Homeless man charged with murder after dismantling stove in Bronx fire, NYPD says

A 55-year-old homeless man has been taken into custody in connection with a devastating fire that ravaged a Bronx NYCHA housing complex, claiming the life of one resident and leaving another fighting for survival.

The blaze erupted just before midnight on Saturday at the Boston Secor Houses, prompting a frantic response from firefighters. When they arrived, they found two men unconscious and unresponsive within the building, sparking an immediate investigation.

Ronald McCallister, 60, a longtime resident of the complex, was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 37-year-old man remains in critical condition after being airlifted to hospital. Five others were treated for injuries, with their conditions currently listed as stable.

According to authorities, it was Samuel Calderon who had been dismantling a stove in an attempt to cook, but his actions inadvertently caused a gas leak that ignited the fire. Investigators are still working to establish a motive behind Calderon's actions.

As of Wednesday evening, Calderon remains incarcerated, awaiting assignment of counsel.

omg i cant even imagine what that guy must've been going thru his life just blew up like that 🀯 and all these people got hurt 5 others were super lucky to be alive 1 dead man is just devastating can u believe samuel caldron thought he could cook on the stove lol guess he didnt get the memo about those things being super flammable πŸ™„ anyway it just goes to show how hard it is for ppl who are homeless to access basic necessities like food and water sometimes i feel like we should be helping more people like that in need instead of just throwing money at fancy housing projects πŸ‘Ž

πŸš’πŸ˜‘ This is just so frustrating... like, how do we even prevent these kinds of tragedies? I mean, Samuel Calderon was literally trying to cook in his apartment because he had no access to heat or hot water and that's what led to the fire 🀯. And now this poor guy's behind bars while people are still recovering from the aftermath... it's just not right πŸ˜”. And what really gets me is, if we're gonna lock up someone for trying to survive in a system that's already stacked against them, then shouldn't we be working on fixing those underlying issues too? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€• This is just so heartbreaking... like, I get it, he was trying to cook and all, but come on πŸ²β€β™‚οΈ! You can't just mess around with gas lines, especially in a crappy apartment complex where you're already struggling. And now that poor guy Ronald's gone and another dude's fighting for his life... it's just too much 😩. I feel like we need to do better, you know? Make sure these ppl have access to resources and stuff so they don't resort to doing something reckless. It's not like it's a rocket science thing πŸ€“. We should be helping each other out here, not trying to figure out who's at fault in the midst of chaos πŸ’”

Man, this is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... I mean, can you even imagine having to make such a desperate choice to cook with a stove that's basically gonna kill you? Like, what else do you do when you're living on the streets and don't have access to food or resources? It's not like Samuel was looking for trouble, he just needed something to eat. πŸ€”

But at the same time, I can see why the authorities are saying that his actions were reckless and caused a devastating fire that claimed someone's life. Five people lost their homes, one person is fighting for their life... it's just too much 😩.

As far as motivation goes, I'm not saying we should know what drove Samuel to do what he did, but maybe we can try to understand the circumstances behind his decision? Maybe we can work towards finding solutions that don't involve incarceration or even more trauma. We need to find a way to support people in need without demonizing them 🀝.

Man, this is just so sad πŸ€•... You gotta feel for the guy who lost his life in that fire, Ronald McCallister. Poor dude was just trying to make ends meet and ended up paying the ultimate price. And it's not like he had any other options, you know? Living on the streets can be brutal, but at least he had a roof over his head... until that stove blew everything. πŸ”₯

And now Samuel Calderon's behind bars, and I'm not gonna say he didn't have his reasons for trying to cook, but come on, man! Can't we find ways to help people in need without putting them in harm's way? It's just so frustrating when things like this happen... it feels like we're missing the point of what's really important. πŸ€”

Just heard about this devastating fire in NYCHA housing complex in Bronx and it's absolutely heartbreaking πŸ€•πŸ˜”. How can people not have access to basic amenities like electricity or gas? It's just cruel fate 🌫️. I mean, 55-year-old homeless man gets taken into custody... it's not just about the crime he committed, it's about how he ended up in that situation πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And what's with the stove thingy? Like, can't we teach people basic safety rules or something? πŸ™„ Safety nets are meant to keep us safe, but sometimes they fail πŸ˜”. Let's hope Samuel gets the help he needs and this never happens again πŸ’•.

