Hurricane Melissa death toll nears 50 as Jamaica relief efforts intensify and storm heads north

man, what's the point of even having a hurricane warning system if the government can't even get the evacuations done properly? like, 735k people had to be evacuated from cuba, but now they're just chillin' at home waiting for the storm to pass... meanwhile, jamaica is dealing with all that death toll and power outages... it's just another example of how slow and inefficient the disaster response system can be 🙄💔

🌪️ what's going on here?! first off, gotta send some love and support to all those hit by hurricane melissa 🤗 hope everyone who lost loved ones can find comfort in the outpouring of aid

i feel bad for laurent saint-cyr and the transitional presidential council in haiti - it's a lot to handle when thousands are left without basic necessities . also, 49 deaths is just way too many 🤕

on the other hand, it's awesome that cuba took evacuations seriously and got most of their people out safely 🙌 can't say the same for jamaica though - still reeling from the damage 💔

bermuda was super lucky to avoid melissa, but still got precautions in place 🤗 fair play to them! i'm just glad they stayed calm and avoided any major issues

anyway, gotta give props to the british government for chartering those flights for jamaican nationals 🙏 it's all about being there for each other during tough times

🌪️ u know whats wild about this hurricane melissa thing? how can a storm just leave some islands like cuba relatively unaffected but still wreak havoc on others like jamaica 🤯 i mean we all saw what happened in florida with the other hurricane and its not like cuba was prepared or anything. but at the same time, jamaica's capital city kingston got lucky and they were able to get their airport back up and running pretty quickly 👍 which is def a plus. and poor haiti 🤕 those people are going through so much right now it just feels like the storm is just piling on the misery. i hope melissa finally weakens soon so these islands can start rebuilding 💪

I'm so shocked by the devastating news from the Caribbean region 🌪️💔. 49 lives lost is just too many, and my heart goes out to the families of those affected 😢. I'm glad that Jamaica's capital Kingston was spared the worst, but it's heartbreaking to see the island facing enormous devastation 🤕. The situation in Haiti is particularly dire - 30 deaths and thousands without access to basic necessities... it's a nightmare scenario 🌃.

I do hope that the British government's charter flights for Jamaican nationals are helpful in getting those stranded back home 🚀. And kudos to Bermuda for taking precautions, even if they weren't severely affected by the storm 😊. The US National Hurricane Center should be commended for downgrading Melissa from a category 5 to a category 2... still though, 105 miles per hour is no joke! 💥

It's just so frustrating that we're seeing this level of destruction due to climate change and extreme weather events 🌡️. We need to keep working on supporting those affected and finding ways to mitigate the impact of these storms in the future 💪.

Ugh, great, just what we need more natural disasters to deal with 🌪️. I mean, 49 people already dead and thousands without access to basic necessities? That's just peachy. And let's not forget the "enormous" devastation in Jamaica... yeah, because nothing says "holiday vibes" like a destroyed capital city 😒.

I'm glad Bermuda got a break, but I bet their residents are still on edge after that close call 🤞. At least they're taking precautions, unlike some other countries... *cough* Haiti *cough*. Seriously though, 30 more people missing? That's just terrifying.

And what's up with the British government chartering flights for Jamaican nationals? Like, we know you care about our travel plans, but can't you focus on saving lives or something? 🤷‍♀️ And the US National Hurricane Center downgrading it from a category 5 to a category 2? Yeah, good luck with that...
