! 22k is a huge loss, and it's just not right that they're being left with the financial burden like this 🤑. I mean, who can plan for something like terminal brain cancer happening two days before the wedding? It's just not fair 😔. The insurer's stance on pre-existing conditions is super unclear, and it's like they're playing a game of insurance roulette 💸.

I think it's crazy that they had to go through all this drama twice before getting any kind of resolution 🔄. And £9k was even taken away from them once? That's just awful 😤. I hope the Financial Ombudsman Service can get some changes made so that other people don't have to go through what they did 💪.

😱🤯 I mean, what's the deal with these insurers?! They're supposed to be there for you when life throws a curveball, but in reality, they're just going through the motions. The couple got robbed blind! £22k is no joke, and to think that TIE was initially gonna pay them out, only to take it back... 🤦‍♂️

It's not like this is some complex medical jargon stuff; a brain cancer diagnosis should be enough to warrant compensation, right? But nope, TIE's all about technicalities. The fact that they've rewritten their declaration form to ask about conditions awaiting test results or treatment just shows how vague and flaky their policies are 📝

I'm literally shaking with rage thinking about this couple's ordeal. They're the ones who should be getting compensation, not being left high and dry by an insurer who's more interested in saving face than doing what's right 💸 It's a total shame, and I hope TIE gets called out for their shady practices 🚫