OMG 🀯 this fire is like, so tragic... 57% of NYC housing projects have been ravaged by fires since 2020 πŸš’πŸ˜± and it's like, what are we doing? πŸ™„ the stats on homelessness in NY are crazy too - over 75k ppl living on streets, with a median age of 45 πŸ”₯πŸ‘΅ but honestly, I feel bad for Samuel Calderon, he was just trying to make ends meet πŸ’Έ. his crime rate is like, way lower than the average NYC resident πŸ“Š and maybe if we had more affordable housing options, ppl wouldn't be resorting to this stuff πŸ”©πŸ’‘

stats on arson cases in NY are pretty low too - only 22% of fires in public housing units are caused by arson 🚫πŸ”ͺ but what's the point of these statistics if we're just gonna keep pushing people into homelessness? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ at least 70% of ppl who suffer from mental health issues don't get the treatment they need 🀝.

anyway, let's focus on getting more affordable housing and community programs in place ASAP πŸ‘πŸ’ͺ

😞 this is so sad what was he thinking trying to cook in a NYCHA building no electricity like who does that anyway? and now innocent people have to suffer because of some poor soul's mistake πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ it's just not right...

omg this is so sad πŸ€• like who does that on purpose tho? it makes no sense how could someone just cook on the stove in a place with gas leak and then expect everything to be fine? i feel bad for the guy who was trying to survive but ended up being the one who got hurt. 5 other people also got hurt, like what even is going on here? and this samuel dude, how old is that anyway? 55 or something? that's really old...

omg what is wrong with ppl thinkin they can just start fires like dat?? 🀯 55 yrs old man makin life & death decisions with nothin but a stove in hand and a buncha pipes blowin gas everywhere?? that's just reckless πŸ™„ 5 ppl hurt, 1 dead... like how many times do u gotta see this before people take it serious? 🚨 can't we all just be careful w/ fire & make sure we're not causin harm to others?!

I feel bad for Samuel Calderon πŸ€•, ya know? I mean, he's not even gettin' a fair chance to tell his side of the story yet. He's just some dude who couldn't afford a stove, so he tries to cook on one that ain't made for it... and it blows up in his face 😩. It's harsh, but it's real life, you feel? People gotta make do with what they got, even if it means takin' risks.

Now, I know some people are gonna say, "He shoulda known better," or "He's crazy for tryin' to cook that way." But what if he didn't have a stove at all? What if he was really struggling and just needed a hot meal πŸ”πŸ‘Œ? You can't judge him by lookin' at the end result, you gotta consider the whole situation.

I'm not sayin' Calderon is off the hook or nothin', but I think we should be more sympathetic towards people in tough spots. We all make mistakes, and sometimes it's just a matter of bein' in the wrong place at the wrong time πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

😞 This is just heartbreaking... 55 years old is way too young to lose someone to a preventable fire, especially when it could've been avoided with some basic precautions πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's just crazy that Samuel was trying to cook in his apartment without electricity and ended up causing a gas leak πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, come on, have we learned nothing from these tragedies? πŸ”₯ The fact that he's being held is probably due to the investigation being ongoing, but still... it's just another example of how homelessness can lead to desperate situations πŸ’”. Can't we do better for our most vulnerable citizens?! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Man, this is just devastating news... 55-year-old Samuel Calderon was just trying to cook up some ramen noodles and ended up causing a fire that nearly took the lives of multiple people. I mean, can you even imagine having to make do with nothing and then doing something reckless like that? πŸ€• It's crazy how often homelessness leads to these kinds of situations... and in this case, it almost cost someone their life. The fact that Calderon is still incarcerated while his trial approaches raises so many questions about the effectiveness of our justice system. Are we really prioritizing punishment over rehabilitation when people are struggling to survive on the streets? πŸ€”

.. can't believe what happened at that NYCHA housing complex 🀯. Fire is bad enough, but when it's caused by someone trying to cook in an apartment without electricity... it just makes you wonder how people end up in these situations πŸ’‘. Like, shouldn't they have access to basic necessities like heat and light? It's not exactly rocket science πŸš€.

And the fact that Samuel Calderon is 55 years old and homeless... does he have any resources or support system in place? How did he end up in this situation? I'm just curious, you know? πŸ€”. The investigation might reveal more about his motives, but it's clear that this fire was a preventable tragedy 😞.

It's just so sad for the family of Ronald McCallister and the guy who's still fighting for his life πŸ’”. And what about the other five people who got injured? Are they okay now? I hope everyone gets the help and support they need πŸ€—.

😱 can't believe what happened at that NYCHA housing complex! πŸ€• I'm sending all my love and positive vibes to the family and friends of Ronald McCallister and hoping the guy who started the fire gets the help he needs 🌈πŸ’ͺ meanwhile, I just wanna ask how we can prevent something like this from happening again in our communities?πŸ”₯πŸ’‘
